i think, 2.1. changed many, many, many things. some things i liked to do don't work anymore, like they used to, and i miss them sometimes. i have found other things in 2.1. but i understand, that people who played the game a lot before 2.1. are voicing their opinions - they are rallying for their fun - not the fun of voicing, but the fun they had in the gae and want it back.

In the last week, I've played:
- Elite Dangerous on 2 accounts (One VR, one not)
- Half Life 2: Episode 2
- Grand Theft Auto 4
- Far Cry 4
- The Lab
- Fallout 4
- Fantastic Contraptions
and last weekend I started a new character in Skyrim. None of the games are perfect, but I recognize they are games and not real life. Yet, of all of them, Elite is the go-to game I play every night with almost 4,000 hours of total time over three accounts. I've upgraded my PC several times, bought a HOTAS/HTC Vive/joystick/wireless surround headset, special keyboard, monitor and a gaming mouse to play Elite primarily.
It isn't perfect, by any means. Elite combat is challenging and sometimes I have to Brave Sir Robin from a particularly nasty NPC/NPC's, but I like that. It forces me to do better with each engagement. Sometimes I die (I died a LOT in the Beta), most times I survive. It really does not matter because it's a game. I can make money easily, a LOT easier than when I first began in 1.0 by the way. I can be in a Cobra after two hours play if I reset my position today. It's just a game, but a damned good one.
PS. Many players are unhappy. They are always unhappy and nothing Frontier can do will perk them up. It's just the way they are.

I wanted to add something myself to this (bit weird) thread, after around 1k hours of my gameplay. Something about the trully exceptional magic Elite Dangeous has, that is making me looking forward to another 100k hours of my life spent in Milky Way in 34th century, but..., but..., but Commander Shadragon already expressed it way better than I would myself probably:

But isn't it that way on all game forums? People complaining that the game is horrible? I literally mean all games. All game forums I've joined it's the same thing.
I'm older and maybe my view is skewed. I feel like this new generation are a bunch of complainers. But the reality is people don't really change. When I was a kid there were no forums to complain to. There were no updates or patches. The game was the game. You either played it or sold it. It was what it was.
...and games were hard and we liked them that way.
It's just Elite and DCS for me.
I try to play other games, but as soon as I see an arrow pointing towards my goal... I freak out and load up E : D.

There hasn't been a title in the genre released in the last ten years with the exception of the Evochron series, which is made by one guy with visuals about on the level of X3, and X Rebirth, which speaks for itself.
So no, there really aren't 'other games' of this specific genre. None that have been released in the last decade, anyway. That's kind of the main point there. People want a NEW space flight sim to play. Myself included.
Now, once Star Citizen or No Man's Sky are out (neither of which are right now. Star Citizen is a couple years away at least and No Man's Sky has been delayed potentially 2 months from its release this month), THEN this thread will have a point to it, and I will agree with you that there are, in fact, other games out there.

Still surprised my friend?? Modern youngsters are bunch of Facebook and YouTube addicted crowd. Take a peek at one of them when the McDonald's Wi-Fi is a crap. They cant bear awaiting few seconds longer to refresh their "wall" or whatever they're doing there. Internet also gave them possibility to spill out laud whatever is digesting them inside. Without a respect to other human beeing at the other side of the cable, as they're having so little respect to themselves. Wasting their lives on meaningless affairs all around. Stupid TV shows, wicked celebrities, dozens of trash all aroud. Trash you can create absolutelly nothing out of. They can only copy. Copy this, paste that. Jesus. I'm so affraid about my own offspring...
But as you said yourself. Human's nature isnt changing in general. You can waste your instincts, kill your creativity and become another no-one-special that is being liked by everyone around. Yuck! But there are still many young people around which are the oposite. And I'd love to think the Milky Way A.D. 3302 is a place where at least some of them, having respect to the art as it is, are hanging around. To dive even deeper into their mood, into their feelings, some constructive thoughts while exploring the vastness of our own and the Developer's imagination.
