Hardware & Technical Simpits, setups, rigs & mancaves

To play Elite, I'll satisfy myself with my current platform (with a powerful graphics card to come and a SSD SATA III, of course). I have a 22 inch screen, 1920 * 1080. I will use an XBox 360 controller. I think with that, I can play comfortably. And later when the planetary landings and other updates are released, and if I'm really involved in the game, so I can buy a X52 or X55 ...

I have a £20 desk fro ikea that just first monitor and keyboard on it. Then I have a fully height adjustable ironing board used as a low table tat sits just over my knees in front with my x65f Velcro stuck down.

I then have to sit on the bed :( as I had to give up the study to turn into a nursery for our 3 month old.

It all works though and I can put the ironing board away when not in use so everything is tidy and usable as a guest room.

It stated the same (Pre-order 30.05) when I have ordered Obutto R3volution the 26.03. The next day I have received an e-mail from UPS that they will deliver it in a week. Received it 04.04.

Thanks alot for raising my hopes skyhigh ;)

I have dreams of building something like this or this, but for a Sidewinder cockpit (or other). But it'll have to wait until the following criteria are met:

1) FD release the game (and possibly the 'walking around' expansion) so i can get a good look at a Sidewinder cockpit and design it accurately
2) We move house and i have the space to build and keep it
3) I'm given permission by my girlfriend to put even more money, energy, time and attention into the ED universe :D

Of course, the big dream... the dream of all dreams, is to move to a house with a decent bit of land and build a 1:1 Cobra MkIII out back, with kitted out cockpit, engine room, living quarters, hydraulic cargo bay ramp, deployable hard points etc. A man can dream, can't he :p

Hmmm, Kickstarter anyone? :D

Hey Rog,

It's a Cyberkart sim rig, which is an An Aussie build. You can check their website.

All I did to it was design the aluminium brackets the controls are on, then got them made and powder coated.

It works very well.

Thanks, looks a good set up. :)

I have been building a sim pit for the last year and a bit. By turning a 5.5m x 4.5m loft into a cinema room of sorts.

I started with a Pioneer LX76 receiver which connects to mounted and chased 9.2 speaker set up.

Made a wall mounted ceiling mount for a JVC X35 1080p projector at one end of the room.

Hung a 130" curved screen a couple of feet off the other wall, so as having room for the front 3 speakers to be behind.

Got the xbone and tv tuner with many a full hd movie on a drive. Got Forza5 as you could imagine, steering wheel still to come.. sigh.

Bought a considerably powerful computer with a new graphics card coming next week.

And the rig its self is a Cyberkart made in Australia. it sits close to the ground and as my screen does to its a good thing. Also is of an excellent design that uses a clever way for getting in & out.

I had some aluminum brackets made and powder coated that work like a shifter mount of sorts, except they are on both sides and wrap around slightly so the X-55 HOTAS controllers are not to wide apart.

All of which has only just been completed, and purchased the premium beta not more than two nights ago.

So.. all has been done for playing sims, and especially Elite. Oh hell yeah, space sims are back!

Cool.. post a pic? your screen setup sounds inventive. I'm pretty tempted by the idea of a projector, but not by running metres of chunky cable.. any idea if there is support for 'widi' on any of the current range..

Heya Awconnor,

I linked some blurry pics off my phone a couple of posts up. Check the last one for the cable trunking on the wall. It houses all the speaker & amp cables, also the 10m HDMI cable on one side.

Wifi was an option for me, and i looked into it.. but a cable will always be faster and more reliable. Also, wireless input devices can interfere with the signal(s), so i had to bite the bullet and chase many a meter of cable.

If you do get a projector, check out the JVC X35 or eqivelant. Really really good.

All in ALL i am stoked with my set-up.

Good luck & good game :)

Be careful how far you your dreams can take you:

man oh man. That kinda freaks me out. Seriously? and what do you do in it after? I mean how many trek-parties can you have?

Far out.. i find that disturbing.

My Obutto with triple screen is great. I have the flight sim add one and a warthog just waiting for them to support it. Worth every penny!

Ok, here goes with the mancave sim-pit.
Click for bigger image. It is really worth it...

That some generic HD Samsung monitor, a Logitech G110 gaming keyboard and a Logitech M570 Trackball. There would be an android phone being a ROCCAT control pad next to the Trackball but I was taking the picture with it. Yes that is a pair of Koss Porta-pros.

This is the best bit...

A Mk III comfy chair with custom padding and gravity inhibiting cushioned... erm... cushions... :D

Ok so i setup my old simpit build ive done which has served me a bit when playing falcon4 and more.

I never finished it, in fact its FAR from finished mainly because I just wasnt happy with how it was coming along.
And its made of a design that was meant to "easily fold together and store away" and it does in fact fold together and makes it rather easy to store.
But with all the crap on and around it, it still takes to long and when folded up it takes too much space so i gave up.

Its rather flimsy and ugly, but it holds together and way better then desk/chair =)

But soon Ill have an Obutto Ozone so this is going on a trip to the dump!
Main difference there will be the obutto suitable for general computer work aswell, and not as ugly.

Cockpit setup based on DX Racer King Seat

Hi, All.
So I always wanted to have Volair sim cockpit, but the shipping price to UK is ridiculous (same as the cost of the cockpit).

So I had to make my own basic setup until something similar or Volair comes to EU. Don't like the other ones.

So here is what I made:

Here is my first Elite setup from a year ago. Some ikea chair, x-55 fixed with chunks of wood, buttkicker gamer and dk2.

image.jpg

And this is what it grown into. X-55 stick gone after some CQC, switched to Warthog and pedals. Chair got upgrade with 2DOF movement (arduino + dc motors), DK2 to CV1, buttkicker still kicks.

Only thing left in wishlist is stable telemetry for movement rigs, so simtools plugin wont get busted after every update.
