Thanks for your kind words CMDRs, I really appreciate it. o7
I managed to land on a planet. I'm in my SRV and I've got enough for 4 refuels. Let's hope I find a Barnacle at least...

an explorer without an afm unit? i guess you wont be doing that again.

That's the thing, I actually thought I had one outfitted...I'm dumb 'coz I'm not a beginner, or so I thought. I guess I shouldn't have been away for so long, I forgot the simplest things...

I'll just wait for FD to implement a "repair limpet" I guess.

Just wondering who it was that first found the barnacle in California Nebula and why they went there. What was their train of thought?

Its so hot in the UK right now... Im gonna give my computer a small break atm.

There are 3 main points we need to consider.

1: Unknown Probe (Nobody has seen one of these what they look like or what they sound like. They seem to be extremely rare so if we find one we need to tell canonn.)
2: Barnacles (Might be completly differeant to the UAs and barns. but they make simaler sounds so who knows)
3: Merope (Merope seems to be the centre of all this. Keep an eye on her.)

Have you tried to dismis your ship and recalling it?
IT used to fix the canopy.

physics bugs are fun.

Good luck searching Barnard's loop. I was doing it for a week and found absolutely nothing interesting.
Yeah, first time it has happened to me so I am not even mad. Have been searching Barnard's Loop since the CN barnacle was found. Hopefully something turns up.

Landed on a planet a second ago and the whole planet went black upon arrival, thought it was a graphical glitch until I landed and looked up. This game really is beautiful. Seeing stuff likes this makes the search worth it. :D

imo the searching on planets for these things is pretty hard. I would expect my ship to be able to pick things up if flying at a certain altitude. Why does the buggy have a better scanning equipment?

It doesn't, it has different scanning equipment. Seems logical enough to me - ship scanners are intended to identify spaceships in space, and in the case of discovery scanners to return basic information on the overall composition of planetary sized bodies, not identify the precise composition of individual rocks on a planetary surface, presumaby against the background noise of all the other rocks and the enormous rock upon which they all sit.

that's the detailed surface scanners job. it literally does tell you the composition of the planet. its not too much of a stretch to think that it could also detect organic life when scanning the airless barren rocks Barnacles live on.

Sorry to butt in the conversation here, but I went out to Pleiades to harvest some MA, using this reference: http://canonn.science/2016/05/29/barnacle-status-update-29-may-3302/

The first two barnacles on the "Intact Barnacles with NO defences" section were in fact broken spires. I took screenies, but I'm not home to post them.

I ran out of time to check further down the list,

What am I missing? - I just want barnacles without defenses to harvest up a few for Felicity, and to sell rather than buy them.

Are these barnacle sites changing all the time now or what?

In that video it does look to be pointing to the Merope system to me.. am I blind?

I am standing behind another UA at the moment, and the head looks to be pointing at Merope as far as I can tell. ADR GW-W d1-52 again; also had a UA USS in ADR XK-N b7-2, but wasted it by hitting J too soon.

Barnacles are either tapped out and/or bugged. As a temporary measure you can buy Meta-Alloys at Darnielle's Progress in Maia.

4. The symbol of the Barnacles has yet to be deciphered.
5. Among the MB hints, the Nebulae where barnacles are located have to do with their origin.

To me the goal of this puzzle is to figure out the origin of where these come from.

I gotta say though whoever over at frontier came up with all these deserves to be promoted to game designer or something. They deserve a real raise imo. This is the most interesting thing that I have ever come across in any game in my life.

been out here near the California Nebula looking for UAs. No luck. Been here about 3 hours looking.

They normally pop up much faster near Merope so I am taking an educated guess that there is no bubble to be found at this nebula.

I think that more focus needs to be put on Merope regarding why that system is being hinted at us. Also the symbol on that barnacle has to be a clue.

Okay chaps, with the discovery of new barnacle sites in the California Nebula I think I might be forgiven for wondering why we are not (as far as I am aware) finding UAs in California also. I mean we have long assumed a link right?
So I (among others – I’ll leave it to them to announce their participation, or not as they see fit), am out here in the California Nebula, doing full system scans whilst diving into any Sources that pop up.
It’s slow going. So far I have scanned a mere 12 systems, spending upwards of 20 minutes in each. 20 minutes is the arbitrary minimum period I have chosen as being likely(?) to reveal any SS if they are there, and is a long time to wait when the system only has a single star for scanning.
Moving on, so far: nothing. Degraded emissions sources in about 2/3rds of the systems I have visited so far. Other than that: nada. Anyhoo, Rome apparently not having been built in a day I shall soldier on until either I find something, somebody else finds something, or I run out of California Sector systems to scan (which should keep me busy!). I am not recording my ‘finds’, but I am bookmarking each system in the GalMap, so I will at least be able to review stuff if and when.
Meanwhile, why are there no UAs out here? Should we be concerned at all? Over to you.
Layne.
