Hardware & Technical 970 & the future for Elite Dangerous

I was thinking of upping my resolution.

I'm in the market for a new monitor, and a 4K looks attractive.

However, will a 1070 do 60fps at 4K, or should I be looking at a 1440p instead? 1440p, by the way, would be great too. :)

The GTX 1070 is generally a 1440p card while the GTX 1080 is 4k. MSI's new Twin Frozr 1080 will do 4k quite easily in most games today. But that'll cost you like 800 bucks or more...
For ED though I'd stick with 1070. :)

If a 1070 is overkill for you, and if Elite is the only game you will play for the next 3 years, get the upcoming 480 from AMD if the red team is OK for you.
However, a 970 requires 500w. And so does the 1070. And a 1070 isn't overkill for games that will be released in the coming 3-4 years. :)

Edit. Oh btw your 970 might not be enough for 1080p once we have atmospheric landings and all the new graphical features like trees or water simulations.

The future is what I'm thinking about.

Knowing how updates to this game work, I mean just look at what Horizons did, well, that's part of my reasoning behind a 1070. I want something that can keep at least 1080p way into the future of this game.

And you're right. I don't know what games will come out in three-four years. It makes sense I prepare for them.

Good advice, have some rep'.

1440p is fine. Well, looks like I know what kind of monitor to save up for, and you've really sold me on the 1070 with your earlier post that I repped'.

Might just sell my Xbox One to help fund the monitor & GPU...

Cheers again.

Don't forget, even if you don't manage to get a 1440p monitor. You can still take advantage of the extra power on a 1080p monitor by turning on supersampling :)

Yes .. I brought a GTX 980 in Australia so cost a lot ,NOT that long ago, and now there's a NEW card out.. I would not bother with either of the 10XX , given whatever your playing right now can cope with the card you have ( if not get a simpler cheaper upgrade )

Otherwise you'll be in my boat ,having a GOOD card , that is now 'obsolete' ? , and then looking/thinking at spending close too another $900 +! , for a new card... not going to happen....

I kinda feel Ive been ripped off a bit , given the money Ive already spent , true I could sell the GTX 980 get the 10XX... but I'll just wait , until my CARD dies , or cant do its job, by then, the new features like trees ect will be in ED , and by that time , the 10XX will be the OLD card ,and the 12 XX ( whatever it is ) will be the one too get.

I have a 970 and at 1080p with the game where it is right now it's perfect and gives me a rock solid 60fps on Ultra settings across the board, even for planetrary landings. That said, I get the sense that it's only just there. If I try to increase supersampling for example (to improve anti-aliasing, which supersampling does better than the in-game anti-aliasing techniques) then I do, just sometimes, see a drop below 60fps on planets. Similarly I'd suspect that increasing the resolution (e.g. for 1440p) might also just occasionally introduce sub-60fps moments. Finally, and I don't know if this is something you're considering, I suspect that the 970 will only JUST be good enough for VR. My plan, as and when I can afford a headset, is to try it with the 970 and only upgrade if necessary. In your position, if you can wait maybe a month or so for 1070 prices to stabilise, then I'd probably recommend that, otherwise if you want to get going now and the 970 is a comfortable price for you, then go for it because it will still give you many hundreds of hours worth of very happy ED gaming.

I think this is an excellent point and also worth bearing in mind. I don't think it will happen this year tho.

I won't actually be looking at buying a new card until sometime next year, as I am saving up for a new monitor as well as a card.

It is starting to seem that because of all the saving I will be doing, and the monitor I'm looking at, a 1070 will be the best option.

And do not forget the 8gb of ram on the 1070. It is a window to the future

8GB? I thought it was 6GB.

Well, now it's even more attractive.

Good thing I've got a new PC case on the way, my current one is too small for the 1070. :p

8 GB of GDDR5 standard for the 1070, and 8 GB of GDDR5x for the 1080 ...

Yep, and with a bit of overclocking on the memory of the 1070 you can almost get it upto the 10Gbps of the 1080s fancy gddr5x memory, a youtube reviewer hit 9.4Gbps which is pretty darn good.

On a slightly off topic note, my 1070 arrives tomorrow!!!! I guess the 90 day estimated delivery was just the company covering their backsides in case of supply shortages.

Well guys I've decided.

I'm going to save up for a 1070. :)

That's my final decision. Cheers for all the feedback guys. It's been very helpful.

And for the GDDR5x up to 16 Gbps in the next 2-3 years --- Do not forget to bring your comments on this thread about the 1070 when you have received and tested

:)

Congratulations ! As you buy the 1070 the next year, perhaps there will be a version with the GDDR5x at that time ... But it is only the speculation
