UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 6 - The Canonn

Just popped over to merope 2a, didn't realise the capship jumps in! its only 2.5km from surface of planet seems a bit risky!

My faction picked a helluva week to expand. Frankly, I'm going there after I finish these missions to knock it out of the sky.

I found to my disgust that Merope had not even been prospected. Have been doing that all this week.

i don't completely understand the meaning of the ferragut's presence above the barnacle.

is to defend the barnacle or to prepare to defend US from something that is coming ?

i hope this will not start a tension between Federation and Empire.
Note that Maia is very close there.

the spice must flow ?

I have no idea, but I like the way this is going :)

Galnet reports in the next few days will look something like this: "Farrugut capital ship located in a top secret area of space (Merope) has been taken over by alien technology. They plan to use it for the spearhead of their attack against humanity."

:O

My feeling is there is something special about this Barnie on Merope2A. Why stick a Cap ship there if it was just another standard barnie. Merope has something we have not found yet. Everything points to this.

I think the hole area around that barnacle deserves a look. There might be some interesting wrecks about. FD wanted us to find this one now.

Greetings Commanders,
Rear Admiral Midnight Ninja here again - doing a little night fishing. Found a second Barnacle on the same planet as earlier (Witch Head Sector GW-W C1-4 A 4). This one has 11 destroyed spikes. Coordinates are: -24.8372, -119.8862. Screenshots to follow:

That pretty much proves that the state of barnacles is random. It's still possible that player harvesting causes them to switch to the destroyed state, but I'd say it's unlikely.

Well, one day earlier I might have thought about going there. now I'm a little bit far from Merope. :(

got a nice pic of it from the surface

I think they work as before, except that you can't reset the instance by re-logging.

In addition they now have a global on/off switch, that seem to work on a timer. I don't think player action affects the global state.

Looking at this from a story perspective, suggests that all barnacles are subject to harvesting. As this happens to barnacles that are not discovered by players, it probably means that NPCs (human or alien) are harvesting all of them.

Yep, it's the global state I was talking about. It is still possible to harvest them once in each mode but that's it.

The implication of having global state was that a certain amount of harvesting would switch that state for all players, but finding one already in the state in a new nebula pretty much means the state is random. Perhaps player harvesting increases the chance of a barnacle becoming globally destroyed but more likely we have no impact I suspect.

The thing that gets me though is why do the UA's only point towards Merope? If the theory is correct, then the UA's should point to the closest star of the type it needs. So I wondered if there were some requirement that had to be filled, and seeing as how the UA's also scan our ships maybe it has something to do with that.

Im sure every type of ship has been tried, and every commodity, and a lot of locations. But has someone gone to one of these other stars that are the main source for a nebulas' luminosity with an UA and let it scan them whilst having a meta alloy in the hold? It's the only item I can think of that has an interaction with the UA.

I don't understand your theory as yet, but I have a separate line of thought which your comments above have reminded me. According to the Wikia http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Unknown_Artefact
(I didn't get into the UA audio analysis myself so haven't checked this out, but nobody has denied it occurs) - "the number of purrs (after the howl, after the morse chitter sequence) changes from 5 to 3 purrs with 8 SAP 8 Canisters nearby. More tests required to verify if this is an effect of SAP 8 specifically, or canisters of any kind? Will 12 have more of an effect? etc."

Therefore we know two facts: UAs point to Merope, and UAs are affected by SAP8 containers.

I suspect UAs and barnacles are totally different things, though share similar technology (the blue fireflies, and MAs are a by-product of that technology which is why they can provide a shielding effect against UA/firefly degradation effect)

I suspect the UAs are a sentry to detect SAP8; I have no idea why, but since they always point to Merope then maybe they are reporting the presence of ships with SAP8 to something (yet to be found) in the Merope system. Something that is interested in those crystal shards. I think the Wikia comment came from analysis of SAP8 containers dropped near UA; it would be interesting to recheck the UA Morse signal of a ship carrying SAP8 cargo & see whether/how the ship diagram had changed. Also it might be interesting to take a cargo of SAP8 to Merope, fly around & see if anything is triggered. This SAP8/UA effect to my memory of the last four subthreads doesn't appear to have been fully investigated. Perhaps that's what Kerrash (same reference, timeline of events, 22nd & 27th June discussions) was implying.

Cheers. Added to The Monster.
Given up on it I see ;)

BTW - If anyone is looking for a good planet in Merope to hunt on, Merope 3 C is a "Yttrium+3" planet, so LOTS of stuff for Jumponium.

Massive risk implies massive reward: what do they know that we don't? Meta-alloys are freely available, and have been for a long time, so it can't just be that.

Also - if the Feds are there, then you can damn well bet on Imps and Alliance turning up at other sites.

It'll all be fine until one of them mysteriously gets vapourised, with the victim blaming one of the others factions for it. Cue war. Potentially.

Tensions rise, conflict zones appear, but... but... when more Capships start mysteriously getting blown out the sky, somebody will witness one, and realise that it wasn't another ship - but the innocent-looking barnacle beneath it, emitting some energy beam or weapon or some sort.

Which would then also explain why these life forms weren't protected (till landgrabbers came along with their skimmers and goliaths) - they didn't need to be: they can protect themselves :)

Bar-nuclear weapons they are...

Is there any chance that the Barnacles were there all along? There as in whereever we're finding them and as in not someone placing them there.
