UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 6 - The Canonn

I spent a week searching in the one and only system in the Hind Nebula. About 4 hours per planet. I did not find any barnacles.

The one and only system in the Hind Nebula is T Tauri. It has three rocky planets orbiting two Class III gas giants. The two rocky planets orbiting the closer of the two gas giants don't have those nifty colored patches, while the one further out has some very slight coloration. This isn't a requirement, btw! (See e.g. several of the California barnacles). Physical properties of the planets seem to be smack in the middle of the barnacle zone, except for metal content, which is on the low side.

I spent about an hour on each without finding anything. Not that I would expect to after just an hour.

Pretty much 50% of all planets with confirmed barnacles have volcanism of some kind (all silicon vapour, except for Merope 2A, which is iron magma).
Yup, your post prompted me to confirm it. Didn't have access to my references at the time I posted that particular bit.

check out the planet temperatures, on planets with volcanism, barnacles appear at higher temps than those not having volcanism, around 70K more iirc

sorry, don't have the sheet in front now, mobile

Been doing some USS hunting the last couple of days dropped into loads of Degraded emission sources, the ones with the battle damaged unidentifiable large something sections one gave me this from a data thingy

Unknown ship type?
And then after finding what i needed to upgrade i went to Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn base and on the way down i spotted this.

One of those unidentifiable large somethings larger than a corvette (there's one in the back ground )sorry for poor image quality but wearing rift and that's the best elite does now don't even get the full left eye anymore :(
Interesting thing is that this is number 01 i know peeps had been making a note of the numbers.

Contact point? contact point of the next piece of the structure or of another species?
Don't know if anybody has noted this yet but thought i would post it up.

After reading most of the posts here, it seems that there is absolutly no definitive answer to any question about the Barnacles.

slartybarfast, I'm going to steal all your images for this thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/264118-23810-Prototype-wrecks-WIP

Go for it, just wish the quality was better.

Going to have to take a lil bit more attention to what those "you have picked up this" messages say i think.

and wrecks as well, they all seem to compose a bigger structure.

thank you!!!

Is there anyway of making the images show and not have the silly imger link there?

Sure, right-click and open image in new tab. (Details depend on specific browser.)

Or you can prepend "i." and append ".png" to the link, so imgur.com/oLiSILC becomes i.imgur.com/oLiSILC.png . The actual file ending depends on the uploaded type, so it could differ (typically either .png or .jpg).

8 different battlecrusers that's half of the estimated federal fleet or (tinfoil hat time) could it be one specific battlecruser set up to hide it's IFF if someone could look into if these ships were spotted somewhere else at the same time

I've been reading this thread a lot and it looks to me that there is only one thing sure about the barnacles: Nothing is sure. Like ever

I think the vulcanism is random (the meat in this burger is 100% pure beef*) - but I do think other patterns are starting to emerge.
The Rocky planets are the 'exceptions' that I see (20% of the sample is a large exception though).

The pattern I see is - High Metal Content, low-G (<0.25), temp 300-450K with clusters at 375-380K and 423K

As pointed out before though - only searching these types of planets would be self-confirming bias - the sample of planets is still too small.

*burger is 30% meat

Low g could be required for them to launch whatever is inside them into orbit or out of orbit. They do seem to be enclosing something.... Like a bud to a flower

these metrics are good enough to look for them in other nebulae tho..

I agree but I think narrowing down until proven wrong is still the best way to do it. The sample is small but the ocean is just to big for us to keep scanning wide. Else we'll only find new things randomly !

I have to sit down and take a look at the current barnacle coords list, yesterday I thought of the tilling having to do something with the coordinates and forgot to check

Hi, Cmdr Pretzil captain of the research vesel Aspy McAspface reporting back in after a few months exploring the Formidine Rift. I found nothing, it's very difficult to navigate, follow a line of stars only for them to run out a few hundred LY later, backtrack, follow another line and it does the same. Anyway I have found nothing of interest, not to say there isn't way more to be explored. I'm heading back towards the bubble but will stop off at Heart and Soul on my way through to check for any planets that follow the criteria for Barnacles. It's a kind of needle in a haystack thing, but we've had luck on our side before in this search before. I've followed the forum as much as I can but any pointers on what major features to look out for in a system would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Pretzil

It would be interesting if we could get different commander's patterns together. Maybe we'll see a pattern in the patterns ! :D

This is MadDogMurdock's :

Hello everyone,

I just found that the Barnacle at Witch Head Sector LC-V c2-10 A 4 does not show up on my sensors. It is a double, and usually only one shows up, but this time neither does.

I was just wondering, did anybody else experience this? The others did show, as far as I remember, so I think it might be a bug. Just checking if it's specific to my scanner.

Cheers, CMDR Heisenberg6626
