If the UP is pointing to the nearest barnacle then why did it point to Merope 5c and not Merope 2a?

Lazy programming perhaps? If the UP has been put in as a tool for finding systems with barnacles, it may just have been set to point at the first planet in the DB with a barnacle.

Just think how useful a tool like that would be though. We'd have a way of finding out whether barnacles were encroaching into populated space.

To find a barnacle that has already been found?

The UA are not pointing at Merope because of the barnacles. Besides that, nothing points towards Californa or Witchhead Nebula (,yet?)

It's pointing at the center of 5c. No doubt about that. If yo want it to point to a barnacle, you better drop the UP directly above it.:D

Yeah, what I meant was that it's pointing at 5c for some reason other than the barnacles. That there are barnacles may not be coincidental, but I don't think they're the primary reason for the UP behaviour.

I reckon my theory will fail at the first conclusive test (which means I think you're right), however that test needs to be performed as if it passes it means people are totally wasting their time scouring 5C.

I'd like to think there's something new on 5C and that the UP is the clue to lead us back there. But that's not a certainty based on current tests performed.

Before we throw a massive effort at the whole planet - has the triangle delimited by the 3 discovered barnacles been explored? (Apologies if this was discussed before, the threads are intimidatingly huge :) )

(-69,427;-40,9088): strange noise
(0.662 ; -131.835) and (-47.583 ; -98.392): nothing
Calculated thanks to the triangle.

So i havent seen this mentioned but apologies if it has been covered always hard to keep up when something new happens. In terms of searching 5c has anyone done a high level (orbital cruise even) survey to see if any of the crators, canyons etc look like the barny logo? Ill be heading out there tonight to have a look myself but just incase anyone wanted to try another approach. Just thinking that we havent found an exact match for the logo, weve come close but not there yet, and its pretty normal to identify yourself by landmass or fqmiliar navigational shapes.

I don't know, but I can't help thinking back to The Silent Song Of The Spheres

Edit:

This could be relevant. The 'Harmony of the Spheres' has a connection to the Pleiades, where each of the seven sisters relates to a string of Herme's lyre. The Harmony of the Spheres is said to be source of all creation - the foundation of cosmic order and time.

I'm wary of this line of thinking, but it seems to fit the Comms chatter:

  • "Come with me, brothers and sisters. The artefacts are the key to salvation."
  • "Listen to their song. Feel it. Absorb it. We will transcend this crude flesh and become one with the universe."
  • "There are no aliens! The artefacts were bequeathed to us by a higher power so we could transcend this mundane existence."

I am beginning to wonder if the UA mystery has stronger links to Halsey and her Architects of Creation...?

There is a lot of singing (even Kerash) going on. UAs sing, UPs sing, barnacles sing, even the new wrecks sing (https://soundcloud.com/zdravko-atana...ed-ship-sounds).

A lot of these sounds are quite close to Kepler's 'Harmony of the spheres'. The Harmony of the spheres is well explained in this video: https://youtu.be/1EFZuzgcIzY

There are lots of examples of the harmonies of YouTube and Soundcloud.

I have a feeling that we are missing something in this context.

Some theories about how the UP might have a shell got me thinking about what that could look like and where it would be. What if the UA shell can be 150ly away because their target, a star, is the "anchor" of the system. Since UP's target a planet they might need to be closer, like in orbit close. That reminded me of something from the last patch notes (from a post asking about shipping lanes):

That was buried somewhere in the Patchnotes for V2.1.

Primariliy, they mean Signal Sources are affected by them, as not all types spawn everywhere anymore fully RNG.
Their archetype is now tied to their location and that guides which types primarly spawn at any location in a System.

Unsure if being on a Shipping lane affects anything else. Can't recall reading anything to that tune.

So if signal sources can be adjusted to certain areas we should check specific places in a system. If anyone is heading to 5c maybe do a few laps in orbit before landing, see if any threat 4 anomalies show up.

I think a lot of us were expecting the shell to expand with 2.1. That it didn't fits the theory that perhaps they are intended to mark a perimeter around Merope (i.e. they're a warning or signpost mechanism). It's plausible that they were looking for something around the Pleiades (explains scanning and floaters in nearby systems), found it, and then established the current shell as a border.

OK, i was thinking along the same direction, and my thoughts are somewhere buried in the Thread#6. With the discovery of the UP, a theory could be:
(and please bear with me, as i will take the barnacles out of the equotation for now (and will bring them back in later))

If you "loose" or "missing something", and the last known location would be somewhere in the Pleiades, "you" would probably establish a search perimeter, which maybe were the first discoverys of the UA's.
Maybe the last thing "you" got was a weak signal out of this general region or direction. So "you" have to establish kind of a long automated long distance search. Which is accomplished by the UA, in terms of the shell, being the perimeter. Hence the scanning and "reporting" of ship types. However, this does not lead to the desired results (finding what "you" are looking for), and "you" will bring in a more precise tool - the UP.
UP pinpoints to Merope 5C. So what is next ? Full scale search teams ? (Another) Automation of some kind ?

(bringing back the barnacles now to the whole thing)

What if, that what "you" lost (ship, station, probe of some kind) encountered something, and that encounter had a kind of "bad ending" ? Like that Barnacles did interfere with whatever has been "lost"?
(This would not break the "UA not pointing at merope because of barnacles")
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's just a crazy theory around UA/UP ...

I'm wondering what the convoy thought they might find in Ross 47 with their orbital tests?

I don't think UPs point at barnacles, they point at something else, and whatever it is might not be limited to Merope 5c.

PS. Also had the discussion of whether or not the UPs are pointing at barnacles.

Here was my reply:

Its just pointing to the nearest barnacle proving the people behind the probes are the people who seeded the barnacles.

Wouldn't think so for a moment. The UP arrived in the engineers update. Ergo, beforehand it didn't exist.
Now why on earth would FD point it specifically at 5c? If it was just to point at barnacles then that would be the dumbest idea ever. It has been put in to enhance gameplay, and not to point at something we already know about.
I'd also imagine that the barnacles were also added to Merope 5c as a somewhat related storyline, but added in such quantities there to encourage further exploration on that specific planet in the hope we would find something new. That didn't work, so now we have the UP.
Rest on your laurels if you like, but I'm sure not going to do that!

I was then reminded that the first barnacles in the Merope system is on the first planet. Hopefully this puts to rest the UA,UP barnacle association.

I firmly believe they are two separate stories put in a similar location to make it easier for us to stumble across both.

We have already talked about it in the past, and I liked it at that time.
And I like it now: anyway I have no idea on how we could explore more this line of thinking...
I'm already seeing people singing at the UP, using the mic... :D

Guys...has anyone tried to get a UA to scan you while the UP is in your cargo then see what happens? Does the Morse or signal change? What about trying to place the UA next to UP and leave the 1km scan range to have the UA scan the UP?
And does the corrosion resistant cargo racks change anything?

Ramblings at 1am...

I've made a few observations of the UP. Mainly from the surface video:
https://youtu.be/D2uiUuVWLZU

Important to notice, is that the UP has variation in the time between Honks.
In the video above, Honks come at 2:34, 5:03, 8:08 and 9:42.
Time between Honks are: 2m29s, 3m5s and 1m34s.

The UA does also have variable time between Honks, when it does the ship plot (way less variation). This is because the message has multiple 'lines'.
When Morseing body names, the interval is constant. Message has a single line.

This means that UP honk intervals are either completely random or that there is a repeating set of intervals, like the ship plot message.

If the sequence repeats, it may point to a long message. If it's random, it may suggest a less mechanized than the UA.

The Honk it self, is more complex than the UA Honk. If someone with musical knowledge took a look at the notes, it would be nice.

Colours.

Our colours?

Their colours?

snipped

Mmm- that raises another possibility for the purpose of UAs/UPs- terraforming & Paul-forming devices respectively going by the colours?

The next time somebody gets a UP can they PLEASE test the pointing behaviour whilst on the surface of M5C? Give it a nudge & see if it realigns on a constant bearing, screenshot that then relocate a fair distance & try again, and then again. IF it IS acting as a compass then 3 bearings should give a good cross-fix to drastically reduce the area of uncertainty for SRV search.

And could they also PLEASE get another recording of the video & audio but with ALL game music etc turned off as per the original UA sound recording procedure. Then do NOT move- just record with the debug camera.

Let's get some sound evidence to start analysis. Cmdr Kerrash's recent comment might indicate there is something to be found in the audio, but I had a quick look this morning at someone's link to a cartoon character singing that song & I think it had a line about a blue star-might be another avenue to explore.

edit: nope-my bad hearing, its "blue sky"
