The record also includes the inspirational message Per aspera ad astra in Morse code.

and this...

The record also had the inscription "To the makers of music – all worlds, all times" hand-etched on its surface

So I think they got our package...

It's really fascinating... It would be cool if we could modulate a response and send it on open channels to the UA, UP or Barnacles to see if it triggers a response...

I think FD really want us to check the local news. It's a great vector for them to insert stuff (hints etc.), but NOBODY* checks local news and that pretty much ruins it.

I check it pretty religiously. Rarely see anything other than stock ticker, BGS flavor text and global galnet repeats.

That's part of the problem. When you have big pile of hay (all the systems), it gets harder and harder to sort the pieces of straw when you don't know if there's a needle or even what it looks like.

1GA2M5BG.ng dammit! Think I'm going to lose my lunch... been shipping these things around for ages now, but I'll never get used to when they kick the FSD in the guts.
Anyway, what was I saying... still nothing to report from Merope 5C, these Canonn mooks are crawling all over the joint. If something was here, it'd be found by now.
Our forces at home are ready to move on the High Tech facility, which'll help us to no end. The command hierarchy still have complete trust in me, especially since we put them there. They don't ask, I don't tell.

Scuttlebutt says Jacques and his station were found 22 kylies away in some Nebula. It's not Beagle Point, but it's still pretty far. Observing the activity of the UAs from there will be a good sample, and we can extrapolate results from that. These things will lead us somewhere no doubt, but unfortunately this means I'm going to have to go there personally to verify results. Taila can take point on the HT facility job... we should probably brief her soon, but I don't know if she's ready.

Good news though is that the UAs can disrupt a mobile target. Bad news is it takes a long time to have an effect, and while Jacques babble about "singing" may be a bit incoherent, I've never known crazy to be wrong when it comes to these thing. I rekon we use the HT facility to try and work out how this effect activates. Throw a big damn power generator behind it and we could get some serious edge in future warfare, or at least a pretty penny for it.

That's it for now. FSD warning buzzer's blowing a hole in my eardrum, and I'm getting some software integrity issues reported... gonna have to reboot. Check in another day.

I hope FD do learn from this, though, and somehow get us to check the local news. Maybe even have the headlines pop up or scroll (as a news feed) when docked.

Pop-ups are irritating - that would just anger the playerbase who don't care about news - interesting or not.

Scrolling would just turn into the same white noise that the current list is.

The only way I could see it working any better is if the non-BGS hand-written stories had a different colour in the list, like the Community Goals missions have. But then that may be too obvious...

I disagree. In this case, we were just idiots. There was a "main" galnet post that came as close to explicitly telling us to go read the local news

Wow. I did read this and thought about it but I was in the black then... Well I was wrong ! We sure are slow ! But it doesn't change the fact that local news is not the first thing we think about when entering a station...

Here is an idea ! Local news should be available in your ships once you enter a system, you would get alerts for important messages.

Yeah - even in the 20th century you can find the option to search the local news feed (BBC) or set it up to pick up stories of your interest put them on your front page...

Makes me think it would be worth taking a probe/artefact to the location Voyager was found in the Sol system to see if it has any effect.

In about 40,000 years, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 will each come to within about 1.8 light-years of two separate stars: Voyager 1 will have approached star Gliese 445, located in the constellation Camelopardalis; and Voyager 2 will have approached star Ross 248, located in the constellation of Andromeda.

So we know Jacques had a pretty crazy trip through time recently... I'm going to keep digging into this and see what else comes up...

No. I meant "they".

The local news is always filled with automated messages. I Know some people read it but I can safely guess that most people have just stopped reading them a long time ago. Or else we would have had some clue appearing here last week.

Just throwing out there, there is actually reason for BGS'ers to read them now.

News of expansion, specifically which system your faction has expanded to, now appears, which is crucial for any BGS enthusiasts.

Careful now... there was also a *lot* of stuff on that record that isn't alluded to in the UA/UP/Barnacle mystery. Also the Voyager probes are still drifting along in the Sol system so it looks like the aliens haven't got them yet.

Don't try too hard to make facts fit the theory. It's like using scissors to make jigsaw pieces fit together better - you'll end up with something, but it's not the picture on the box.

Hi people got a tip off, to go scan area LAT -2.26 LONG 145.13 in the IZANAMI system planet 4A.

Got there after a laptop crash.Asp approaching Cmdr.
See crashed Anaconda, hear UA going to investigate in SRV

I hear the UA and laptop crash CMDR Fender in the asp.

Yes in our time they are still in our solar system... According to Jacques we are dealing with something that transcends time. 40000 years and voyager will be at Ross 248. That system exists in the game. Maybe worth checking out? I cant as im on holiday... Believe me mate I'm not trying to make this fit it is doing it all by itself...

All this line of thinking was deeply explored back in the days (thread 2 or 3).

Done. Nothing.

Except that doesn't really change much. BGSers will quickly learn which distributor and what day to look at and the shape of the article and quickly scan for what they're looking for. What we need are headlines.

Added: And local news is KNOWN to have contained a number of Formadine Rift clues that have since been lost to time (since local news is not archived forever). Possibly all sorts of other Easter Eggs as well.

I agree with your main thrust - i.e. we just missed it, and finding it another way is just 'par for the course' as they say. If there's one thing FD will be good at by now it's accepting the fact that players have sidestepped their original, or most likely, plan - take the Merope barnacle doscovery for example - MB himself said it was one of the harder ones to find.

However on this Rift business - to date I don't think there's been any in-game content originated by FD that even confirms the existence of it, let alone offers any clues. Written by Drew, maybe: but that's vastly different.

It's easy to get player-created articles in local news (must be if I did!) and if there's been any mention of it at all outside of the newsletter where Kahuna was recently mentioned I'd Wagar it was not originated by them.

It's another Raxxla. Another celestial teapot.

Anyway... Yes Pat: MAs to Jacques

And UAs out there too - perhaps they will start singing :)

In the times when I have joined the Canonn hordes to run BGS around Varati, the follow-up auto-genned news reports have always been quite satisfactory. They mean far less when you're not 'living' out there, but if you are, they do succeed in adding colour, and are great seeds for your own locally published lore :)

Cargo rack from Palin -> tuned FSD-drive -> UP/UA in the hold and then trying to re-construct the route Jaques took. Or flying directly to Jaques. Maybe there's the area where the UAs will begin to sing and 'they' appear....
