General / Off-Topic But who's actually interested in Space?

Difficult, since you can't post in the next layer up :p!

As for the question, I'm actually a professional astrophysicist, paid by NASA to look for black holes in nearby galaxies using a mixture of telescopes: the Hubble Space Telescope, and X-ray telescopes called Chandra, Swift, and XMM-Newton.

So yeah, I'm quite interested in space :p!

Have Frontier contacted you yet Dr Wookie? There have been a few hints dropped: I hope you can help make us some lovely black holes for E:D

So what happened before the big bang....;)

Bikky - I've been fascinated by space ever since I was a kid and used to read through the astronomy section of the Times Atlas.

I currently have a Skywatcher Explorer 130PM (only a 5-incher), it's quite a good beginner scope but I'd love something bigger. This is one hobby where size really does matter ;)

I'm also going to one of the Stargazing Live events in a couple of weeks, fingers crossed for clear skies :)

Finger crossed. As for something bigger, I've normally used my birdwatching bins, but splashed out. Jessops have an 1100x220 reflector in for just under 80. Looks like a good scope, It better be, its what i've just bought.

Where is Drew Wager when you need him, chair of his own astro-club or something similar ;)

I was hoping to catch Jupiter last month as it was in opposition, but every time I prepped my scope it was overcast :(

10th is supposed to be a good night for Jupiter in UK. IO and Calypso (I think) are due to cause a shadow on each side of it at the same time.

On a separate note, it's quite alarming to see there are a number of new members who've already posted considerably more in a few days than I have in 3 years!

Mind you it does help that we actually have something to talk about now.... :)

Its not the quantity, its the length.... They may have posted loads but we've got the staying power.

I'm very interested in space, obsessed some people might say. :D

I got a telescope a few weeks ago, I've learnt how to use it (new to astronomy), but typically, most nights we get cloud cover, or I'm busy, so I haven't had chance to use it yet.

If you in the UK on the BBC this week Sargazing live starts :D well worth a look,

I also love space and astronomy, not going to bet inbetween Bikky and Dr Wookie :D

I own a 6" Refeactor Telescope and a Omega Speedmaster if that counts towards the tally :)

To be fair, I've been posting waffle on here for years now

Yeah, I'm in the UK, Stargazing live sounds interesting, I like my space TV programs. :)

I've been interested in space pretty much my whole life. My interest in space is what got me interested in the Elite games to begin with. I even create space art, mostly related to real world objects.

Some really good stuff there. Like the one that looked like a plotter/printer in the top right :D

Its more than i've got, As its been cloudy since my first scope arrived, I've still not used it.

It is, Coxy knows some stuff for a 90's pop star.

Does anywhere do telescope rentals or something?

Would love to have one but it wouldn't see any use - Its usually cloudy here in Leeds and of course, the light pollution is a nightmare. At best, you can see 5 or 6 stars in the sky.

Last couple of years I've had a few days in deepest, darkest norfolk and it's been amazing for being seeing thousands of stars with the naked eye, even satellite and ISS flares if you know where and when to look thanks to iPhone apps :)

If I could rent a scope I'd take it down there next time I go so I can actually see some planets!

If you can time it right the Norfolk Astronimical Society do open nights where you can go along and join in.

Not been their myself but only heard good things :D

You should try some local shops and astronomy groups. You'd probably be able to hire a portable one.

Bristol has an Astronomical Society where you can go along and share telescopes: I'm sure Leeds would too

btw the two slit experiement always blows my mind . Reality can't be that bizarre can it?
