ANNOUNCEMENT Commander Names

Wait a moment, this means Snuffler, Yan et al can change their names too...

It would be a shame if they did. ;)

I'm actually quite pleased we'll stop seeing the Alpha Backer #####. Its good to be able to identify players by a real name :)

Just a note to say that the system is now working for me. Presumably the same is true for other Premium Beta backers.

Guys, you really need to stop using those weird domain names...

store.zaonce.net
support.orerve.net

How are we supposed to trust these sites?
How do you plan to counter fraud sites when users are already accustomed to non-associated domain names?

Heck, even a stupid 302 - but from the official E: D site - to these sites would be better than just kicking us directly into foreign hands.

Imagine a leak/hack from a forum mod account and someone adds a mod post which asks users to login into some site and post their credentials there! It's easy to do and the impact on the userbase would be massive.

Stop doing this! *** Christ!

Sure is, although I won't be changing my name

Greetings,

Just two quick questions:

1. If I wished can I keep my Alpha backer number?
2. Is there a minimum length? Can I have Commander A or, 1 for example?

Cheers in advance,

Kro

Go and play Elite, look at some planet names...

Interesting. I'm seeing:

Welcome back, Commander technome

Current Credits: 1501000
Most Recent Flight: 27/05/2014

Yet I'm a premium beta backer and I haven't flown since the 23rd or 24th. How come the site thinks I've flown today?

Also my name-change is only shown as being requested. It hasn't updated at the top of the page. Does that mean that my choice has to be verified or has the system hung?

Hmm,

The Site says that "Non UTF-8 characters" lead to commander names being rejected, but the form itself already rejects multi-byte UTF-8 characters. At least neither "ヘリオス" nor "縞鰺" worked. :/

Oh well, one can't have everything I suppose. ^^

EDIT: With regard to the new forum rules I'd like to point out, that neither of the two is offensive. ヘリオス is Helios written in Katakana and 縞鰺 is a fish. ;)

...

Those domain names are some of the Elite worlds from the original game, so may be more familiar to some people than others. I for one find it amusing, and therefore wouldn't have a problem clicking a link to them.

Equally though, I can understand what you mean, in that <something>.frontier.co.uk could point to any site or service required, but clearly associated with FDEV.

A quick check of a WHOIS server can show who owns it:

It's a bit confusing. Maybe they meant non-ASCII characters, or rather only ASCII chars from 32 (dec) to 126 (dec).

A null, bell or backspace character in my commander name would be weird :)
