Hardware & Technical Nvidia GTX 1060 confirmed

Lol yeah I'd take those "benchmarks" with a grain of salt. :D

Great vid!

Very good video. Thanks for sharing. Makes the 1060 even more attractive now. :p

Looking forward to the reviews.

And the prices will be similar to the RX 480 ---- http://videocardz.com/62049/nvidia-confirms-suggested-prices-for-geforce-gtx-1060 ----- Interesting to see that there will also be a GTX 1060 with 3 GB of RAM and also a GTX 1050

I guess we'll find out in the not too distant future but a 1060 3GB doesn't sound like a great idea to me for gaming. Looking forwards, that could be limiting sooner or later. On the flip side, those who are after compute potential might like it if it is enough of a saving over the 6GB version, as 3GB is generally plenty for that.

1050 sounds like a good idea too. I wonder if this will be low enough power to start replacing the 750Ti (sub 75W category, no 6-pin connector needed) or do we have to wait even longer to get that low? I'm guessing it may be closer or slightly lower in performance compared to the 480, so not quite at 750Ti power levels yet.

Nvidia must have a 1050 to compete with AMDs cheapest Polaris 10 cards. A 4gb 1050 that performs like a 960-970 for $169 perhaps? The 1060 is already a 120w TDP card so I think Nvidia could actually create a sub 75W card, most definitely. :)

As a practical example, there are some GTX 950 cards without the 6-pin connector, implying a 75W TDP max, but a stock 950 is rated as 90W TDP. So, starting at 120W TDP, you'd have to cut harder, or more realistically, look at a future 1050 to provide a possible low power card.

The 1060 can be a good compromise ... with 6gb. It is true that 3gb seems odd

Oh I intend on getting the 6GB model.

My wanting of a 1000 card is mainly for VRAM, and right now the 1060 is the cheapest bet, which is important to me.

Edit: Nvm. This so called official benchmark leaks doesn't make sense... There are so many rumours about the 1060 right now.

Launch day for the 1060!
Linus reviews it quite cautiously saying it beats the RX480 *BUT* with a higher price tag at 249 MSRP which actually is pretty close to the reality where the EVGA 1060 SC comes at a price at $259.
Everyone is tripping on their toes around the 480 and the 1060 - no one wants war in their comments sections it seems.

No issues with the PCIE slot power draw, according to PC Perspective. And a single GTX 1060 beats a single RX480 in Ashes of the Singularity, but the 480 wins in Hitman DX12.

Current prices: cheapest 1060 6GB on Ebuyer = £270; cheapest RX 480 8GB on Ebuyer = £220.

More performance, in some cases, for more price - not unexpected.

I'll be interested in Vulkan results though.

I'm undecided between a AMD RX 480 (partner model, still to come) and NVidia 1060 (again partner model)... [where is it]
I'd like to know which architecture is supported better by Frontier / Elite Dangerous. Does Elite use Vulkan? Does Elite use DX12? Is Elite usually faster on NVidia or AMD cards? Maybe some official from Frontier can enlighten us here :) Still, I like to hear player's opinions.

DX12 is a proprietary Microsoft API whereas Vulkan is a cross-platform API - as the Cobra engine is cross-platform, I would be somewhat surprised if Frontier did not incorporate Vulkan compatibility at some point (not just for E: D of course - Frontier's engine is used for more than one game after all.... ;) ). On the other hand, DX12 compatibility might well help the XB1 version of the game as well as the PC version (for Windows 10 PCs anyway)....

Having read the toms hardware review on the founders edition, and considering the prices seen for the OEM editions. I am going to go for the 1060 rather than the 480. The difference in price will be offset by the lower power consumption, considering I rarely update unless I see a real performance upgrade. This time from a four year old 670 which I cannot see being a less able performer than my eldest son's 960.

Just as a quick question, what influences you most average frame rate or lowest frame rate?
Personally I dislike frame tearing or jerking when the card hits a high workload, therefore low frame rates influence me most.

Vulkan is based on AMDs old Mantle API so the performance gain on AMD cards is pretty obvious.
DX12 on PC is not exactly the same as on XBOne according to Tim Sweeney.
I don't think Frontier is particularly interested in DX12 as ED doesn't seem to benefit anything from having a DX12 alternative. That said, the terrain render might get slightly performance gains, but only a handful of players could actually benefit from it (many didn't even had 64bit systems prior to Horizons....)

RX480 is quite expensive here in Sweden and in other countries as well, and I've heard stocks are running low. This might be the break Nvidia needs right now. Very exciting times!
