From film was the Star Wars opening. Now, remember, it's 1977. That's important, as nothing like that has ever been seen before. No pre-film credits was new. Then, drums, brass, 20th Century Fox ident, silence.

A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy far, far away...

BANG

Music, crawl, starfield, the biggest space ship ever........

...

...Until the one behind it. Which kept going, and going, and going, and going...

(I was a kid, remember that).

As for a simple acting scene, then it's this from a TV show. The actor is Paul Whitehouse. The idea of so much silence in this, when the audience is expecting a big laugh punchline is, for me, perfect.

Even today that scene is VERY impressive. The very definition of timeless.

That was REALLY effective. That enormous ship that kept coming and coming and coming. It showed us right in the opening how powerful the empire was compared to the rebels.

Did Lucas just go bad? Or were all those great scenes not even his idea?

Comedy for a second, did anyone ever watch The Money Pit? The overdone kitchen makes me laugh every time.

For my money, there is no better 10 minutes of film ever created...sound, cinematography, script writing, gravitas, humor, editing...all come together to make a nearly perfect 10 minutes.

Remember when watching this clip that the extras singing so defiantly were actual French refugees on the run from the baddies portrayed in this movie.

Awesome! Somebody threw in Hero with Jet Li, I was gonna use that one too. Good scenes being posted, keep it up!

Tom Hanks is a genius. I'm amazed he hasn't cropped up in more of these posts.

There's a scene from the original movie on which that one was based that I always think about whenever I go to a DIY store and see all the ridiculous names for all the different paint hues.

There's is a reason why some of us chose the Alliance. It's to fight the Empire and this archaic penchant they have for owning people..

I've noticed my choices have all been old, but then how are you gonna know a classic until a bit of time's past? Here's a favourite of mine that's a little more up-to-date, my favourite couple of seconds from the multi-hour eyeball marathon that's "The Lord of the Rings". The look on Gandalf's face as Frodo volunteers to take the ring. All the different emotions in that one second. A look of trepidation, admiration, relief... and guilt.

If you've never seen this movie and have any interest at all in the subject matter, by all means you should see it. Unfortunately, it was released right after Pirates of the Caribbean, so when film-goers saw the trailer they expected more of a sea adventure romp. This is not an action movie. Based on the books of Patrick Obrian, probably some of the greatest historical fiction ever written, and directed by Peter Weir its more of a study of character and life at sea under extreme hardship. If you have a good home theater system, its also the most amazing use of surround sound I've ever heard in my living room. This film sits easily in my top 5 all-time.

I blew this one off for a long time because I thought the trailer showed it being some kind of romantic type movie. Man was I wrong, this is one of my top movies too. Also, long live Ash.

Here's a movie I haven't watched for a long while. I think I might watch it again. I'm not going to say why I've been thinking about it...(A Face in the Crowd)

You tube took ages to load here. I wondered if it was Passport to Pimlico!
