I remember posting something similar WAY back with the discovery of the first UAs. In fact I think I did a poll along the lines of "If there was no mystery to solve, would you want to know?". I seem to remember the result being a 60:40 split in favour of not wanting to know. My guess is that FD are watching and are taking the view that as long as people are enjoying the chase (even if they're on completely the wrong track or if there's nothing further to be uncovered at this stage) then why spoil the fun. We've past the 5000 post mark in this one thread alone so I guess this "mystery" is still keeping a fair number of people engaged.
Of course, in real life science there is nobody to ask "are we on the right track?" nor even any definite affirmation that our discoveries are in fact correct, just a strong sense that the theories fit all currently available evidence and can predict results which, when tested, turn out to work. I guess the irritation here is that we know that FD exist
*1 and could reveal the ultimate truth (or at least steer us towards it) if only they could be persuaded to do so!
*1 or do they?
