NMS vs ED

There's been a lot of speculation and debate about NMS and how it will compare to ED.
Honestly, I can't say yet, one way or the other, though I will say, NMS and ED are different kinds of games.
NMS is currently installing, so I will later give a more fair comparison, once I've had a chance to delve in to NMS.

I have no preconceptions, no particular bias - I do love ED for what ED is - a variously-paced life-in-political-space flight-centric simulation.
NMS promises something different, more of a survival/exploration sandbox.

Both are similar in that they are both space-based, but that's really where the similarities end.

The truth shall be revealed soon....

Too bad that in NMS you will never see or interact with another player. It is an empty universe and is like limiting yourself to Solo in Elite for no reason.

Yeah that's one of the reasons the game isn't for me along with the flight model. Gave it a shot for the 2 hour limit but meh.

Before NMS released I thought that it looked about as much like ED as Skyrim does. Now that I've had a chance to play it, I feel even more strongly that that's the case. Nothing wrong with it, the comparison is just silly.

Elite currently lacks some features to be compared with NMS, but honestly, Elite is more mature in every aspect. And the people complaining about repetetive gameplay in Elite, can now do that in NMS... I for myself will stay here.

Yeah...
Whatever. As long as you don't get griefed by this guy.

I think the main problem for some Elite players is that ED acts all big and important, while delivering repetitive gameplay with no real point. NMS is a fun, cartoon-styled universe that doesn't appear to take itself to seriously. Both games have the same basic core loop, but Elite tends to act like it has more variance, when it really doesn't.

It was the space flight that just felt somehow wrong to me. The ground based exploration and crafting didn't grab me in the way I hoped as I love that aspect of Far Cry Primal for example, but here it just feels too, well, gamey I suppose.

This is like trying to compare ARMA and Call of Duty. It's like comparing 2001 and Star Wars. It's like comparing American Italian food to Italian Italian food. They're all good at what they do, but they're not doing the same thing.

Yeah but in ED, I often feel like I'm in space. This sensation is particularly strong when landing on a planet. In NMS, landing on a planet involves pressing E to land. I was hoping for slightly more involved flight mechanics than that really.

My point exactly - while ED has a few more mechanics, NMS is much less serious and focuses more on the core gameplay than "oh crap where the heck do I land" syndrome (Corvette pilots know the pain).

Agree with the previous poster/s that said they're not really same genre. Probably in the same general area but not really same sort of game, so unfair to compare.

To be honest though, I am just amazed that anybody has the time to play both games!
