Ship engine sound...

Ugh...at the higher speeds, like full impulse, there is this sound like a vacuum cleaner that has something stuck in it. It is a high pitched whine. If that one noise could be filtered or toned down a wee bit, my ears would thank you so much. :)

Of which ship do you speak?

I like the shound of the sidewinder a lot. I got a eagle now and the sound is a little bit weird :D i think it will take some time to getting used to it.

For the sake of all humanity NO. I love the sweet high pitched purring of my engine.

Dude, not even...seriously. It is an obnoxious noise and it is annoying, and not needed. Real jets and aircraft don't sound this bad when running full throttle. I am asking for it to be toned down or give us the option of masking it.

Some games allow for certain sounds to be controlled. Surely this one be programmed to give us the option.

I also very much like that sound and we are very far off from a jet or an aircraft :), this is spaaaaaace!

I suppose you are talking about the Sidewinder? That one was done on purpose most likely to convey the sense that the small engines are really at their limit there. Don't you worry though every ship has their own set of engine sounds, the Cobra for example sounds much smoother and the Eagle like it is shifting between ever more powerful gears.:)

Have you heard a real jet at full throttle?

Yes, plenty, and they don't stay whining once they are moving forward and at full throttle.

I dont think its appropiate to ask sth. like that. It looks like you are a minority trying to force a mjority into liking something your way.

I like the sound. I dont want it changed. 1-1 = 0 /thread

If they don't change it, then there should be an option to turn it down or off. And I am not asking this just for myself, because I am sure there are plenty of others that probably think the same way(like my SO). Giving players options is always a big + in a game when it comes to settings. The more - the better.

I agree with the OP. There's a very high-frequency noise that seems to have been added recently as far as I can tell (or maybe it's my new headphones), and it's quite fatiguing to listen to. It's made worse because it loops quite obviously, so keeps drawing itself to one's attention.

Counterpoint:

Love all the sound design as is at present so far - tho I miss the heavy whumm of the station force field that seemed to be in the alpha videos - and yes, even the sidewinder fx. It's all very unique, so very different from the standard ubiquitous space game fx. I especially love the super cruise speed build.

It's only one specific part of the engine noise that the complaints are about. It probably depends on hearing and headphones as to how irritating it is. I've got good high-frequency hearing (I can hear bats quite well) and a good set of headphones and as such the squeal is really quite annoying! I'm going to ticket it...

Overall the sound design is obviously stunning.

Have you tried Quies earplugs ?

:p

Sound options

Khavi's made a good point in that there could be an option to turn down the engine noises as with most games.
I'd like the option with more focus on voice messages , warnings etc. Also you may like to listen to podcasts of the galaxy, latest prices? ED radio, whatever in the final versions.
For those that like the engine noise's they can turn it up full. for those that dont turn it down.

Since Alpha 1 there have been people asking that the engine noise actually relate to the power that the engines are needing to produce rather than the absolute speed. After all in space once you have attained a specific velocity you don't have to push any more.

There was a developer who agreed with this but I think it's been forgotten.

Personally I think it would be more dramatic to have the engine pitch changing as you pilot the ship, especially during combat. The engines straining as you turn and running down again as you fly straight again. At the moment it's a constant whine irrespective as to how hard the ship is having to work.

Also, when drifting along at speed with flight assist off and the throttle at zero (i.e. engines off) it's silly to have the engine sound as if it's going hell for leather.
