Well it's official I'm the worst elite player

I gave it my best shot I like elite dangerous from what I've played but I am just so terrible at this game not flying or combat just actually doing anything substantial like delivering a package hell even just landing on a station is a harrowing experience I haven't managed to get a better ship then a sidewinder after several playthroughs and trying over and over again anyways elite it's been fun but clearly I am just to much of a noob to play this game

Don't worry, we all had our starting hours and getting to grips with the game. Keep trying! I play with a mouse and keyboard, having gotten to Dangerous and double Elite. If I can do it, you can too. :)

OP, if it makes you feel any better I had to self-destruct within thirty minutes of starting the game for the first time, hadn't got a clue how to dock and got shot by the first new station I found, pancaked into the landing platform the first time I tried to actually land and basically very nearly gave up on several occasions. I used to wonder how the hell anybody was able to get anything other than a Sidey because no matter what I did, I died and barely made any money. The game had a learning curve that an M35 Mako couldn't stick to (yes I know that's the wrong franchise!).

That was when the game first came out. I've now just hit Deadly, I've got a fleet of ships and I can't stop playing this game.

Also, if you're struggling may I suggest you head over to Hell Razor's Mentoring thread? I'm sure he or another volunteer would be happy to give you a boost and help you get started.

Play through the tutorials and slow it down. Do courier missions, you're learning to fly and building a foundation so just take it easy.

OP, you should have seen me trying to land for the first time. It was a long time ago, but I really hope it was in a heavily populated station and I really hope people were watching.

You should have seen the first time I ran out of fuel... and air. Took a smuggling mission to a pirate base about 15k Ls from the star. Ran out of gas in my Sidewinder half-way there and just sat there wondering what was going to happen when the timer hit zero.

I'm pretty sure I got ganked right out of the station my first time. Again, it was a long time ago, but if memory serves me correctly, there was a lot more text than what comes with standard NPC interactions.

I went out to mine, in a Low Reserves metal rich ring, with one mining laser, and the smallest possible refinery. No prospector, no collectors. Took me forever to mine that first ton of Osmium (because, hey, the mission boards all wanted Osmium, so it must be worth something!).

I look back on all of that fondly. Trust me, the learning and tripping and getting back up is half the fun of this game. :)

You are not the worst. You are an Elite pilot with a long road ahead.

Now get back in that cockpit and earn some money!

Also try joining a group, some specialise in noobs. There's a chap called Helrazor too who can often help with mentoring.

And when you get bored of being a good guy look me up.

Try not to be so negative about this.

It took me, 3 sidewinders, just to get out of the station. Not bad considering I played the 84 game, until I was Elite and still use the same keyboard layout to play. The 3rd one was learning not to deploy hard points, inside the station.

It then took me 19 sidewinders, before I brought my 1st ship with my own credits. The thing with this game is it is the little things that cause the most hassle. It also has a massive learning curve, with so much to master, without any instruction or advise from frontier; as they like to keep us guessing about everything.

1st trick about landing and take offs. Keep the landing gear down, as you cannot boost and it slows things down generally.

These forums are a very good source of advice, but use google to find anything here, as the forums search, is useless.

Utter Hogwash CMDR!
We were all crap once.
You shall progress and become great.
Keep at it and avail yourself of the numerous great people on this forum who will take you under their wing.

Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm!

Lol it's okay, I remember when I was in a Sidewinder I took on an assassination missions to kill a Conda, it didn't end well for me @_@

I can see it in my mind already...

You interdicted that conda and typed in the comms "All that tasty cargo, it's a miracle you've come this far"... :D

Some practical suggestions that improved my own experience with Elite (and yes my initial attempts were similar to yours and others').

  • Look at the key bindings for the game, under the options->controls and try to familiarise yourself with them. You need to remember that the flying model is six degrees of freedom and you can fly with the ship's computer helping (flight assist on) or in the advanced mode with flight assist off. My suggestion is that if you are using the mouse and keyboard you keep the flight assist on.
  • Fire up the training scenario where you learn how to target and shoot canisters. Ignore the canisters and take a stroll around the asteroids. Familiarise yourself with how the ship handles and with the controls of your choice. Experiment by changing the default bindings if they don't suit you. For example I have the thrusters' control and the throttle on the left side of the keyboard and the yaw, pitch, roll on the right side of the keyboard. I don't use the mouse for controlling roll and pitch (I've unbinded those) and I only use it for head-look and control of the system map and the galaxy map.
  • Once you are happy with the controls start moving around the asteroids in a more advanced manner. For example look at an asteroid and use only your thrusters (with throttle zero) to circle around it (left or right thrusters and yaw left or right). Experiment with up and down thrusters and pitch too, and keep doing that until you are familiar with the flight model.
  • Next step is to use the training scenario to learn how to land. In my first attempt I went over the time allotted and the station destroyed my ship. I tried again and again until I had a sense of what it involves to land a ship on anything. There is no penalty in failing the training mission and you can retry as many times as you like. I dare say that landing on stations without a docking computer is one of my favourite things.
  • Now you can start and take one mission from the mission board. A delivery perhaps? Courier mission? Take something easy and familiarise yourself with the system map, the galaxy map, and the mission board.
There are more training scenarios and there are many people in the forums who are more than willing to help new players. Youtube has a plethora of videos made exclussively for new players by experienced players. Don't be afraid to ask questions; all of us had to learn the hard way because it's a deep and complex game and you've only scratched the surface. Once you master the basics you'll be able to advance rapidly and find which parts of the game are the best for you and you have most fun with.

Nowadays, i am a good combat pilot, i can manage ship energy, weapon groups, heat and counter messures without even thinking. I dont overshoot targets, i land a ship with ease, even if its highly damaged and i can touch down on high g worlds... But man, it took me not days or weeks, but months to know my stuff.

Dont give up. Make mistakes and learn. Failure is valuable data.
One tip: dont haste it. Play the tutorials over and over again. The first few months, i always started my Elite sessions with a Sidewinder faceoff (now Cobra faceoff), just to get used to combat and ship handling under fire. Stay calm and learn. Once you see yourself advancing, Elite will reward you with incredible immersive gameplay. Go for it!

Fly safe CMDR :)

I'd be embarrassed to see my first footage flying into a station with a sidewinder. And I mean flying into the station, not through the slot, pretty much smeared myself on every inch of that toaster rack and front face. I spent so long frustrating myself steam refused to give me a refund because I'd played too long. So I messed with controls and whatnot (had a friend with the game that was infuriatingly having no issues docking or taking off or fighting) and eventually it all just kind of clicked for me, now I can slide a Cutter, Annie or Corvette through without blinking (though I wish those darn 'prox' lights would give it a rest).

I'd say to stick with it, continue to do those things that you are successful at to encourage yourself and become more and more comfortable with the ship and then when you feel in a good enough mood to conquer the slot (or whatever is defeating you) give it a try, watch the NPCs do it and try to mimic them (they are very careful, adorably so).

Oh and make sure you have FAon!

Chin up! This game is difficult at the beginning. There is a very steep learning curve. That's why your first Sidewinder is free. And free to replace when you get blown up. That's so you can just go out and make as many mistakes as you want, with little consequence.

We were all terrible when we started. I'm 65 and retired and my reflexes are terrible. But I've still managed to be successful in this game. You can too. But not if you give up.

Good luck!
