OP, you should have seen me trying to land for the first time. It was a long time ago, but I really hope it was in a heavily populated station and I really hope people were watching.
You should have seen the first time I ran out of fuel... and air. Took a smuggling mission to a pirate base about 15k Ls from the star. Ran out of gas in my Sidewinder half-way there and just sat there wondering what was going to happen when the timer hit zero.
I'm pretty sure I got ganked right out of the station my first time. Again, it was a long time ago, but if memory serves me correctly, there was a lot more text than what comes with standard NPC interactions.
I went out to mine, in a Low Reserves metal rich ring, with one mining laser, and the smallest possible refinery. No prospector, no collectors. Took me forever to mine that first ton of Osmium (because, hey, the mission boards all wanted Osmium, so it must be worth something!).
I look back on all of that fondly. Trust me, the learning and tripping and getting back up is half the fun of this game.
