A horrible realization: Goodbye my dear Cobra!

New'ish career. Going with owning only one ship at a time. And no combat - at least for as long as I can.

When I started this adventure of only having one ship at a time I naturally presumed that I would be going the Sidewinder to Cobra MkIII to AspE to Python route. All great multi-purpose ships capable of doing it all. Perfect for a single ship career!

Currently in the Cobra Mk III, one of my favorite ships from way back in '85 however...

I have been to Corolis working on Mk III builds for mining, missions, smuggling, and trading and (remember the one ship career) have found that, once you remove combat from the ship creation equation, the ole Mk III is just okay for the above jobs but another fav - the T6 - appears to be quite a bit more capable in non-combat ED gaming.

I really, really like the T6 but...c'mon...it's the Cobra! Everyone's "go to" ship!
Anyone have any thoughts about things I may be missing before I hit the Shipyard next boot-up?

The T6 isn't fast enough to evade unwanted combat. You may be going the pacifist route but the NPCs that will interdict you are not.

Other than that I got nothing against the T6 except that the Cobra III looks better, has a better looking cockpit and is much more agile - it's the Millenium Falcon of ED :D

The cobra is Ok but if you're making a living from trading you'll probably want something with a bigger hold. In my opinion the AspX is a better upgrade option than the T6 but then it does cost 6 times more!

New career = Not a lot of money.
Current Cobra is about 1/3 of the way to A-rating, where needed, and I have about a million in the bank.

And you gentlemen ain't helping! Hehe...

I can do it (make money) in the Cobra but the T6 would be faster/better. And so far, never having fired a shot, I have only been interdicted once.
Oh so conflicted. Like having too many beautiful girlfriends...

Buy the T-6 OP. It's perfectly capable of surviving as long as you don't try to fight it. The only drawback is you'll only be able to equip class-I mining lasers. Other than that, it's a hell of a little multi-tasker, and fun to fly.

Never died once in my T-6.

I have only been interdicted once.

I think that is the key there
Type 6 boots to 350
Cobra boosts to 400

Better chance of escape inn the cobra.

Plus you will be going from a Upgrade Cobra to Stock Type 6

Stick with the Cobra for now, consider the Type 6 once you have enough to outfit her a little better for escape.

OK, Vasious makes a good point here. I wouldn't buy the T-6 untill you have the funds to harden it.

You clearly haven't discovered the ASP. I was sceptical but the ASP is really good :D

The Cobra MKIII is a great all around ship, and one of my favorite ships to fly. The hang-up is you really need to outfit it for one job at a time.

Go for the Type 6. It's a great ship in its own right. And the view from the cockpit is most excellent!

However with a million or so in the bank that's the purchase cost covered now after selling the upgraded modules the op will be able to make a swift long distance hauler if the T-6 (goes for d rated instead of the A's currently!) I say a DO IT OP!

Whew. I feel better. Thank you gentlemen.
To answer some:
Yes looked at the CMkIV but the "6" has about 50% more cargo capacity and is faster.
Yes the AspE is my next ship, hands down, when the funds allow it. Or were you talking about the unloved step-child; the Asp Scout?
Yes the T6 makes a great little miner (used one quite a bit in my last career) and the lack of medium hardpoints is a downer but not fatal.
Yes the T6 can be made fast and that is usually my first upgrades - 406 m/s max vs 455 for the Mk III. I have plenty of stick time in the time in the 6 and was only killed once way back when I was a new guy. I haven't, in the past, had too much difficulty in escaping from NPC's at that speed. Plus it has the one-man cockpit and, as noted above, the cockpit view is awesome.

Thanks all for the input. Think I'll go for it!

Orca. Nothing it can't run away from, especially with engineered drives.

edit - oops, probably out of your price range. But still something to aim for.

Doesn't the Cobra have better armor &/or shields than the T-6? Besides being faster?

I'm curious because I have an explorer Cobra MKIII atm, but am trying out different ships to be a mission runner. I tried the DBE, but didn't like it for this role so much. I bought a Viper MKIV because I thought it would make a better mission runner, including some BH/assassination missions, but don't really know how to equip it. So may people seem to love the T-6 on the way to an AspE!

I may simply go back to my Cobra and re-outfit it for mission running, losing some jump distance but being able to handle a little combat on top of trading/ferrying supplies.

Orca eh?
i thought that may be a (non-combat) good thought as a stepping stone to the AspE.

Not sure what I was thinking but holy moly is it expensive. Bless the author of the Corolis site.

The Cobra is a great mission ship...one of the best... But for a non-combat role that is about it's only an advantage over the "6" that I can see.
And even then at the higher level missions (better paying) you may need more cargo room the Cobra has.

Yes if you are trading the T6 is a great in between ship. Once you have enough go for the Asp X. You can do Rare trading at huge distances and make a bunch more money that the T6. After that keep on plodding until you get enough to build a Python or Anaconda fitted for trading.

If you want a job that the cobra Mk.3 is perfect for and ideally involves no combat, look at smuggling. If you get interdicted, by the time the rozzers have their scanners up you're out of range.

The Viper Mk.4 really shines with some engineer upgrades. Thanks to Ms. Farseer and a couple of her friends I have a ship with a 30LY jump range, agility on a par with a Viper Mk.3 (FA off is your friend) and a 412m/s boost speed. It also has over 600 armor and just under 300MJ shields, with 24t of cargo space and a fuel scoop. It's a great little mission runner. And Felicity is the only engineer I have maxed out - I still need to become friends with the good professor.

prior to 2.1, with the new AI.
type-6 is a great trader.

and prior to 2.1, if you pack light it's a great long range explorer ship too in comparison to Adders/cobra.

It has so many internaly you can rack all everything you need and still have room left over for a cargo rack.
Even the Diamond back's nore asp-scout can boast that.

Farseer & the dweller can remedy the Engines and power distributer. Dirty drive upgrade and engine recharge focused power distributer - max out your boost speed and maintain it continually.
