Deciding on next ship: Python or FDL?

I'm in an iCourier at the moment, though I also own an A-rated Vulture and a T6 which I bought for the current CG. I've got about 40 million, should have a lot more when the CG ends. I've been thinking for a while that I'd like a Python next, as I'd like to be able to do both bounty hunting and any trading CGs using the same ship (hate feeling defenseless in this T6; will probably sell it if I get a Python). But I've heard that it's had a nerf within the last few patches, so I don't want to go with it if I'll end up getting murdered because of lack of maneuverability. So I've been thinking about doing an FDL instead, and just keeping the T6 for if I ever want to do more trading. Thoughts? I've tried googling the question, but pretty much all the threads I could find are pre-2.1; so I don't know how the Python does now if it's been nerfed, plus the new AI.

do you have horizons and plan on engineering your python? if yes, it can get a true do-it-all-ship, and a great general combat ship. if not, it is a good armed trader, but no good bounty hunting/combat ship in my opinion.

40 mio is a third what you need for a python outfitted to perform well, though.

I'm under no illusions about how much money I need; I know it'll take another few weeks of CGs probably to get me enough to get a decent start on equipping a Python.

I do have Horizons; haven't messed much with Engineers though. I tried a bit in my Viper, but with such a small cargo hold I was getting irritated with the fact that I had to make so many trips because I couldn't hold many of the required commodities at once. Obviously that wouldn't be an issue in a Python though, so I might be willing to give it a shot.

Choose the same way you chose between a Viper vs a Cobra.

If you plan on running missions or trading in addition to combat, the Python is the clear choice. If all you want to do is combat, the FdL is the clear choice.

The Python is a *far* better all-round, multi role ship. The FDL is an absolute death machine in combat, but weak in other areas. It boils down to your play style really, and what you enjoy. The Python can do a little bit of everything pretty well, while the FDL excels at combat but little else.

Ideally you want both, for the roles they shine in. I'd suggest the Python first, and be prepared to spend well over Cr100mil to kit her out properly. Once you have a nice Python that you can do CGs, some smuggling, some long distance trades with, that kind of thing, build up the cash to buy an FDL that you can have *fun* with.

Multi role =Python

Combat Murder Machine=FdL

@missmartian, perhaps an FdL appreciation society is in order?

engineers can make up for two or three of a pythons "weaknesses" in combat - its low speed (compared to FAS, FDL, clipper etc.), and its manouverability with drive tuning, and its exposed modules and medium base shields by shield modifications. it is no powerstarved ship - and can fit class 6 scb, best with high restant shielding ...

that said - as a pure combat build i would still prefer a FDL.

FDL with a dirty drive is the best ship going.

I've tried and sold the python umpteen times, it's just not as much fun. Except for armed mining.

I fly a 93mil trader python with 286t of cargo. I have 5 small mine launchers. I even have a big red button that says "five mines?". It takes about 20-30 to destroy a deadly FTL. I just keep them in my 6 and drop at 1.1km, keeping my throttle in the low blue. Sometimes I boost after I drop. The higher the rank, the more slippery they are but it's the same thing. I still run from condas and vettes but I'm curious if it's just a matter of 40-50 mines. Haven't had any trouble since I put the mines on. Not a scratch.

I would sell your T6 and buy/upgrade an asp to make the rest of the cash needed. I sold my Python to fund my FDL but I sure miss it.

With the new instant ship teleportation coming I would hold off until it drops, then see how that plays out.

Some believe the multi-role ship will be rendered useless, even with Engineer mods. We shall see.

A Python is a NECESSITY in the current environment.

Quite simply the best fastest way to take advantage of what Engineers have to offer.

If you can't move up yet, stick with a well equipped Asp.

If I was starting over, I'd want to work up to Cobra, Asp, Python as fast as possible. Max out each one as you gain access to Engineers focusing on FSD, shields, and thrusters first. Play defense until you run and survive any situation.

Once you have a G5 modded Python, the universe is all yours for the taking.

As long as the current environment is operative - the Python is The single most important ship to have.

Mine has 1500 mj shields, boosts over 410, jumps over 20ly, and can haul 120 tons.

And it can land at an outpost

Without any outfitting changes.

Nothing else in the game can do as many things as well. Best in game right now.

Python is a great ship, it can do cargo, mining, combat everything. It's a very versatile ship.

I love mine its great in Res sites bounty hunting (I have a x2 C3 beam, x1 C3 multicannon and 2 medium multicannons, those shred anything just watch for heat) I've even took mine into combat zone, netted a 12 mil reward mission to kill 72 ships. i got killed once and netted a nice reward. So the Python can do it all just learn how to use it. :)
