UAs, Barnacles and other mysteries Thread 8 - The Canonn

So, from an outside perspective, here's a quick summary:
1. FDev starts giving hints in the form of coded messages the day before the hunt...on a Saturday, when people aren't expecting it, leaving a lot of people out of the process
2. CMDRs follow the hints to the primary system and hang out at 10 am. Maybe 5 CMDRs actually get to see the "NPC CMDR" that gives the new clues, and he is subsequently killed by a known KOS-player.
3. FDev scrambles to add a CG that gives a new coded message. The solution leads to a system and time that hasn't been mentioned before
4. FDev confirms that parts of "The Hunt" is Open only. That means 1000s of CMDRs who for one reason or another do not play in Open, have missed out on the opportunity of getting the first clue.
5. The time arrives at the system given in the CG-message, but nothing happens. Reports start trickling in about others finding the "NPC CMDR" in another system
6. The"NPC CMDR" gives a couple of clues, which includes non-existant systems in ED (pulsars), ambiguous information (station name that appears several places), and non-accomplishable tasks (give tobacco where he isn't, and can't be sold because it's illegal and has no Black Market)
7. Now everyone is waiting for 21:00 so they can maybe be lucky enough to be in the same instance as an "NPC CMDR" who most likely will give more non-helpful hints.

That sum it up?

Like I said earlier, I was following the events here in the thread to see if I should join at nine. The answer is a resounding; "Why on earth would I bother?"

Sorry FDev. This whole "Hunt" has been a letdown from the first encoded message sent out yesterday. You have some work to do :(

I think you've nailed it, Arguendo.
I'm tempted to putting it on the FP...

Pulsars = Neutron stars in this case I suppose. We don't have different types of neutron stars in-game, we have just a common definition of neutron star. So we should seek just a binary neutron star system regardless of pulsar or not in real life.

There's nothing poorly managed about this at all.

We already knew the actual alien stuff was coming in 2.2 and this one is just the teaser they didn't explicitly show at gamescom.

They are giving out clues with riddles to solve and that's all we gotta do.

The people who were actually waiting for interactable aliens, and at the start of the hunt to boot are purely delusional. It's like always, people jumping on whatever opportunity they find to crap on FD.

So what the contacts appear only in open? I never play in open but I jumped in my cheap but cool imp-eagle with enhanced thrusters and had fun, winging with various commanders. Never saw a thing, no contacts. Wasn't in the right instance. Big deal. I had fun talking to people and exchanging the excitement (and the disappointment) of every asp that turned out to be another player looking for clues.

It's going very interesting for me personally. We get to see a lot of players getting out of their comfort zone and interact with each other. Over at the Canonn Discord, it's an all time high and people are having fun. Frustrated, yes but also having a laugh more often than not.

This is the best a game company can do without shoving a heavily scripted and crafted story down everyone's throat. They devised a treasure hunt and they even gave an actual timetable so people can have a daily life but contribute when they can. They already know all the clues will be shared and discussed online so there's no problem in that regard either. It's the players as always who chose to create their own fantasy in their head with whatever epic scenario they could think of and are mad at FD for not delivering the bells and whistles.

Thank you.

from a tin foil perspective this seems a bit, stretched have they (fdev) missed something out? or has the npcs indeed been intercepted and killed making it impossible for us to complete this event, perhaps in the future make them un targetable or infinite hp...theres always one idiot who wants to spoil the gameplay for others..

The thing is, it wasn't a NPC, it was a CMDR, you could send PMs and it was a hollow blip on the radar.

Killing him shouldn't do anything, he could just respawn, come back to the system and keep giving out clues for other players.

This is a perfect example of how to not bring anything to the discussion or scientific progress. Along with the other people whining about this or that, it's a game, get over yourselves and have fun with what we have (which is a product of a lot of peoples hard work)

Anyways...

Has anyone brought tobacco to Mcmullen Vision yet to confirm if trading to the station triggers anything? I'll haul a few tons out there if noone has yet.

THATS THE POINT.

YOU CANT DO ANYTHING WITH TOBACCO AT MCMULLEN.

Guys can't we open a seperate thread to discuss how poorly managed this "event" is?
This highly respectable Cannon thread ist barely readable anymore because of all that meta discussion. :(

From my position (which is somewhere behind the rift) it was quite fun to follow the events throughout the day for some nice variety ;)

If you don't like it, just wait and see what will be found in the end.
And feel free to discuss the "how" in a seperate thread (this is a serious suggestion, it is certainly valid to discuss this!)

Yes it is terrible game design. Don't change stuff you announced beforehand and then confuse people with new mini-puzzles and vague hints.

Many people won't read up on the new stuff if it's not clearly presented to every player in-game.

This isn't like one of those crap film tie-in games where you're forced to do the minecart-on-rails level, it's more like reading American Psycho, where you can choose to skip the chapter on Genesis.

Awesome analogy. As long as you don't skip the Huey Lewis and the News one.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to return some videotapes. :D

Well it is another mystery so probably belongs here :p

You know how FD always mess up with spelling, grammar and transcribing?

What if it's meant to be "One of my friends always lies in the system with a single M-Class Star".
