So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

it did happen 2 times when I jumped in a new system, onetime i could make a picture, 22 august

ChcW0PM.jpg
Well, I didn't change any hardware or drivers. Besides, as far as i can tell it doesn't look for me like hardware or driver error.

Was it during charging the hyperdrive? If this phenomena was observed by more commanders, maybe we will be able to find more about it.
Until now, i was unable to reproduce it. It has happened in DRYAEA AIRG UB-S B45-0. It's class M star with 9 other bodies (2 rocky-ice and 7 ice worlds, all with atmosphere), nothing there which could emit such kind of light.

I know it might sound dumb to some of you but what the B0 and VZ means?

B0 VZ is spectral type. Our Sun is G2V. B is a Main Sequence star, like G. The numbers are how close they are to the class (B0 being exactly B while B2 would be 2/10s away from B) and V being luminosity class (how bright) - the V is actually a Roman Numeral so it is 5. I'm not actually sure what the Z means, some kind of luminosity modifier I assume.

Thanks! So it happened in Pleiades, at least the one time you took that picture. And it wasn't during jump sequence like in my fall. Since Pleiades, the Formidine Rift and some other regions seems to be connected, i don't believe it is hardware problem.
I left the Rift and made a journey to the galactic rim, until the stars were to scarce to keep the direction. Now i'm heading back. I didn't encounter those lights anymore, not once. But i will take extra time in the Formidine Rift now on my way back.
Do you remember in which region of the galaxy did you encounter those lights where you didn't took a picture?

A very hot star (B), belongs to the hottest stars in class B (0), and is a less luminous main sequence star (Vz).

More info here and here.

Thank you!

These are shader glitches. Nothing more.

I want what I'm seeing to be a bug and nothing more, so I can stop trying to figure it out - especially since I can't find any pattern or reason for what these anomalies could possibly mean other than there is something mucking with my navigation system in an odd way. So far I know that "unexplored" can appear randomly/overlap/in blue or green (my HUD colors) and the less than symbol randomly rotates through unexplored and "discovered" stars/planets but also that the blue less than symbol is always where it should be while the green less than symbol is quite often off. The less than symbol can also be present without having a selected star/planet so that means its randomly appearing on its own. Additionally the symbol doesn't rotate through it is random and doesn't go through all entries, usually hitting the same few depending on system. It happens before discovery scanner when they are unexplored and after when they have names.

I posted in the support forums to get a response but the only person to respond saying it is a bug also responded to another issue I had while completely ignoring the version of Windows I was on plus that the driver version he recommended I use, because I was "out of date" (by one release), was the exact same version number of the drivers I listed plus my DXDIAG showed and someone even followed up with a post correcting him and today he still made a comment about it so I can't exactly trust that poster for it being a bug.

Here's what I mean by the green less than symbol being off:

Alright, so let's assume that it isn't a bug, and you've got a localized phenomenon affecting your Nav Panel - we need to find the source, so here's what I'd do.

Pick a starting system and hit systems along the x-axis of the galactic grid, until you stop seeing the effect.
Go back to your start point and hit systems in the other direction, still on the x-axis - that should give you a midpoint.
Now go to the midpoint and fly up the y-axis, until the effect goes away, then back down the y-axis.
Hit the midpoint of both x- and y-axes and do the same with the z-axis.
Then do the diagonals.
If you bookmark the last system you see the effect in, in each direction, you'll end up with a sphere/cube of effect.
Hit the middle system(s) and scan everything and hit every USS you see.

Obviously, if anyone else is in the vicinity, they should head over to see if they see the effect too.

I really wish we could place different colored bookmarks. I've put so many in out here for navigation that now I'm at a point where the only thing I have are bookmarks that say "no" or just have the systems name.. either way they don't matter on the visual gal map so it all looks the same.

If you're using EDDiscovery, you could probably get a similar effect, maybe.

I'll check it out, I'll have to retrace steps I bet but I have a few systems written down and some others in screenshots so perhaps it won't be too bad. Only problem is where I'm at things are dicey to jump to.

I'm still betting you are right and this is a game bug not intended to be a Rift hint.

It's a pity Drew is busy writing novels - he could answer the question pretty quickly ;)

Alright, so not as soon as I had thought but here goes with my thoughts on what the Rift could be. I've recently finished the book (E:Reclamation) and have taken an interest in the search for the Rift.

1) Formidine - When we look at the word as a whole, Google Translate lists it as meaning 'fear' in Latin.
However, if we break the word up (which may not be proper, and despite Drew using Formido as the root word) we get Formid, which means awe, in GT in Latin and ine which means pertaining to.
So while the Rift could represent exclusively a 'rift of fear'. It could also represent a 'rift of awe'. Which awe can relate to many emotions or feelings, fear included.

2) Old Lady - We all know about the interaction with the old lady in the hospital. So let's review a bit. According to the old lady you follow the RR line, to the edge of the galactic arm and keep going. Stars thin out and there aren't any for dozens of light years. So it has to be far enough away from the center of the galaxy for that to be experienced.

3) Discoverability - It's been in since gamma release and has still yet to be found. It's also possible for a single player to find it but can also be achieved 'en mass'. It's also not a 'poi' and unless it was changed with the 'wings' release, shouldn't be one of the 'dark objects' that Braben says are in game.

4) Seven Veils - One veil for each of the seven sins? The ship name could represent the two (Hassan/Salome) wanting to forget some of the happenings that they have endured, but were ultimately caused in some manners by themselves. Their new ship can now allow them to do that. Kahina herself has the most of the 'sins' to shed since she was born into a family with power and ultimately achieved power.

5) Rank Locked - I'll spoiler this section since there may be some who haven't read the book and wish to. If you haven't and plan to read the books this part isn't really crucial to my 'theory' just an observation
Other than Drew stating it's not locked to a rank we can assume this because it is entirely unlikely that Hassan or Salome achieved elite status in such a short amount of time. Also considering, with the exception of Luko's ship, each one they were on ends up being destroyed. Not the sign of an elite pilot.

6) Worse than Thargoids?
What could possibly worse than Thargoids? They're not in game yet. Yet the Rift has been in game since gamma. So what could be worse? Sure maybe there are other 'sentient' beings that haven't been found in game. That's unlikely though.
Humans and ourselves. That is what I presume would be worse than Thargoids. Humans are the biggest threat to humans aside from Thargoids (and anything else). And each individual has their own fears and we can create our own fears out of virtually anything.

7) Other clues - 'Heart and Soul, core of the problem, many layers, taking part in a story, unbelievable, fabricated, memory wiped, don't tell no one, figures it all out'
The old lady's ship was likely named after a loved one. Whether it was before or after her loss is not known. We do know that she didn't take to exploring until after this loss. Whatever the old lady experienced out there was said to be fabricated and no one believed her. So if no one believed her, why wipe her memory? Let her tell her tales. Perhaps when she experienced her 's**t', it drove her to a mental breaking point and she lost some of her sanity. In the video at the end of the book she also says to 'watch your six'. Following the RR line is taking you away from civilization (regardless of direction) and what's back in the bubble? Most of our perceived problems. Her nod to watch your six could have meant don't look back. In her case, since she was already in disarray during her travels, she may have had a moment where everything she had gone through up to that point, she relived.
Regarding more of the hints from Drew.
We know it's not a poi, there are many layers, there's a 'core' problem, figures it ALL out.
The human body could be the 'meaning' behind these. The core of the old lady's problem was back at the bubble and if I'm not mistaken R/R is near the 'core' of the bubble? Which is likely around where the lady may have been from. Humans have many layers ourselves through emotions.

8) In conclusion what do I think the Formidine Rift is?
I think it could be a point in the game (far enough from civilization) that the human body has to face a personal dilemma to proceed further with their journey.
The reason it's called the Formidine Rift (whether it's exclusively fear or not) is because it is this point in the galaxy that can create many emotions and thoughts can race through the mind. What's to fear in the depths of space, especially at this one point in the galaxy? Everything is to fear. What am I doing? Why am I doing this? What if I can't make it across? What if I run out of fuel? Will I see my loved ones again? What if I run into the...unknown? Who am I doing this for? What if I can't make it back? What if I go too far? I would think these would all be questions anyone would come up with before crossing a deep void in space, hell, even going towards the galaxy center, where you can always easily turn around without having to worry about not finding your next system jump.

I think the Formidine Rift is a point in the galaxy and the human mind that causes people to reflect on the past, or just be in absolute amazement of their accomplishments of making it to a certain point in the galaxy. We all know Beagle Point is the farthest reach from Sol, but there must be something significant about the location the old lady went to that can capture something similar. Whether it's fear or not. So maybe there isn't one specific point in game that we are looking for, but rather our own creation of the Formidine Rift.
That might not be what the Rift actually is and probably isn't what players want to hear but the plausibility is there. Especially with the things that were dropped as clues.
Plus the addition of players might not recognize it even if they 'see' it.
So perhaps this is close and maybe the Rift we are looking for here is the old lady's. Perhaps we can create our own Formidine Rift though.

The only people who know are Drew and FD. Who mayhaps could give some feedback on the thought process here. [where is it]

Anywho thanks for your time and I'm copying this so I don't have to go through the same crap I went through last night.

wink.png

I'm sure he's seen my posts and chortling as I repeatedly smash my head into a wall destroying my frontal lobe until all I can do is drool, even more so than usual, on my keyboard as my feeble mind attempts add 1 plus 1. He seems to be a bit sadistic based on the 'clues' he drops. :)

Now here's another odd thing. These stars have actual jump lines, and they aren't out of reach but I can't get a route to them despite getting a route to a star system further away almost in the same vicinity. I'm very acquainted with not getting a route plotted to stars that have no jump lines, even though they are within jump range, but this is the first time I can remember actually seeing lines to star systems from other star systems I can actually jump to. This really is the first time I've noticed it, all stars I've tried to plot to that I couldn't didn't have jump lines in the route I could have taken although some I could still jump to, I just had to manually target. But you can clearly see the star system below the ones that have route failed is almost right below them and further in terms of range but they all have jump lines. I have to call it a night for now, but I'll check it out more tomorrow. The first star system that "route failed" had quite a bit of Nav Panel activity in the "location" panel but, again, could mean nothing.

The only thing the rift is making me reflect on is the goose chase when I could have been outfitting a cutter back in the bubble from the last CG :(

/not really though
//I'd save it for a beluga

Come back to the Bubble, there are still plenty of wild goose chases here - I've been running into dead ends for 6 months and never got further than 5k from Sol :D
