Advice on what to check out first... and g'day!

Hello everyone,

I've recently (3 days ago) ordered a HTC Vive, and one of the reasons I got it was for this game. I can't wait! I've only put about nine hours into ED as it, and that was some time ago, but I'm a fan of the whole franchise and old enough to remember ha-ha. My intention has always been to revisit ED when I get a HMD

Since ordering, I've been googling around for some more specific ED|VR info - hacks/tips/etc to get the best out of the Vive until native support gets fixed and general tweaks - Yep, I'm aware the Rift plays this game better, right now, it's not an issue for me. So of course I found my way to this forum and, while I was at work, I managed to spend hours looking through threads here. Some good info and helpful people :)

Technical info aside, does anyone have some things they suggest I see or do, in game, to really showcase the ED|VR experience? Something that really blows your hair back?

Cheers,
pax

Everything will blow your mind in VR. Simply landing on a station will that for you.
What GPU do you have?
Depending on processing power the most important thing as vive owner is setting up super sampling.

1. get chaperone switcher tool.
2. Open it and change the supersampling value. This can be anywhere between 1.5 and 2.0 depending on your GPU.
3. Change ingame settings to either VR low or VR high (depending on GPU)
4. Change ingame supersampling to 0.65 (lowest value - SteamVR SS is better wich is why we do this)
5. Change your HUD to green using this: http://arkku.com/elite/hud_editor/#theme_-1_0.6_0.07_1_-0.19_-0.21_0.26_1_1
6. Enjoy a much sharper Elite dangerous experience with easily readable text.
7. - Optional - Buy Vrcover 6mm aftermarket Vive gasket for more FOV and a bigger sweetspot

Hi Thoemse,
I am looking forward to just looking around the cockpit... I know even that will give me goosebumps.

I've got a GTX1080, which was something I was waiting to get, before the Vive. Excellent breakdown of the info found here, mate, thanks. I've seen some realistic representations of how the text can look in elite, in VR, and I'm fine with the result and having to tune it. I'll start with those settings you listed. Regarding the gasket, I've also found a bunch of people on the Steam/Vive discussion threads that are buying a $2 soft sleep-aid mask with a soft padding gel ring/eye surround, and cutting the fabric out of the center. I'm going to give that a try as a quick fix if my odd shaped head is a problem. Is there currently a preferred after market Vive gasket around these parts?

Prior to VR, so in 2D:
  1. Find an earthlike in an ASP E, and fly as close as you can until you are forced out of SC
  2. position yourself so the planet is below you and the star is to the side

Make sure VR is fully configured by setting VR mode to HMD headset in ED's menu
Play some cheesy VR demo so until you have sufficiently aclimatised to VR

Play game
  1. look around
  2. check out the scale
  3. Fly to nearest outpost and fly around it to see how big they really are
  4. Fly to planet with a spaceport and land outside
  5. Deploy SRV and slowly explore the port whilst noticing the size of the structure and the Golioths

FA OFF?
  1. Do some serious canyon runs!

Sleepmask works, i find the gasket more comfortable though. It can be wiped off if sweaty too.
I have a Titan X Pascal. I can run at SS 2.0 with VR High and additional setting adjusted to high and occlusion on medium.
I even managed to run SS 2.0 + ingame SS at 1.0 but at that point you invest a lot of processing power for practically no gain.

1080 GTX should be good for a great experience!

Edit: While above poster has good suggestions i suggest the following:
If you are new to VR i would do space runs only for starters. Some people are prone to VR sickness more than others and they report that the SRV makes them feel sick. Personally i can drive and jump around with the SRV for as long i want without any ill effects. I do however play ED in VR for a year by now.

I do remember that rolling the ship while doing a landing maneuver made my stomach jump at the beginning. No sickness - more like a rollercoaster feeling (pretty cool actually). By now i don't feel a thing even when corckscrewing like a madman.
Just don't push it.

Thanks guys. I've found some of the best info on this forum regarding tweaking the Vive. I'm confident I'll be able to dial it in based on everything here in these threads, and I've noticed I have a comparable system to some of you who have managed to squeeze enough out of it to see a huge gain.

I want to get the most out of my entry into VR and when it's all set up well, i want to do/see the things that have impressed people the most. All the WOW stuff :)

The understanding of the scale of the game is something I haven't quite got my head around. I play with 3x27" monitors now at 5760x1080, so I'm more amount immersion than resolution, but I still can't quite grasp how BIG everything will look. I read, on here, another CMDR talking about walking around the cockpit of the Cobra, saying it was bigger than the roomspace he was using... Flying around a space station and feeling tiny and insecure - I can't wait for that feeling!

I've also just added the Horizon DLC, in preperation, so I can look around more.

I'd recommend landing on a planet, get in the SRV, and drive around while looking at your ship. Then park really close to your ship, step out of the SRV, and look around some more. The sense of scale is amazing.

Good idea! My PC is in a room with enough space to move around a bit, but for the initial setup I'm going to strip the dining room and make it into a holodeck, just so I have enough room to really take a few paces around and under the ship without too much constraint and, of course, to ustilize a good space for some [properly] supported Vive games and demos

Take a trip to Betelgeuse 1 :)

Whatever you do, I'd recommend NOT to go driving on planets with the SRV during your first days with VR. Save that for a later time.
I'm pretty experienced with VR and due to this I've become quite robust regarding VR sickness by now. I can play most games where a lot of people complain about sickness. But driving the SRV is one of the few things that make me feel a little sick after a while especially on a planet with a bumpy surface.

Flying low over the terrain and through canyons should be far less problematic.

Very important thing to do (works best with small cockpits)

When you are parked in a station, don't just enjoy the 3D by the fact that the cockpit is closer and separates into two when you look at the buildings beyond.

MOVE YOUR HEAD LEFT AND RIGHT. Wiggle around the cockpit and watch how the cockpit moves but the background buildings move less (and the stars/planets don't move at all)

Adds SO much to the feeling of "presence"

Hey thanks man, yeah I'm going to have to take it easy, I'll heed the warnings from here

Oh, man, absolutely. I expect to look like someone on acid, just looking at stuff, looking at stuff while moving different ways.

Just enjoy it.

Nothing else compares to the 1st time you experience VR

Absolutely agree - moving about in your seat really helps. Drkaii only just found out he can climb out of his vat :D

I find driving the SRV on planet to be the best 'mind-blowing' experience ED has to offer. The fast-paced combat in CQC/Arena mode is pretty good too.

The small ships all have great feel, but the larger 2+ seater ships (Cobra, Python and larger ships with an actual bridge) are fantastic.

(also sounds like there's another Aussie in the room) lol (Perth here)

Im so damn excited. Tell me, given that I have to tweak this game a little to get it looking as best i can, do you think I should try something else first? Something that runs ideally on a Vive? So I can plug in, and step directly into the best experience.

I have a Cobra III at the moment, I've just plugged my X52 in and loaded the game to set up all my controls... I've also added Horizons and used the SRV for the first time. At the base, on the moon, there was some other larger ship docked... driving past them I decided I'll stay around there until I get the HMD, I think they're going to look unreal... It was impressive just on the screen!

Perth here, as well :)

While the game doesn't specifically make use of roomscale features, you can still use it to walk around in your cockpit. On the larger ships that gives you an appreciation of how huge some of these bridges are.

One of my favourite things to do is to go into the debug camera when landed, and then just stand on the landing pad, listening to all the creepy noises and watching the ships fly overhead.

Slowly floating past a capital ship in FAOFF, licking the hull as close as you can get can be an experience.

Find a system with only a few objects (ideally just the primary star), jump there, and then head out a LONG way (50Kls). Now stop, and look around (best if you use the DEBUG camera). Once you get bored, look at your watch, and wonder where the time went!

VR is a game changer, and Elite: Dangerous makes full use of it. You might want a decent HOTAS, and a touch typing tutorial program.
