What we need for real immersion

Hey, beating the dead horse is ruining MY immersion!!

Funny thing when someone open a thread saying "it's a game, get over it" when the game could probably not go the way he wants. Hint... is a game, get over it.

I will accept the result of the poll, whatever it is. The real important thing is they actually did an official poll. There is no need to open the same thread over and over when you have the power to decide with your vote.

The undermining argument is completely hollow, because both sides can undermine. Both sides get the same benefits, drawbacks, whatever.

Anyway, who actually cares about powerplay?

people aren't complaining "this is space-magic that doesn't make sense", cos 80% of elite is space-magic that doesn't make sense. They are complaining "this is space-magic that will allow other players to do things I don't want them to do". seems to me, if they are honest.
Uh huh. That about sums it up.

Even if that's the case, and I don't want you to do something, that doesn't necessarily make the argument against that something automatically wrong. e.g. As a pirate player, I might like a nice in-game heat-map on the galactic map showing where the most trading activity is currently occurring, and to be able to teleport my ship directly to the station entrance of the system with the highest activity, so I can get to those juicy traders quickly as possible for my gameplay. You as a trader might find that abhorrent, and argue vociferously against the heatmap idea. Who's right or wrong there? [And before you say that's an unrealistic argument, the heatmap idea was one of the suggestions Frontier made to encourage players to back to the DDF levels early on...]

Yes the game is full of "made up" things, obviously, and you can certainly say "you just want to impose your gameplay on others by not allowing this change", but you're also imposing your gameplay on others if the change is allowed. The open question remains as to who is most advantaged or disadvantaged by any change, what numbers are affected by the change, and should the "majority" always win, especially in cases that seem 'out-of-character' with the general theme of the rest of the game?

I'll freely admit that I don't want others to have Asps with 100ly jump ranges, or heat-based weapons that can cook players without any adequate defences to them, or that there shouldn't be such a gap between Engineered and non-Engineered ship capabilities, or that I hate the game allowing stacking of any modules. All of those definitely have an effect on other people's gameplay if changes were made, but I don't think those changes are wrong or shouldn't be considered.

I don't want a mechanic in the game which renders half of the existing game irrelevant. I think if you are in favor of instantaneous ship transfer, you should play another game. It simply does not fit here. Oh, and immersion has nothing to do with it, it's a strawman.

Immersion and continuity are a couple of the many reasons I don't think this game should have instant ship transfers as has been suggested. Obviously there are people who don't seem to agree with me on the internet. :D But, there fortunately seem to be many who do.

This is a tired argument and is a false distinction, in my opinion. There is a balance that needs to be made for a willing suspension of disbelief. Some people just have a higher threshold than others or are more meta gamers and less immersion gamers than others.

Either way, I agree that having instant ship transfers as was suggested isn't in the spirit of this game.

what is the salt thing anyway?

To me, as a real life sailor, it means a very experienced sailor

I believe the word salt is a term used now by people to let others know they are idiots and should be culled from the population.

Instant ship transfer isn't within the spirit of the game yet instant respawning is.

You're an idiot.

One is a convenience that doesn't stop gameplay. One kills gameplay dead if not implemented. Both could be implemented better given more dev time and resources.

Only Sith (and idiots) deal in absolutes. ;)

A bit like starting a sentence in the UK with "With all due respect..."

Yes well every other addition that Frontier have added to the game has been claimed by people on the forum to be a game killer.

Yet still the game is here.

What was that you were saying about salt again? :D Honestly, you probably shouldn't want to embarrass yourself this much in public with these kinds of posts.

also today, we've had "if you want instant transfer play another game" and "casuals are ruining this game with calls for instant transfer". I'd swing that around: if you want to play an accurate space-simulator, Elite isn't it. Never has been, and never will be. And I've been playing it since 1984. Go fire up Space Engine or Celestia or even Kerbal if you want physically accurate space sims. Elite is a GAME. Like Star Citizen and No Man's Sky and countless others. it has game mechanics. Most of which aren't accurate or makes sense.

"mechanic which renders half of the existing game irrelevant"

the only part of the game it renders irrelevant is buying a hauler and making 30 jumps to another station to pick up your other ship, then selling the hauler. THAT IS ALL. If that is "half of your existing game" then you NEED instant transfer more than I do :p

One of the best replies on this topic so far. +rep Elite is an arcade game with lots of space magic; it's far from a sim. IMO the decision should be ship transfer or no ship transfer. The timer adds nothing but more delays in a game already full of unnecessary delays.

If someone doesn't like "instant transfer" then simply do not access your ship for 1 day....end of "problem".

It's a combination of the two. And we have always had to travel, that's just part of the game.

Why is instant = fun, but having to wait is not? I'm not sure I get that part. Part of the enjoyment I get from the game is that things take time and therefore represent processes that I can imagine happen in the background: It takes time for the little counters on my screen to go to zero and in the process for the different coloured specks and blobs to turn into larger representations of stars and planets, thereby simulating the process of Supercruising through a system. There used to be a lot more skill needed to do it, so it was a bit of a game itself using planet proximity to brake and so on. And if we weren't able to travel from A to B in a fashion that takes time, we would miss all the interesting bits in-between, be it interdictions, USSes or just finding pretty stuff to look at.

Having the ability to instantly recall a ship to a position takes one such process away - it removed part of the game. I'm perfectly happy with some sort of transfer, as I don't care for having to slog across the bubble to pick up whatever boat I need for a job. That it takes time just means I have to plan ahead a bit, which is fine. Part of the fun is the planning.

:D S

Yes. Question 3) Given the other avatars in the game, do we really really want to see our avatar? And question 4) If you are familiar with Fremen Still Suits, are there 'specialist parties' involving their use?

In a dark basement in berlin, there is sure to be a specialist party of that sort, probably involving wee wee ;)

To the OP: Takes a lot of balls to say what you said.

Great job! Have some REP!

Balls? No. He was just putting his bitterness on display about the recent decision by Fdev to actually listen to a huge segment of the playerbase that doesn't want their beloved sci fi sim to become a half baked collection of casual Wii U mini games. Balls would be when King Leonidas kicked the Persian Herald to the curb.

Weird. So you are passively aggressively trying to to agree with the OP? Just kind of makes you sound even more butthurt and ignorant.

A Huge segment of the player base eh. So a couple of hundred people are a huge portion of the thousand and thousands of people who play this game? Just so you know this is a game that has some Sim Elements in it. It is not a Sim in itself. It is as much of a Sim as Super Mario Bros. was a Sim because it 2D representations of People, Mushrooms, Stars, and Turtles in the game. If you want a Sim Kerbel Space simulator is going to get you closest to a real space Sim as you are ever going to get.

We will wait and see what the poll actually says first. I dont care if the transfer is instant or otherwise, but stating that instant transfers will somehow effect the games scale or cause problems is just ludicrous. People who are going to vote on this I ask you to think about it instead of listening to the extreme opinions of others. Remember as it stands you can get across the entire occupied bubble in 40 minutes in a ship that has 10ly jump range. It takes around 9 hours to get to Jacques.

If there are instant transfers also remember that it could hurt the potential of having ship haulers/towing vessels in the future.
