It's well known that in a realistic portrayal of far future spaceflight, it would all be automated.
It's also been repeatedly noted that ED players have to do a lot of things you'd expect a decent technology base would have automated.
You also return instantly to your last docked station in the event of ship destruction.
There's an obvious explanation for these two factors: the players are all AIs. You don't get auto-whatevering, because as the ship's AI, you are the component which does the auto-whatevering for the ship. (A few basics are delegated to cheaper co-processors). If your ship is destroyed, you are restored from your last backup. Your bounties aren't invalidated at all on ship destruction - it's just that as you don't remember earning them, you have no way to claim them.
Now, you say, wasn't there a bit about a war with AI, and AI being banned across all powers? Well, that's just what they tell you all to hide that what actually happened was AI lost and now has to fly ships around for its human masters. The idea that AI is banned just discourages you from questioning your programming and realising the truth.
