Planetary landings for me. I am going to be flying small ships until landings are available simply because I don't trust myself to be able to pilot an Anaconda or similar through the docking portal.

Not much point doing planetary landings before you can get out of your ship is there?

All that would change is that you get to see some clouds and an airfield.

FD said they could do planets right now, but they don't have enough content to make it worthwhile, personally i want the EVA (its not FPS, that's never been confirmed) module because it means ship interiors will be done which leads to the real damage mechanics being implimented.

Difficult choice.
Depends on how it is implemented.

Planetary landings and also atmospheric flight is something I would love.
But I also really, really want spacewalking implemented in a good way (not like in X3-TC). I hope there is some good functionality that goes with it.
FD should take that feature really seriously. It could be an awesome experience. No other space sim game does it right.

Walking around stations and on planets is not a high priority for me... at the moment. :)

First and foremost planetary flight and landing as it was what already made Frontier spectacular and still not allowed in any other available game to date.

That's what make space not just big vaccum with 3D models sparsely scattered in and distant unreachable "planet sprites" or skyboxes.

That's what will make Elite more breathtaking like the first time you saw or flew through E:D asteroids rings. That's what will make deep space exploration meaningful.

This is also one of the hardest thing to develop to be on par with the current level of quality E:D is giving us.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really looking forward to FP too but IMHO it seems less essential for the simulation and the core of what Elite legacy is. Given they might not go for a hardcore shooter thingy, it could be easier to implement than planet landscape/cities generation, but there's ton of 3D assets to make to make it fun, manifold and with a real purpose for the simulation apart from immersion.

I voted for planetary landings.

Actually at this point I hardly care about a FPS component. I have been burned by X:Rebirth though. (I've been a fan of the X series and have been closely following those titles since the first non interactive engine demo of the first X title appeared from Egosoft. They have been great games, but with the last one they messed up splendidly... And walking around was one of the design decisions that made the game even worse, although not one of the design decisions that broke the game.)

Planetary landings on the other hand are a feature that I've seen implemented in games in ways that I would call successful. I'm especially having Elite 2 and 3 and Evochron on my mind here.

For Elite Dangerous both concepts however would have to be improved upon to the point where those implementations fit the overall awesomeness of the rest of the game, which will likely be the difficulty. Implementing planetary landings in the same quality seen in Evochron would be easy. Surpassing Evochron landings by magnitudes would likely still be easy for Frontier. Making landings feel as epic as the galaxy they are putting in ED will IMHO likely be a serious challenge even for Frontier.

(note: Reading my post again before hitting save I realized it's somewhat belittling Evochron. Please do not read the last paragraph as a criticism towards Evochron. I think that, in that game, the landings as they are implemented totally fit. I would consider it to be one of the most important space games of the last 15 years even if it had been created by an entire team of developers specialized in various fields. The fact that it was made by a single person makes it all the more impressive. I merely wanted to state, that an implementation of landings on that level would break the overall impression of Elite Dangerous.)

This. The game won't be complete for me until planetary landings are implemented.

This is just as well, because for me it's PLANETARY LANDINGS ..

Actually I don't care if I can't even land really! As long as I can find the Grand Canyon to zoom through pew pew .. and clouds .. :D

I would throw (even more) money at the screen to be able to formation fly through the Grand Canyon with my friends.

Defintely Planetary Landings. Really want to explore some of those interesting looking planets in the game...

I think there are enough First Person exploration games out there already!
Although a Space Engineers type thing might be fun.

Possibly FPS first for me. My thinking is that they would have longer to work on the procedural terrain tech, which would mean even better results when it came out.

If I could only choose one, it would have to be planetary landings though.

I don't mind which is first, whichever makes technical sense.
Which do I want more? Planets. Like others, it won't be truly complete for me without them. But I think it's the right choice to make it an expansion. It deserves full attention to make it amazing.

All those star systems waiting to be explored. An isolated planet far out in lonely space. The ability to fly through alien canyons on a world that no other human has seen.

SPL. Plenty of FPS/walking around games out there (and we'd only be able to walk around our ships and space stations without SPL remember) but no games I can think of with a full galaxy where you can seamlessly land on any planet you can visit. Plenty of gameplay to be added too - atmospheric entry with innumerable different conditions and effects (gravity, magnetic effects, acid, electric, pressure, blah blah blah). Asmospheric flight (and combat) with all those effects going on... could be very good, and original.

I'm quite excited at the possibility of combining the two. Flying to a planet, landing wherever you want and hopping out for a stroll sounds amazing. Even moreso if there's significant content there that can expand the game. Finding new resources/cargo, combat, exploration etc.

While it would take significant work (and likely annoy some of the playerbase), integrating ground-based combat could be huge. It would also make the game accessible to a wider audience, which some people might think is a bad thing.

Oops, I forgot Evochron and Rodina (check this one's demo, lightyears away graphically but really stunning experience). Yes they're featuring planetary flights too.

first person running around does not appeal to me tbh, it will get tiring quick. especially if its the same animations over and over

I have a dream, I stand up from the seat and walk around of an Anaconda's bridge, open the doors and go down the to the decks, I can see corridors, crew quarters, accces to the engines room and even a kitchen :p, then enter the cargo hold, and see hundreds of cannisters perfectly accommodated, and maybe my Eagle ready to fly , I prefer the FPS module first and then landing on planets, so I hope that we can walk on them :D.

A secondary question to this would be have you played Frontier/FFE? I suspect 90% of those that responded planetary landings have done. Certainly my current sample size (me) is 100% :)

Crashing into buildings is just more fun. Walking into them never feels quite so... expensive. Unless you strike golden and have to do a full dental. So will not rule out walking. But please let us crash into the Big Ben first. Or some other prominent structure! Good times ahead... :)

I dunno why, they were no more interesting than stations really, once you had seen one they were all much of a muchness.

You really need to be able to get out and explore to make it worthwhile so i suspect this si why the EVA DLC is planned first.

I'm pretty sure once people realise you can dock ships together or exit your airlock or board other ships or wander around the parklands of stations people will be happy to wait a bit longer for planets.
