Thinking about exploring...and a ship.

My first proper exploration trip I did in a DBX, being a huge fan of the DBS.

Its cheap, and you get to see how long your exploration limit is. (I start to go nuts after awhile).

Personally, I loved that trip so saved for the Asp that took me to Sag A.

Went nuts on the return and swore I wouldn't go back out in anything but an Anaconda.

Good luck when you go!

I haven't seen anybody mentioning the T-6, it is great for exploration. Lots of internals, great jump range, cheap, great cockpit for exploration.

Yow!
28 million for a Fuel Scoop!
Thanks for the build though between that, the Engineer upgrades, and my 6 hours a week playtime, that may be a future build.

A 6B fuel scoop is perfectly fine for the job and cost substantially less...bout 7m or so.

Heat sinks...never use them because they run outta ammo and ye can't synth more. If yer taking the sorta damage that ye really need them, then yer doing it wrong in the first place. I've been in a region since last monday where almost every third jump is right into the middle of a binary...can't remember the last time I actually took damage from one and I'm leaving the region tonight sometime with the same amount of HP as when I entered it...no heat sinks at all.

In terms of how? I turn anything off that I don't need to function and scan in SC which means I run normally at between 17 and 20%. From a standing start on a star, I usually won't reach higher than 110% which is critical, but falls short of the damage threshold.

Another way of looking at this will be that each heat sink weighs a ton and half, and once it runs out, then it's useless dead weight which serves no function whatsoever. It's a personal choice of course and yer free to use whatever ye want, I'm simply giving my own opinion on them and I'll be out here till xmas at least. In fact, if I could, then I might never return to the bubble...ever. So long as I can repair in Jacques, then I won't ever have to.

I do use two class 3 AMFU...one alone cannot repair itself and they weigh nothing...are childishly easy to restock and are pretty much a vital piece of kit for long term long range ^^

Even the 7A is very expensive at 91 M, but worth every penny in long journeys (ok, a 7B is almost as good and way cheaper).

Something to consider if you're interested in exploring cool planetary surfaces, rather than speed-jumping for max cr/hr: ship size is pretty crucial when landing. My Conda can pretty much only land on level terain. My Asp can land on hills and such. My Eagle can land pretty much everywhere, inside tiny craters and on top of mountains. Unfortunately, tt also doesnt have a shield or AFMU, its hull is paper thin and with its enhanced engines any mistake is instant death. :p Nevertheless, dont just go for the biggest ship if you can afford it, size is a drawback when exploring. And having some SC agility doesnt hurt your sanity either on long trips. On the other hand, the conda is a flying exploration fortress, and can bring any module you may even remotely need.

With the upcoming changes i would advice against a T6. While it is a great ship in itself, it is a bit underwhelming when attacked.

The Cobra III and IV are very nice ships. While they dont have the jumprange of the DBX/Asp, they are great multipurpose ships and have plenty of internals to accomodate all you need. And the MK III is also nice because it can evade most enemies by simply outruning them.

I took an iClipper to Sag A and back in 1.3. Fully loaded with exploration gear (minus SRV's, didn't exist yet) still got me a 25ly jump range. With the help of Farseer, you can do some proper exploration in style!

Thanks to all for the help and advice.
Made two runs to Ceos's and made enough to get this "free ship":

While the Asp is a better ship (and may be my step up) I think this one will serve me well on my, first ever, exploration run to see if I am really cut out for it or will fall victim to "space madness." We will see how far out I go.
Threw the fuel tank in instead of the SRV because, as I mentioned earlier, I have never driven one. Enroute this week to buy this ship so I may change my mind. More a bit of laziness on my part as the controller set-up for the SRV looks bewildering.

Kind of geeked to give this a try. Getting a serious Star Trek TOS vibe going - helped no doubt by the marathon the BBC is doing all weekend on BBC America!
Thanks again to all.

If you're going for a DBX, I strongly suggest that spring for the best scoop you can afford. The Asp can afford to economise a bit on the scoop (6C or even D is perfectly fine) because it's going in an enormous slot. The DBX's scoop is only size 4 and so a C grade one is going to slow your progress a lot. You also probably don't need the fuel tank (the extra 8t of fuel is knocking 0.7ly off your range by itself), maybe an AFMU instead if you don't want an SRV?

Ok thanks for the scoop tip.
I can bump it up a bit as I have some spare cash. Looked at the total refuel time on the current and it didn't look so bad - usually spend that time looking at the system/galactic map anyway but I will bow to your expertise.

And I decided to go all "Mr. Adventure" and swap that tank out for a SRV; thought more about it and thought "Heck this is a practice run so let's practice." Even with the SRV. Probably do a few trial landings and deployments well in the bubble to get into the swing of things.

Ideally, especially if ye wanna refill and AFMU or use jumponium, then an SRV is a vital piece of kit because at some point, you will be forced to find materials. Don't forget that different planets have different gravity...landing on a low g moon or planet is easy, while landing on high g planets and moons can be a little more challenging. All it takes is one bad landing to wipe out the larger half of yer hull, so would heartily recommend ye try a few landings first.

Personally, on much longer range trips, I take 2 SRV even though it puts a dent on range to fit the larger class 4 hangar. Losing an SRV can happen from time to time, but the good news is ye have a get out of jail free card...if ye die in an SRV, ye return to yer ship which is in orbit on auto pilot with the added bonus that all yer scanned data is intact. Don't know if it works twice cos I've never lost both SRV and considering what I stand to lose in scans, I don't really start experimenting outta curiosity.

Have fun learning to drive...bit like marmite, ye either love it or hate it ^^

You must be very quick on your feet sir - or fingers in this case. In my, quite rare, arrival in a bad spot/overheat scenarios not only am I very surprised but it also happens quite quickly.

The trick is to give yourself more time, and you do that by dropping from frame shift immediately. If you are using a throttle this is easy as is it polled constantly so you can throttle back to zero as soon as you begin the countdown to jump. Thus you drop out at 30km/s. If you drop in the deep end, you just immediately drop from frame shift. Take a few moments to compose yourself and then start to turn things off in an orderly fashion. Then go back up to frame shift and get out of the danger area, before turning everything back on again.

Anaconda has to be ridiculously stripped down to get great jump range

Bro do you even Engineer?

My current Anaconda explorer has a class 6 SRV bay, class 7 scoop, shields, both scanners, a pair of 6A AFMUs, decent thrusters, an additional 16 ton tank and jumps 49.75 LY. I can't say that I've ever thought 'damn, a shade under 50LY just isn't enough.'

Just trying to rationalize the ship this woman flew for 5 days on an exploration mission 200+ ly from the bubble, with a crew of 2+ people in an Eagle, while carrying 3 tons of food.

They have destroyed diamondback scout/explorer, type 6 and asp models so it's weird that they didn't chose one of those. Heck a crashed adder or cobra would have made more sense. You'd get space madness if trying to cross the galaxy in an eagle. At least the adder/cobra/asp are obviously designed for 2+ people.
