I kinda imagine everyone getting tiny font unless they pay. Although if FDev wanted to be extra cruel they could name our ships 'Flexible Demeanour' and stuff

Frontier can use pre-set words and allow us to use them in any order so for example I could use Illusive Thunder or something like that as long as it's a word in the dictionary that isn't a swear word. Sure you can't make a ship that has nonsense words like skudgethon but it'd be a great start to ship naming for future development.

Oo yeah, that could work. Certainly does for NPCs. (It might fall foul of the worry over on Reddit tho... that there'll be a milllllion 'Enterprises' & 'Fireflies'. Not sure how to stop that. Maybe enforce two-word names? 'The Peack Enterprise' or something instead...?)
It's a non-issue in my books. Let people name their ships what they want. If they have the maturity of a 5-year-old, so be it. If it's offensive, report it.

Not all Culture ship names are so long. I might have to abbreviate some my ship names if they exceed some strict character limit, but it is also common in the Culture that overly long names are most of the time referred to by some short hand. Sometimes only by the shorthand to the extent that barely anyone even knows the full name at all, and people are wondering what it is; for example the Mistake Not My Current State Of Joshing Gentle Peevishness For The Awesome And Terrible Majesty Of The Towering Seas Of Ire That Are Themselves The Mere Milquetoast Shallows Fringing My Vast Oceans Of Wrath.

Fair point though. Still, if you see someone's ship name is offensive, report it, FD will fix it. Or, you board his ship, take it from him and then sell it.
Or, perhaps make a penalty for crude names. If your ship name is reported, and it's found guilty of breaking the rules, your ship's name gets removed and you aren't allowed to assign a name to that ship again, nor can you assign a name to any other ship for 24 hours. You also get a strike against your CMDR. Three strikes and you are banned from naming ships.

Well, the worst things you can blacklist for most common languages. This will filter 95% of possible insults.
But 1st you cannot create idiot proof things, because already Murphy knew that those things are used by Idiots only.
2ndly we are talking about 3% of player who might think this type of names are funny. And here you get it stopped
that in 95% rate because of above mentioned blacklist.
So don't be too shy to bring innovation into that game. A tiny thing that will have huge impact of how Commanders
will feel treated in this game.
By the way FD can put this respectful naming into their licnese agreement So if it is too heavy they can ask for change
or ban.
