They'll be sorry when we run out of tinfoil.
I thing a part of the reason is, our mystery is so vague that we could be discussing the impact of seasonal trout migration in Canada on local political situation in Nigeria and it's correlation with the number of drunken bear fights in Severogorsk (but only during second full moon in month) and nobody would be any wiser that we are not talking on topic![]()
Sorry to not snip the quote, but I am functioning purely on mobile and it's so much hassle you wouldn't believe.
No the quote about octagonal ships and graveyards doesn't come from the Old lady, its musing of old admiral about (unrelated) things he saw in life designed as flavour text for kickstarter (iirc, later appearing in the Dark wheel), so it's very probably not a clue.
It turns up every few tenths of pages regardles.

In a bid to revert things to topic, I'm going to say the word "Phoenix" again, in the hope that somebody else (other than @Matzov) is wondering about it.
Im looking into it but the scope is so wide. Its so generic but in this search you just never know
It's a pretty dystopian setting: A thousand years in the future and yet not post scarcity economy, no massive advances, gravity is a luxury for many and we attempted genocide on the only other intelligent species we've met.
Anyway, at Chi Orionis atm, checking local news et al..

This is CMDR Gorm De Gamle reporting from the far side of the Heisenberg Bridge.
After months of travel behind the rift it is finally time to head home now.
Unfortunately I did not find anything suspicious during my time out here.
Is there some kind of consensus where to sell the collected exploration data?
Anyway - I'm curious how it will be back in the bubble.
I heard a new kind of guys and gals have appeared and they are called "The Engineers".
Maybe I should visit one of them and see what they can do to the modules oh my trusty Diamondback Explorer called "Prince"...?

You may want to sell your UC to an engineer. It will rank you up with them, so you get to start with the better dice rolls and effects
I found an Earth Like World and a water world orbiting each other with a terraformable world one orbit away in the Rift. That was pretty cool. I've come across a couple Earth Like Worlds in the Rift over the past few nights. I'm further into it than where I was last checking out but others had already come across them, this one with the water world was undiscovered so far. Just surprised to find so many ELWs out here.
Also, I'm not sure how this could be done in-game if it is possible maybe redirecting my ship while in witch space but I was several hours of game play in and was getting tired so my mind probably just clunked out, but there was a Neutron star system out there that only had 1 star system beyond in a branch off the main branch of linked star systems I could jump so it wasn't a central star but I made several jumps in different directions and finding branches of unexplored star systems I swear weren't there previously or I had actually passed through and scanned but several times I jumped in to a star system to have to immediately cut throttle and maneuver because that Neutron star was right there almost like I kept getting redirected to it while in witch space. I'm 99% sure FDev haven't programmed anything like that, so I chalked it up to "multi-jump psychosis" made two more jumps and called it a night.
Today I have attempted to retrace Salome's route from Tionisla to Cemiess. Since Economical routing should be the same for everyone, this was what I used, since I have no idea what her ship's jump range was to check fastest route options. Furthermore, it is possible that she might use Economical routing if she was not in a hurry - and she did stop off somewhere to make her discovery, which people don't do if they are just jumping and scooping to reach their destination asap. Otherwise, it is very difficult to envisage Salome's mindset as to what she would explore and why.

The detailed results:
As you can see, there's not a lot to investigate on this route. Only one uninhabited system has landable planets (Crucis Sector HH-M a7-0, where everything is landable and icy). Except for terraformed planets, there are few life-bearing planets and all are gas giants. There are no local Galnet articles of note except at Tionisla and Cemiess. There are some stations in odd orbits (I wonder if the one in Condovichs might be orbiting a comet?) but these are hardly likely to be related to a mystery connecting the Rift to other regions of the galaxy.system; landed/docked at; oddities/notes; local Galnet messages ('Herald')
Tionisla: Brett High (Orbis); Brett High has Industrial economy, despite being the only large station of an Earth-like World (terraformed); Children of Raxxla messages (15+19 AUG)/ Buckyball Racing Club event Old Worlds Hustle (21 JUN)

My guess is this is either just a storyline thread that we are meant to investigate after 2.2 when the pieces are in place, or else the pieces are already in place but there's still plenty of unexplored acres on the landables present in which to hide it and it needs silly resources of commander time and luck to find it - there's no knowing where Salome might have landed, or why (never mind how contrived it would be that she just stumbles on this stuff - maybe a tip-off mission, otherwise it would be astronomically unlikely to just land next to the 'it' that she found).
.
Good luck to anyone else looking in this region!
