Horizons Genuine Problem, Genuine ADVICE appreciated....

I have been away a while. A year in fact. I play offline, something about the security and alleged safety of only dealing with NPCs just does it for me. Yeah, I know, I am a wuss. But it's okay, a game is for fun and if I can control how my fun is delivered then great. Anyway, I digress.
Previously I was doing a Rares loop, spending a couple of hours every couple of days flying about trying to make as much money as quickly as possible. I wanted something better than my Asp, even though it had served me so well for trading and in combat. I was able to save up and buy a Python. I kitted it out with equipment a grade or two above stock level and proceeded to go about my Rares loop. Along the way for some absurd reason I spotted some crates floating about and decided to investigate. A couple of high value boxes looking to be collected so out came the scoop. You know where this is going.....A flock of Fer De Lances appeared, first 3, then another 2, then a further 3. 8 FDLs were locked on and would not be outrun. My Python was shredded, my bank balance was insufficient to pay the insurance and I was back in my Asp.......the inevitable rage quit ensued.

In the mean time someone decided it would be cool if the galaxy had factions. Then that we should actually visit the planets we had been passing by. Not to mention all the minutiae that has happened along the way, balance changes, nerfs and buffs, stuff that I have not been able to keep up with because I was not playing or keeping track of events.

I had an email, I bought Horizons, but have not played. So, my problem is this:

Should I delete my save and start all over in the universe because basically it is a new universe, or should I persevere (because that Asp has done so much for me and has been a significant investment) and try to adapt to the new environment? I don't get the opportunity to play very often at all but Elite is a special game to me from when I used to play Frontier Elite 2 on my Amiga CD32 (who didn't love the jettison to increase your cargo glitch?) and I play to indulge my youthful appetite. One day I would love to have the ultimate battle cruiser, the ultimate hyper-ranged explorer vessel, the short range ninja combat ship, but for now, I just want to have a little fun and work towards small goals and enjoy the graphics, the detail, the immersion, that this game can bring.

Genuine helpful advice related to this would be welcomed, please try not to flame or be insulting, you guys have been here forever and obviously you know so much more than me and it will be obvious in your responses. Thankyou.

You broke the one rule: Dont fly without rebuy.

I would say keep the ASP and do not start over. It is one of the most versatile ships in the game. Even with access to every ship in the game, I still find myself flying my Asp Explorer on a regular basis. Another reason is that the AI has been made slightly smarter and so I am not sure if you want to work your way up to the ASP again. My advice is to take it easy, enjoy the game, and always have credits for a rebuy. There is a lot to see when you have been away from the game for a long time.

HI there! Ah, the Amiga CD32, better than us plebs with the 500+ ! And yes, I remember the cargo glitch. So many glitches in that game, but I loved it all the same.

Well bad luck about the Python - but the Asp is a great ship. At least you weren't put back in the Sidey.

I don't think you should restart. Simply because you will continue not to play very often, so regardless of what you will do, you will have to continually adapt, as ED is changing all the time. The adaptation isn't as much as you think, perhaps apart from the improved NPCs. I think what you want in the game at the moment is more achievable in an Asp, then a Python, than right back at the start.

It's sad that you have to appeal to people not to flame or insult you. I doubt that would have happened.

Only bought the Amiga 500 to play Elite. Saved up every penny. Started on the C64, wanted to enjoy the graphics on the Amiga :)

Keep the Asp Explorer. It will outrun any NPC. Be sure to highwake out. Consider mine launchers if you wan to get rid of stubborn NPC's. Run the Biowaste train from Sothis/Ceos for serious credits.

I'm going to buck the trend and say wipe your save game.

Why? The NPCs are much tougher then they used to be. If you return to the game with a rank of "harmless" they'll be much more likely to leave you alone until you've had a chance to relearn your combat skills.

He can ask customer support to reset his combat ranking to harmless if he is having a lot of trouble with the NPCs. Harmless combat rank while keeping the ASP would be the ideal solution if you ask me.

G'day Awsome T.
The asp ex is perfect for you to make some decent money quickly.
1. Fit it out with double mine launchers on all hardpoints.
2, A grade Frame shift Drive , Powerplant, Shields and Power distributor. anything else can be D for light weight
3. Cargo racks of course and an additional fuel tank ( for those dead stars on the Ceos to bubble runs..]
4. Find a nice run thats about 8 to 10 light years apart (Sothis /Ceos) or Wu Ghangi)
5, Depending on the System your in, Take only Alliance or Federation data couirer runs. and cargo runs.
6. Learn to stack your mission so that your runs are productive.

As you build up rep and influence points, the amount that the faction your working for (allince or Federation) will give you better paying missions.

INTERDICTION
Have a plan... be prepared..
run with 3 pips to SYS, three pips to Eng,

As soon as interdicted, throttle back, as soon as you stop spinning, boost away towards your next star and let the interdictor get directly behind you, set him up so that his ship on the radar is not above or below, boost, lay a pattern of three sets of mines, boost. pattern again, pattern of mines, boost, stow weapons, fsd outa there.

ENGINEER MODS
Have your FSD increased first if your going to do long hauls.
Have your thruster increased first if you going to do short hauls.

Fit at least one heatsink launcher
Fit the other slots with shield booster
Dont worry about Military spec armour, your going to be light and fast...remember boost is your friend.
Have fun, expect to be interdicted , so be prepared with a plan and you will survive.

Yours Aye D38

There are three ways you can go from here.

1, Clear Save.
2, Carry on as you are.
3, Buy a Sidewinder, do a bit of maths, and work with a starting point of 1,000cr (so that, while you have a lot more in credits, you only work with the normal starting amount, and go from there).

The advantage of option 3 is that you have the safety net of the Asp Explorer and your full financial balance. Option 1 is a no way back choice.

I have a simple rule when buying a new ship (assuming I am keeping the old ship), which is; Make sure to have 200% of the purchase price first. That way you have enough for the ship, some basic outfitting, a couple of cargo loads, and a couple of REBUYs (just in case). If you ARE going to sell the old ship, take it back to factory condition first. When you sell a ship you WILL take a 10% hit on the value of the ship at the time of sale (and this will include any upgrades). However, if you take the ship back to factory standard FIRST you will get back the full amount you paid for the upgrades (at this time, at least; but this may change in the future), and then your losses will be reduced. For example, my Cobra MkIII is currently worth 10Mcr. If I were to sell her as she is I would take a 1Mcr hit. However, if I take her back to factory spec first, and then sell her, my losses will be around 34Kcr.

After 2.1 dropped I briefly considered wiping my save and starting a fresh character named CMDR Brave Sir Robin
HAHA cool idea! After the first shock of the new AI..... I now like the fact that i really have to think all the time what to do and how to run away! I for one welcome our new NPC overlords.

I played the Amiga version on A1200 030 50mhz, and it still felt a little slow. But yes it was an immense game with lovable bugs and quirks which gave a lot of pleasure.

This game feels even more immense due to so many more location, but the faction thing is an illusion, I never bother with it, and is for people who like to do the same things for days.

I would continue but keep the Asp, as it has good shields and very good firepower for its class, and avoid war zones, stick to Res. Yes it will need some getting used to, but going back to a low ship and no credits really isnt much fun, and I'd only recommend it to Elite players who have nothing more to play for.

I would advise the same as what others are saying. Since you wish to have a "fresh" experience. Keep what you have and buy a smaller ship and work your way up. This way you have a fall back plan.

You do not want to wipe your save, trust me, I wanted that "fresh" experience and wiped a save once, still regret it.

Amiga...good times spent with that :) Anyway, my advice is to keep playing and NOT start over. ASPX will be the backbone of your money making so even if you start again you will eventually end up buying one again. It's best used by me for smuggling so if you are interested into that to raise your money hit me with a PM and I will teach you whatever I know about Robigo runs and how to fit your ASPX as you really need FSD A graded and lvl 3 A graded shields and the rest lower grades. But whatever you do, keep in mind the money you need for the re-buy. Fly safe CMDR.

Keep your CMDR file.

I recently started a new account/CMDR so that I could use one for deep space, and the other for normal play.
One of the changes is that of individual reputations with each faction.
For example, I wanted to visit Sol, but it takes ages to build reputation again, remembering that as "neutral" you don't get the big payout missions -. As I discovered at Robigo where no one would offer me a mission.

Try getting to Sothis, then doing the Sothis <=> Ceos data missions loop. That should generate income and reputation. After a while you'll see some multi million credit missions.
I've flown that loop in the Asp with minimal shields and no weapons, you may have the rare interception, but I've not lost a ship there.

Fly careful
