Newcomer / Intro A Rather Damn Decent Game...

I was going to write, `I love this game OMG- It`s wonderful!`

But that was too sycophantic and un-British. Also girly.

I just wanted to say I think this is a damn decent game\sim. I say `sim` because it has quite a lot of `simmish` qualities compared to realistic flight sims I usually fly. I`m going to list what I really like about this game.

1. The whole finding and landing on Starbases, outposts, etc routine. I love having to ask permission, find the actual docking bay, slowdown (or I get a warning) lower gears and land. Heck even the best present day WW2 flight sim doesn`t expect such a landing routine!

2. I like the `escape from interdiction` flying you can try if some git tries to pull you out of Light speed.

3. Getting watched and scanned by various other pilots making me nervous.

4. Locking on them and getting an alert that they`ve readied their weapons cos they`re nervous what I`m going to do.

5. The `random encounters` at signal points add a LOT to the game for me. I like checking them out and I really appreciate how they can be interesting, from flying through dense wreckage of some fight or disaster to jumping into a trap or just finding someone who`s run out of fuel. Great stuff.

6. The whole Warp procedeure- excellent.

7. Landing on planets- excellent. After NMS this makes up for that disappointment.

8. Someone got caught trying to illegally enter a base and was shot at by Police!

9. The mission`s screen is very good. I like the way people appear randomised to give some variety and the amount of missions are great. Very dynamic. I suspect the dynamism is from the Online aspect of this game. Would be nice to have some speech in the missions though. Or maybe have the text scroll like it`s been typed to you.

10. I like how you start to lose oxygen from your ship if too badly damaged and the screen starts frosting up.

11. I like that you can run out of fuel and die. Yep, teaches one the reality of not planning and treats you like an adult. Never change.

12. Space feels... `spacey`.

13. The sun looks great and I love how things get hotter the more you hang around it- Hot!Hot!HOT!

14. Love the variety of voices at stations from African to Scottish, adds a good feel that the Human race is in space.

15. AI`s pretty good in my view.

16. Trying to figure logical ways to do things. Thumbs up!

Just great immersion!

I have some criticisms, but that can be for later.[yesnod]

Agreed on all points!
As far as the FEEL of being a space pilot in a real space, doing spacey things, looking at gorgeous spacey stuff goes, Elite will probably never be beaten, until DBOBE decides to make Elite 2, 20 years from now.

This game is wonderful to live in.

Hear hear and a jolly nice list sir!

Alternatively you can call the Fuel Rats, an ever vigilant player run group (of which I'm proud to be a member) who've rescued in excess of 15,000 players and who's average rescue time is less than 15 minutes!

When the next release hits you (1.7 / 2.2) you will be able to address each of your points by coming back and: increasing font size, underlining, highlighting, making the colours flash and just generally going bananas at how great it is.

(P.S. I quite like the improvements in Passengers / Guardians. )

Technically, the next new Elite game would be Elite 5. Elite 1, was back in 1984, Frontier Elite 2, was late 80s (I Think), Frontier First Encounters (Elite 3) was a couple of years later and Elite Dangerous is Elite 4. ;)

True, true. I keep considering ED a kind of a re-boot, but it isn't accurate as there is a steady timeshift present throughout the games. Maybe the next one will be Elite: Deadly. :D

Well...

I like this image. It's very accurate. :)

I think the most exciting bit is flying back to a station with the canopy blown out. Sounds are fantastic and the lack of HUD just makes the whole thing more difficult coupled with the oxygen counter reducing. It is so atmospheric when this happens.

I agree 100%. It's so nice to see a post where someone isn't ripping the game to shreds. I'm constantly amazed when I login to the game at the scale and detail it contains. I'd also add a small thing about the clock, which is always set to GMT. At first I was annoyed because I couldn't work out why the clock was off by one hour. It was then that someone on the forums pointed out that all ships are set to GMT time in real life, and it made perfect sense. Superb game, and I think it's only going to get better with each new release.

Alec you need to come around more, we are currently just breaking past the 16,500 figure!! :D

Are you going for 20k before Christmas?
I can run out of fuel for you a couple of times, if it helps. :p

Haha, at this rate (around 50 a day on average I'd guesstimate) that'd be possible (70 days required, 88 days remaining). Also it's kinda sad there are websites that year round count the days till christmas...

Alec - Yeah, best get drinking so we can use them up or hand them out. Any plans for 20k ones, would we keep the buckyball association on the back? Any colour ideas? oooh that's got me excited now :)

Ahhh, I see what you've done there ... you've assumed the "Fuel Rats" logo is on the front!
The real question (for the BRC) is "would WE keep the Fuel Rats association on the back". :p

P.S. sorry SeaFireLiv ... Alex and I have totally hi-jacked your beautiful thread about what an awesome game Elite is with our good natured banter. I blame my high spirits on the news that my Oculus has just been delivered! I'll take myself off to the VR side of the forum now. o7

If you have access to the beta I am told the new Wytch space is quite the ride in VR.

My only reservation (not VR wise) about the new hyperjump is the amazing noise you get on arrival - it nearly made me have to change my boxers the first time. It is definitely too loud - to stop this disturbing the neighbours I have to turn all effects down and so spoils other effects.

First, let me welcome you to the Elite: Dangerous Galaxy. My rule 2 is; Have Fun (it is just a game, but WHAT a GAME!).

The learning curve is so steep that the mountain goats go around in teams, roped together (and even then they may fall off, but that means the Vultures get to eat!). However, when you master something, and do it well, the buzz is worth the effort.

Now, Rule 1, which is; Never Fly if you cannot cover the REBUY. REBUY is the insurance excess on your ship, and is 5% of the value of your ship (including all upgrades, but not the cargo). If you get killed, and you can cover the REBUY, you will get a replacement ship identical to the one you lost. However, if you cannot cover the REBUY you may well end up back in a basic Sidewinder. Please do not let this happen to you, as the forum is littered with tales of woe when other Players have ignored Rule 1, and then got killed. This links to the latest I have seen;

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showth...a-year-of-work

When you decide to buy a new ship, try to have 200% of the purchase price first. That way you have enough for the ship, some basic outfitting, a couple of loads of cargo, and a couple of REBUYs (just in case). If you are trading in a ship, take it back to factory spec first. When you sell any ship you will always take a 10% hit on the value of the ship at the time of selling. However, if you take it back to factory spec first you get back the full amount that you paid for the upgrades (at this time, at least). Then, when you sell the ship, your losses will be reduced. For example, I have an A Rated Cobra MkIII worth 10Mcr. If I were to sell her now I would take a loss of 1Mcr. However, if I take her back to factory spec and then sell her my loss will be about 35Kcr.

Have fun, fly safely, and see you out amongst the stars. Feel free to ask any questions, we all had to learn somewhere, and those that care will answer all they can.
