[VIDEO] Canopy Breach

Well I had a lot of fun with this. Of course it was only *fun* in hindsight - what started out as a straight run back to base for repairs had me anxious and wondering if I'd make it back home.

I love this kind of emergent gameplay where a number of things come together to tell a story in an unscripted way. My choice to leave combat for repair, to fight or run from an interdiction, the stress of navigating in supercruise under time pressure...

edit: well it was bound to happen again at some point. Spot the differences between premium beta 1 and 2 http://youtu.be/dpkcL67X1ao

Enjoy!

That was excellent, great flying! I really LOL'd with the bit at the end (no spoiler), I can just imagine you saying "what the [expletive deleted]"

I had a cracker last night with that. I had the canopy breach, gunned it back to the station, got permission to land but was ejected as I was about to touch the pad. Well funny thing is I didn't die but connected to the starport services and managed to repair ship and modules. I thought wow that was as close as you could possibly get.
Anyway went for launch but my view through the helmet/canopy was really blurry and as soon as I launched I had no control of the ship at all and I couldn't see much either.
I decided to ctr/alt/del as I presumed it was a crash etc, logged back in but went straight to new sidewinder loadout screen.

I think I must of reached another dimension or the other game in development Elite: Re-carnation.
Good fun anways!:D

Nice flying and you got really lucky that you dropped out not only 12 km from the station, but also right in front of the docking gate. You probably would not have survived if you'd had to fly around the station.

Although, this again makes me question why they still use glass for spaceship canopies in 3300. Certain transparent ceramics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transparent_ceramics, which are also considered for use as transparent armor plating (e.g. aluminium oxynitride http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium_oxynitride) would be a much better choice. Or, since we are already using holographic technology, just do away with most or all of the transparent material for the cockpit and use armor sheets, dotted with small cameras on the outside and a host of micro monitors (e.g. hexagonal with say a 5 cm diameter) on the inside. Would keep the pilot much more safe and by using hundreds or thousands of microcameras and hundreds or thousands of micromonitors on the inside, it would also be quite resistant to damages to the system. Computer power at that time should be more than able to handle controlling such systems and have redundancy backups.

Nice. I think this vid shows that (when the timer bug is fixed) an 8-10 minute oxygen supply once you're canopy is breached might be better for gameplay purposes. You video wouldn't have been a fraction of good if you just ejected after two minutes! 10 minutes supply would be fairly acceptable lore-wise I think for a pilots own helmet supply.

I do find the whole "just survived, limp to a dock" appealing, I bet you had a real sense of achievement there!

Very tense video though :)

Very epic video! I had a similar thing happen to me two days ago.. the only difference is, I blew up as I landed too quickly. As I passed the docking ring, I was 5 seconds from the timer counting down to 0, so I rushed my landing a bit.. :D Still, the experience was thrilling like nothing else out there can do.

I came fairly close to the station, but I didn't come straight toward the docking ring, but the opposite side. That's what took most of my time.

Very cool ! love it

Fantastic stuff :) I thought that Sidewinder would nail you but you made it. Excellent showcase of the canopy getting damaged and surviving it. 10 min sounds better than just 2 min of oxygen left. Gives you time to go back and repair.

I'd prefer to think of it as missing gameplay balance rather than a bug to be exploited :)

Glad everyone enjoyed it - hopefully a good counter to the "supercruise is boring" refrain. There still more to come in the game and it is (only!) Beta.

In space everyone can hear a Remlok scream.

Dealing with emergencies with a queue jumping system would be a small touch that would be appreciated by all who end up in such an emergency.

I wonder how many get the Remlok reference :) I think I'm just showing my age.

Edit: too many autosuggestion typos.

I have noticed that the countdown has started again several times. It was each time you have left the hyper cruise. Is this a bug?

But anyway it was quite intense moments you had there :)

Currently, each time you switch instances (e.g. activating/deactivating frameshift drive) the countdown is reset, but as the countdown is, at this time, a placeholder anyway, it is okay for it to do it. I believe they will set it to 10-15 minutes once the systems of full life support loss is implemented and then they will likely have in place a carry over of the remaining countdown once you switch instances.

Wow sweaty palms or what!!! ;)

Two minutes is not a lot of time to reach safety in a situation like that, good job theres the bug resetting the clock each time you come in and out of supercruise :D
