player stations may come... !

I would love to be able to construct some kind of subterranean base on a planet constructed out of essential modules, like:
Living quarters, infirmary, armory, hangar, power, defense, oxygen, water/food etc. etc.
Exactly...a hangar of my own with a little bit of customization would be amazing.

Braben talked about possible player home bases right from the start.
He mentioned some mechanic to build a base in an asteroid.
Of course these were not promises, but it was on his mind from day one of the kickstarter.

This would be such a cool money and time sink.
And they could sell all kinds of cool vanity stuff for this too.
It would be a cool way to support FD.
I'd be all over this.

I like to sign all of this

FD will charge you for every piece of custom décor you want to use, and not give you the ability to add your own.

If the feature does come it's prime motivation will be solely for selling custom décor.

As long as they give us some basic customization options like wall colours or lighting colours I would be more than willing to pay 1 or 2 euros to have a plant in there or a fridge or something like that.

i would also love a small ragtag station somewhere in the galaxy which belongs only to me. run by automated systems or run by a paid (npc) crew. not unlike how it is in X3, but not in that scale.

but if it would require multiplayer cooperation to even own a station, i would just evade the hassle.

new stations will probably be minor faction (player backed ones to) and theyll use that as a mechanic, it will be player supported but not player owned

The whole animal kingdom want their own space station?
Looks like we've got more than Thargoids to worry about, lads.

Drop into a USS salvage site. Come face to face with a Seal sat on some Anaconda debris flapping around to generate momentum to get it to move close to other debris.

You sit there for 30 minutes as more Seals arrive and do the same with other chunks of debris as they build themselves a space fort.

Job done, they gather around their newly constructed junk station and give you a stern look that makes it clear this is now their domain and your presence is not desired. You turn around and continue on your way.

Part of one of many new animal related encounters coming in "Elite Dangerous Season 4: Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my!"

AWESOME!!!

Great to hear the man himself confirm it!

But he didn't confirm it. It's like saying they confirmed ship naming, when they keep saying it's something they are considering, but not a priority yet.

I've been here a while (ie longer than nearly everyone on this forum), read a lot of stuff, and have a very good feel and idea what Frontier will do, and trust me when I say Elite will NEVER have player owned stations. This thread is a waste of time.

and now hopefully because you said they will never do it, they will. just despite you...

Player owned stations = It'd be pointless.

Stations have - Shipyard & Outfitting, fuel & repairs, weapons and docking permission.

If you put discounts on fuel/repairs they are so cheap it doesn't matter anyway.
If you put discounts on shipyard/outfitting it'd pretty much be "pay a large 1 time lump sum for the station to save money in the long run". Everyone would just complain about the grind.

Neither of those to me categorise "ownership" as discounts (Li Yong Rui etc) already exist too.

If you give people weapon control and docking permission it turns into griefer's wet dreams and half the galaxy becomes somewhere only the owner can dock.

Visual customisation can't be done as all art has to be put into the game and with over 1mil players it's just gonna get crazy very quickly.
Devs have said they don't want to make it Elite spreadsheets and fleet management so you can't get credits over time from owning stations.

Further to the station ownership problem: How does it transfer, how can owners of stations survive attacks/challenges from solo/group players. Or players in different instances or timezones. It sounds to me like it'd provoke a lot of hurt especially given the cost anticipated to buy a station when we look back and see 4000+ players were involved in building 1 single station.

Now, all that having been said I don't see why you'd want player stations as any control would be so limited you may as well say "hey, this station over here is mine".

Can any one explain to me what a candidate feature is? I never heard the term, but it sounds to me as if it's a feature that is in line for consideration, but no where near certain to be implemented.

But as I said, don't know the term, I might be wrong.

The problem with player-owned stations is the implementation. After a few weeks you will have to travel quite a long way until you find one that isn't owned. Presumably you don't lose the station if you stop playing for a few weeks or a few years so 4 years from now imagine how far you would have to travel to find an unowned station! There is a similar problem with the idea of inhabital asteroids or the inflatable base idea as they would be absolutely everywhere.

I think the best solution would be some form of rental model or voting to be a governor type role so the numbers automatically prune themselves.
