2.2 Not the time to return

I guess 2.2 is not the time to return for someone who has left Elite because his Euro Truck Fighting skills where to poor for engineers?
Or has there been any major change that lets me play in a beginner mode?

I don't quite understand your question... but it's always a good time to play Elite!

You can filter the galaxy map on security status now, so you can do your Euro Trucking with a little more depth, ensuring you stay safe.

The game AI wise did not really change, they are easy one on one (of course if not much bigger than you), but if they swarm you with railguns (which can only happen in Combat Zones) you can be in rather bit of a mess... BUT the game now features a rather nice Tutorial segment which even if you are a seasoned player is worth giving a shot as its voice acted and refreshes memories rather nice :) + you can practive without fear of loosing anything. The game in general got a facelift with graphics, new stuff to explore on planets and in space. If you pick your missions carefully you can get by without much of a fuss :)

You don't have noob friendly starting areas like you do in WOW or in most single player games. It is Elite : "Dangerous" after all.

I suggest you practice on the tutorials to get better. I must have done the starter combat missions 20 times trying different tactics.

If you're asking has the game become easier in 2.2, then no, it's not easier.

It is, however, more interesting and engaging, with more content and more mission types and etc.

They've improved the beginning game a bit, too. Starting a new commander is easier now, although the game only holds your hand for the first mission. After that, you're on your own again :)

The Galaxy of newly released 2.2 is not the same place as the first couple of weeks of 2.1. Survival in the early game should not be a problem if you learn how to run away (lots of posts on this) and pick your fights. Basic missions seem to have got a bit tight on pay outs at the moment, which will make early progression a bit slower, but (hopefully) the devs are looking at a rebalance (or fix).

I would say it's a good time to return, as there is more to look at, and a bit more to do.

Give it a few hours... you know you want to....

@K-Rose:

I'll try to explain it to you. My prefered play style is trader.
Look in the market list, see what is cheap - buy. Fly to the next system that requires the goods - sell.
If it comes to planing save routes or try to figure out what weapons are best - i'm out.

'Dangerous' in the context of ED's name does not refer to danger in the galaxy It alludes to the rank required within the Elite Federation Of Pilots required to be regarded as suitable for higher tier contracts. There is a David Braben YouTube video about this, though I can't find it so you'll have to take my word for it.

What's your combat rating? Only NPCs from around deadly+ [may] have engineered weapons, so if your rank is low you are unlikely to come across any special weapon equipped NPCs. The general fighting style of the NPCs has improved a bit, but at lower levels it really amounts to them no longer sitting in one place and twirling in space.

If you have a high combat rating gained primarily by destroying brainless NPCs from earlier versions, then log a ticket and the support team and reduce your combat rank, should you so desire.

Also, it's not particularly difficult to unlock a number of the low-to-medium engineer upgrades for your own ships. Stuff like level 3 thruster upgrades and level 5 FSD range can be gained from just one engineer with hardly any rare components needed and those changes alone more than make up for the difference in NPC ability.

You can also avoid low sec / anarchy systems really easily now as they can be filtered in the route planner and seen before you jump. In any other system, the police will eventually jump in to help you out in a crises, so as long as you can survive a short while then you are relatively sure of being able to wake out of trouble.

Of course, PvP action is another question entirely, but that hasn't ever really changed: there's always been the chance that another human player is better than you or better equipped than you, and there still is.

Elite is inevitably going to have a slight level of planning when it comes to Trading...

Maybe you should just buy & sell on real stock markets instead? It's a bit safer, you can use small amounts of money and maybe even make something for yourself.

i am surprised you can even bring yourself to boot up the computer...

Yes, it is a good time to play. You may need to do a bit of searching on the map screen but once you find a system with high security, an agricultural station and also a refinery, you can truck back and forth in the same system, while listening to "Convoy", with little worry about being attacked, and if you are, then the cops will soon show up. :) Fly safe CMDR.

nope, those of us, including myself, who didn't spend every waking moment of their lives grinding matts to throw them away in this rediculousness have no chance to do anything and still cannot hope to compete still. Keep it uninstalled and save yourself the headache of being one-shot by eagles in your A-anaconda or melting and dyeing with your shields never having dropped below 70% within seconds.

I haven't played with them yet, but my impression is that the headliner feature of 2.2 Guardians of having ship launched fighters to watch your back in a scrape is going to have the overall effect of making life easier for traders & explorers. If they can be troubled to use them. In my experience, a lot of the pilots in either of those groups are often strangely resistant to taking preventive self defense measures.

Anyone that's actually used the ships and pilots - how is the fighter AI? Are the elite pilots actually worth their cost?

If yer out, I'd give it a couple more weeks till they fix the stuff they broke. Engineers are still the vertical grind they were, and without them, yer nothing more than target practice fer those who have and and and...always another and...

Anyway, if yer on the way back in then hold the door...I'm just about done here, fer the time being anyway ^^

Hello SirW, Don't worry about all the players that simply can't grasp the concept of "I don't like fighting, but still like playing Elite". I'm with you and there must be one or two others around :).

Anyway, even if you play as a pure trader, you cannot avoid being interdicted by NPC's BUT, if you don't even try to fight and pilot a half-decent ship with a good shield, you can Hi-hump to a different system to escape long before they chew through your shield. When you jump back to the system (if necessary) they usually be gone and you can continue in peace. Don't bother with just going back into SC, as they will simply interdict you again.
Note the above becomes more difficult, the more your combat rank rises, but as you wont be fighting it will stay at Harmless :)

If you take missions, read the text carefully as you may get NPC's sent after you as part of the missions. These NPC's will NOT go away by hi-jumping as they are persistent until you complete the mission, or kill them.

If you like peaceful mining too, just make sure you have absolutely no cargo apart from limpets when entering a ring and drop into it well away from the marked extraction sites. You will be intercepted and scanned on entry, but when they see you have no cargo they will wander off muttering. Fly at least 20K's in the opposite direction and start mining in peace (They never come back if you are not in a marked site).

Hope this helps with a more relaxed and passive approach to Elite. It tries to stop you, but it is possible to play with very little pew-pew :)

PS, I also play ETS2, ATS and I just bought Farming Simulator 17 so I totally get playing games that don't involve shooting people in the face :)
