Open Letter to Fdev DECALS, By the CANONN

Zac if you read this then I didn't even know this letter existed when I commented on the other thread.

Coincidence or chance..?

It is obvious that I support this.

A space station is a pretty good thank you as well as stacks of Galnet coverage. Im a Canonn member and I dont think having a decl is an issue. If anything I'd like the time spent creating a decal spent on adding a bit mor epolish to the other ingame graphics, for teh good of the community.

I'd happily pay my (not so hard) earned cash on a nice Canonn decal, or any other sets of decals they choose to stick up on the store front for that matter. I am fairly sure I am not the only one either.

This really is insulting. Upstarts that failed to become powers can get decals for their ships but the Emperor (and other powers) still have none?!? Loyal Imperial, Federation and Alliance citizens, members of the Kumo crew, Utopia and Sirius have been waiting for these since the start of PP.

Canonn stayed out of the Dangerous Games because joining PP would have destroyed us. Our apolitical stance is what allows us to put science ahead of politics and advance human understanding of mysterious things. Our membership includes people pledged to each power as well as people who would rather cut off their own arm than pledge. Science, whisky and biscuits brought us together and politics stays at the door. After two Ed Eds, press coverage and the teams we send to shows to help promote ED surely we deserve a few pixels on our ships to show our allegiance to the noble goal of expanding our knowledge of the universe!

Just to share what's in the current folder structure....
Let's be clear - there are other groups included that stayed out of the Dangerous Games but have a larger membership (Mobius at 29,000ish).
As this isn't available in game yet it really makes no difference. Yet.
Completely agree that the Canonn should get included and I'm sure it will be.

More decals in game is always better. Better yet, ability to "pledge" to minor factions too, even if they're not part of PP or anything.
And more decals should start with Canonn ;) *is not bias at all*

just because the decal is in the game doesn't mean any human players can use them. Been a member of Utopia for over a year and I can't put the Utopian decal on my ships. That's an actual in-game powerplay faction that i'm listed as belong to in the game and i can't simultaneously be a member of another powerplay faction officially.

When you have to choose a group and forsake all others in the game, then you should be allowed to wear the decal of that group you're actively in. It shouldn't be allowed to just willy nilly wear a group's decal.

Oh my... is that... powerplay decals I see at the bottom there? If they finally do implement those, I will dance with joy. For a moment. Then I going to stop dancing, get into the game and outfit myself with a glorious Mahon decal :D Would actually prefer a straight up Alliance decal (in the proper Alliance green, of course), but Mahon will be close enough. Though of course, running both at the same time would be ideal, plus a player faction decal in the 3rd spot if mine ever gets one (which, of course, I also believe we deserve ;))!

Just to quibble a bit, Mobius' 29,000 "membership" isn't really a valid comparison to any other group. The vast majority of that 29,000 joined the private group as a PvE equivalent of Open, they never signed up to Mobius as a faction or player group. I use the Mobius PG regularly so I'm counted in that 29,000 but I've never visited a Mobius thread, forum, or website; I've never taken part in a Mobius event; I don't even know what the Mobius home system is.

Good point. Perhaps I should leave Mobius as I generally only use the Canonn PG now.

Here's a question that no one here seems to have considered - who decides who gets to use a potential Canonn decal? I can't think of a single decal in game that isn't locked away behind some kind of requirement. I didn't participate in the DWE, so I can't get that decal. I didn't do Dangerous Games for EG, so I can't get that decal. I'm not Combat Elite, so I can't get that decal.

Until there's a proper way to limit and decide who can use a decal, there's no point in it being in game.

For PowerPlay this is easily done - if you're pledged, you can use a decal, yet even that hasn't been added to the game yet.

I see your point. I would say that I would expect the vast majority of those that join a private group designed for a specific purpose would be interested in the option to show their allegiance to the ideal through putting on the decal.

Well, for me this points at the post from Martin Schou about control of the use of the decals. In this case if you've joined the group but never visited the (very active) Forum etc, I can assume that you've not read the groups rules etc....

And perhaps this sort of discussion is why FD have been slow in getting the decals out there. What's to stop someone from The Code from putting on a Mobius decal without controls? And if they did, does it matter?

You realize of course ,everyone going to want decals the minute Frontier starts handing them out.. the work involved ,most likely the reason its not been done

that , or the request for Wheel of Life decals , which no doubt will come.

Very hard to argue against Delmonte on this. Canonn deserves it's own decal for all of the same reasons that Distant Worlds did. They are doing a lot of excellent PR work on behalf of Elite: Dangerous and Frontier is reaping the rewards.

The problem, as I see it, is finding a way of determining WHO gets such a decal. I posted a few times on the Barnacle megathreads. Do I qualify? The moment Frontier starts handing out a free decal then they have to start figuring out who actually gets one. What is the criteria? It would be a logistics nightmare for Frontier to deal with all the support requests from people who think they deserve the decal because they blew up a Barnacle once.

I'd love to see more decals in this game but how do you go about policing who gets the decal and who doesn't? You need to apply objective criteria which is so very hard to do using lists of players provided to Frontier. There needs to be a way IN-GAME for Frontier to track who is a member of Canonn and who isn't.

This is just another area where having Player Minor Faction tags in the game makes so much sense. If you are allied with Canonn and flying with the Canonn's tag then you should be allowed to display a Canonn decal. No need for anyone from Canonn to have to sort through who gets the decal and who doesn't. Let the game sort it for us.

On a related note: Frontier should allow the community to submit their own logos to be rendered as in-game decals. Just give us the file format and requirements. Lots of artists in this community. I would be more than happy to pay good money to design my own decal or even just to paint the name of my ship on my hull.

Did you spend days and weeks making videos and PR stuff? How about use your own money to buy Fdev goods and give them to your "Friends" or maybe design and Print
hundreds of sets of tin foil stickers, send them around the world promoting the game and your player group ? No ... hmm ok please feel free to post your opinion elsewhere !

Isn't this lobbying?
