Possible Fix for All Stutter Problems in ED?

Stutters can be caused by different things. OP 'cure' won't solve it for everyone. It seems issue is a bit way more complex than people imagine - most likely down to new shaders and how they are run on system. I will assume AMD CPU systems are suspect as those have different optimization codes than Intel ones.

Also I would cut down attacks on devs if I were you.

I see no sleep in your loop so how you come up with the 2 times per seconds? Is the wmic takeing 1 sec ?

Yeah I purposly left out sleep command, and 2 times per second is just a guess, it's not realy relevant.

I thought watchdog was an anti-cheat process, it could be a logreporter, true

Watchdog is crash dump collector, yeah, anti-cheat process is built into client.

Yeah try after the initial load stutter thingy, it's valuable data at this point

Ok I tried both methods, docked at Elrich City in Mercury (Big Circular port) With the batch file running I get severe stuttering. My machine is no slouch, glad it's working for some here, this makes thing worse on my rig unfortunately.

Can you do one more thing, can you open up your task manager, go into details, find EliteDangerous64.exe , and elevate its priority to High by hand?

And alt tab back to the game see if your game stutters before the process reverts itself?

If it does.... We are crossing the borders of pseudo-science here folks :D

Technicly also if it doesn't

Sure I'll try, although I have manually set the priority to high in the past, never seen any stutters.

Edit - Set to high & everything is normal, no stutters expect for what I've been seeing since 2.2 rolled out.

One more thing you could try is running just:

:loop
wmic process where name="EliteDangerous64.exe" CALL setpriority "high priority"
goto loop

I wonder if setting watchdog64.exe to low priority is what's causing you the extra stutter, which would also be interesting, it would mean that the process is more involved on your machine somehow o_O

Seems fine with the new batch file. I wouldn't say I am seeing a performance increase, it is defintely not stuttering like the previous file.

I... don't....

WHAT

From what I understand from researching on Google, WatchDog64.exe should be idle for 99,99% of the time, why would giving it low priority make it stutter your machine?

I will edit my original post and remove the line, for those whom the .BAT hasnt worked yet, please retry with just

:loop
wmic process where name="EliteDangerous64.exe" CALL setpriority "high priority"
goto loop

and post your results if you can be bothered

Ok I brought up the frame rate counter on the oculus client window. No batch file running 75 FPS (on the pad at Elrich City) with the file running 50 to 62fps

The fact that I get a solid FPS shows that my hardware is obviously more than up to the task, the stuttering I see on planets/stations has to be an optimization issue with the product itself. This 1080 runs DCS/Assetto flawlessly, ED is was also running great prior to 2.2

I seem to be having VR stutter issues as well around stations and planets. What is odd is that i didn't have them at all during the 2.2 beta or during 2.1

Ok, at least that does make sense, in a way that your processor simply doesn't like it, fair enough.

But what I'm interested in now is why would WatchDog64.exe with lowered priority make your machine stutter, when it's suppose to be an idle process?

I know it's a silly question, but just to eliminate all we can, you have an antivirus running, and your machine is virus-free right?

Yeah virus free, this machine is built solely for ED, any web browsing is done on a separate machine. Anti virus is disabled.

Have you tried crowdsource graphics cards, drivers and CPU versions to seek out potential source of this? My guess would be in this order a) problematic shaders misbehaving with GPU/driver combos b) CPU threading issues.

Since lowering priority for WatchDog64.exe has increased stutter on your machine, I wonder what would happened if you turned it off while gaming is running?

open your command promt (START-> type in cmd, open as administrator)

and while elite dangerous is running, type in

Taskkill /IM WatchDog64.exe /F

and hit enter, this will terminate the process, but I wonder what it will do to your game performance

Yes, as I mentioned in a previous topic, there is something up with this recent update, I am getting microstutters and generally poor performance in VR on planets and around stations. 2.1 was silky smooth.

I can only go on what I've seen, running the batch file caused severe stuttering whilst docked at a station, I killed the file and performance returned to normal.

I was also suffering with micro stutters. I was using Radeon settings to limit my framerate. I stopped using Radeon settings and started using the in game options for frame rate control, and that fixed it for me. I was also running fine before 2.2 hit.

Um, guys....

I did the above ^ thing for myself, I killed WatchDog64.exe, and now it's even smoother than it was o_o

Hi MassiveD

Thanks very much for your efforts. Unfortunately this didn't solve the micro stutter and jittering for me. There are countless threads on the forums about this as you know, and like you I have tried pretty much every suggestion and workaround. I think this effects the majority of players, not just a small group, because I see it in videos on Youtube and I even notice the stuttering when Frontier Dev streams on Twitch. It's so obvious.

The only temp solution I have ever found is running the game in full screen, alt-tabbing out for a couple of seconds and then back in. The game renders smoothly for a while, but as you know it doesn't last. I believe it might be a physics issue. Maybe it's just something Frontier can't fix without a massive rewrite.

Frustrating as hell, real immersion killer, and still no solution. :(

But for a moment your thread gave me hope, so thank you for that.

There is something seriously wrong with 2.2. Not seen in Beta. Massive frame rate drops near planets. Something rolled out with live that was not in Beta.
