10,000 LY's out, what do you use an SRV for?

Well I got so feed up with Engineers and the current state of game play in the bubble I decided to dust off my trusty ASP and head back out exploring for awhile.

The last time I was out exploring was pre SRV.

I bought two along and thought that I would ask current Explorers for ideas on what to do with them this far out.

I use mine primarily to rock hunt or explore stuff. I like to keep a nice pile of mats for jump boosts and a couple other things. For exploring, you need it to check out geysers, crash sites and other cool POIs. You can look at some of those things from a ship but to interact with them in any way, you need your srv.

edit: also fun for doing all those nutty off road antics like jumping and such. =)

I go in for extended trips into areas which are unreachable without jumponium. So I use my SRV almost exclusively for keeping my mats topped up. Good views are a bonus :D

Yep, mats for jumponium, AFMU, SRV refuel and hull, and other mats you might need back in the bubble.

Photo ops.

Variety. When jump-honk-jump gets dull.

Last time I was 10,000 LY out was just before 2.2 dropped. There were quite a few POIs, mainly crashed ships and nav beacons. Nav beacons everywhere that for some reason are attracted to planets like flys to .... honey.

Rumor has it some of this has been cut back in 2.2. But they have added other mysterious things that might be found.

Circumnavigating planets :)

That and finding jump juice and photo's. On the way *out* to Beagle there were indeed crashed ships n beacons aplenty [2.0]. Didn't see any on the way back.....although I didn't spend as much time planetside either having had my fill (point 1) [2.1/2.2]

Yeah, like Allitnil I prefer to explore systems that are “out of the way”, either high or low on the galactic plane, or out along the fringes of the galaxy. Systems that require FSD boosts to reach. So I use the SRV primarily for three reasons in deep space:

1. Collecting boost mats
2. Exploring geyser / fumerole fields or just general sightseeing
3. Joyriding and mountain climbing!!!!

There are days where I spend more time in the SRV than in the ship….

So I have found out! I decided to take a short expedition due north of Sol to the edge as far as I could go. Most of the systems were tagged by Allitnil. I appreciate you leaving some systems largely unscanned, but your successors did not.

Finally got as high up as I think I can get and hit an undiscovered system with a 69 LY jump, 1500 LY above Sol. Its a binary with HMC and possibly terraformable planets in systems orbiting both stars. I'm leaving one system unscanned except for one landable moon for photo-ops.

Well I may be the odd one here but I use it to summit mountains. There's something satisfying about seeing a particularly steep mountain offset against a starfield and then attempting to summit it. Learning how to rock-hop across chasms and then up difficult slopes on low-g worlds never gets old!

We should meet up at last on a small moon and race against each other around it - we talked about it back at Beagle Point 2 and I still think on it occasionally!

Definitely. I forgot to check radius but did you see the planet Colonia is on? Epic. So definitely gonna go for a drive there at some point.
I'm wondering how big Mitterand Hollow is too.....not been there yet

I've been dithering over whether to keep an SRV fitted at the moment - the thing that decided me is the prospect of finding something interesting a long way from civilisation and not being able to investigate.

Although I don't make extensive use of jump boosts and so don't generally need to top up materials for them, it's nice to know that the opportunity is there, and while (per the Macedonica Ruling of 3302) I have a mining laser fitted I believe that wouldn't be able to collect the rarest materials, so an SRV is still essential.

I am definitely going to be fitting a small mining laser after seeing it in action...however, it's intended purpose is going to be the same as my SRV...I have the SRV mainly for fun, and it looks like a hell of a lot of fun shooting things...without it shooting back :)

Mitterand Hollow? Now that is tempting! I have another Commander, Hated Nightfall, in the bubble so could make that.
