General / Off-Topic i sure wish the forum was like it was two to three years ago

Perhaps it's some kind of moral defect inherent to today's 'orrible gamer?

Or perhaps it's because of the crummy way the game's going?

I think time is a cruel mistress, back in the day we were all speculating about what was to come and what it would entail. Now we have some of the stuff that was coming we are coming to terms with the realisation that its not that 'amazing toy we saw in the window which we thought would be amazing' but its still a fun game just different. Its this ideal that the forums have changed into what we have now :)

Lay of Member Berries folks... :p

A few years ago ED was many things to many folks; the collective hopes and dreams of thousands of wannabe space pirates/traders/explorers/bountyhunters/miners/busdrivers. The forums were awash with speculation, hype, wishlists... and such environments are generally positive in nature.

Reality can never live up to the enormous expectations of such a vast melting-pot of froth.

Personally, ED disappointed me on many levels, and my expectations weren't astronomically high to begin with. (I've been a gamer for nearly forty years; I've picked up a few 'internal expectation management' coping mechanisms over the years, shall we say.) My list of gripes is too long to go into but all roads tend to lead back to RNG nonsense, rampant and conspicuous artificial difficulty, and no C&P.

I currently consider myself to be one of ED's detractors, and as such my posts herein do tend to be critical. I don't see ED becoming the game I hoped it would be and as such I'm now hoping that Star Citizen will deliver more than ED has, and depending on how that turns out I may well come back to ED. Who knows.

It has to do with the "masses", whether people like that term or not.
Hopes, dreams, nostalgia aside — the fact is that almost 3 years ago, the forums were much smaller to the point where almost everone knew each other, or least had a vague idea of what the other guy was like.

I've been on many forums since January 2000, both official and fan-forums and the pattern is obvious: Offical forums are always the worst when it reaches a certain critical mass for lack of a better term — because it's the #1 place where people of all personalities go.
(Whether that be blind fanboys, blind haters, trolls, someone venting steam over a trivial or serious parts of the game.)

Even fan forums suffer from the same problem once it gets so popular, that also becomes a place where everyone goes.

You know, when people talked about the game and not each other. People had ideas, hopes, dreams and were nice to one another (mostly) and there was literally a galaxy of possibilities.

Any chance we can get a "joined in 2014 or before" section? [big grin]

To be fair if the mods just shot most of the threads in the head (because this would be the most humane approach) there would be precious little discussion. Frustration based on how Frontier are progressing has become generic dissent and clogs up the forums and buries all manner of constructive posts.

People like to whine. And like their privilege to whine too. :)

Me? Bit over it all. Good luck getting traction on constructive queries and suggestions; it'll be buried faster than Jimmy Hoffa.

LOL So the reason behind this forum not being like it was 2-3 years ago is that there are more people on it? No, even if the forum size was ten people and remained ten till today, I am certain that there would have been something that FD would have changed with the game to upset one or all of those ten people. Nothing stays the same forever, nor should it. OPs "wish" should have stayed in his head and not found its way to this forum.

I'd love to see how many pages that would get...

Deal - but you have to read every post :D

That's fine. It's the kids skating on the sidewalk that ruin it for everyone [mad]

2 years ago if i was asked where ED would be in 2 years time (now)i would have said and expected fps and the planets ect(all the planets)...oh and real npc mission givers.
i thought the missions and the way text dictates everything was just a place holder.....but this is it isnt it gents?..this is what ED is always going to be.

i hope too that SC will pull it off as a backer....at least we are shown whats coming,we can see and get excited....ED it was all speculation and hope.

its simply not up to scratch with a 2016 onwards modern mechanic video game......too one dimensional.

While I share the OP's desire to see friendlier, or at least more cooperative, forums, I don't share the perception that they were ever significantly better than they are now.

There has always been a measure - to say the least - of hostility, of 'us-versus-them', of intolerance and mocking of other play styles, of trolling... And of course the constant circular arguments over whatever people perceived as the big issue of the day (mostly Open-Versus-Solo, since that's been an inevitable sticking point in this otherwise shared galaxy since day one).

I would like to see the forums improve - but going backwards isn't the right direction for that. Improvement in these terms is something we can choose to implement in the future (or, more likely, choose not to), not something we had in the past.

Deal - but you have to read every post :D

My eyes (and soul, probably) would spaghettify, but it would be funny watching everyone descend into madness in the endless maelstrom of circular argument. And as I read on, this would play in the background:
