So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

Hey, I'm new to all this but I'm on my way out there on a passenger mission and I'm intrigued

Just tell me... is the rift the squiggly white thing which is getting bigger as I head out towards the edge of the Galaxy

and

Is there a station out there anywhere because a repair/restock is gonna help a lot

Thanks

The 'squiggly white thing' will probably be a cluster of bright stars. The Rift is more a big, black yawning thing. If we knew where you were heading, we could probably be more specific.

No stations anywhere outside of the Bubble, except for Colonia.

I am heading for Eafots BP-1 D9-35 to "Children of Raxxla Staging Post" which sounded like a base to me?

I assume other "out there" stations such as Sothis and Maia are inside the bubble?

I'll post a pic of the squiggly white thing when I figure out how to do it!

I'm assuming his squiggly white thing is either the 2mass stars or the IC cluster.

And ya...you won't find a base within 8000 lyrs. The staging posts are just places for people to land and find each other in game.

You have to upload pics to something like Imgur, then link from there - can't upload to the forum any more.
If you're heading for EAFOTS then your white squiggle will be probably either NGC 7822 nebula or IC 1805 cluster.

The staging post is just a landable planet, which has exploration friendly materials - no actual base.

Ah thanks guys.

Bit disappointed about the wiggly line.

If there is a tourist beacon there I'd love to read what it says.

That is NGC 7822 and it will be a whole lot less disappointing closer up. If you have a jump range over 25LY it's easy to reach, else it might be tricky to find a way in (or require jumponium enough for the return trip). Some of the most remarkable systems and worlds in the game can be found therein - it's well worth the trip!

Don't about the squiggly white thing but that's a Borg cube coming at you ...

Next time someone mentions seeing NGC 7822 on the thread we should all act surprised. "I've never seen that before! What is it? Whoa! I think you've just solved the mystery!" LOL

OK I'm not gonna read 492 pages to find someone has already had the same thoughts on the wiggly line thing!

But...in general...I'm just discovering all the 'plot' stuff in Elite having played for a few months just doing the missions, trading, combat and whatnot.

I must say it's a bit intimidating, hard to avoid sounding like an ignoramus. If there's some kind of Elite for dummies chat room I'll go there

Given your apparent use of heatsinks, I suggest you ask for some tips about fuel scooping - you shouldn't be burning through them at the rate you seem to be.
What class scoop are you using? For exploration, go with at least a 5A, so you can minimize the time you spend in the corona.
Also, for long range trips, turn off any weapons you have, since they do nothing but add to your baseline heat.
The other thing I'd suggest, if you've engineered your ship, is to use Clean drives, not Dirty ones - you lose a little in performance, but they run much colder.

Don't worry - we're a friendly bunch and happy to help :)
NGC 7822 is, to the Rifters, like Hutton Orbital. Its a rite of passage.

This IS the Elite for Dummies chat room ;)

If you read the three or four original posts by LuckyLuke, you'll avoid asking the most obvious questions. We're pretty harmless in here, in general, honestly.

Ignore @Jaiotu - he's just cranky because his favorite star isn't in the game.

Just noticed my profile says mostly harmless but I'm a novice, dammit.

That's just your forum rank - not tied to your in-game rank.
It goes up when you post.
Anyone Dangerous or above has too much time on their hands.

Thanks for the heat sink advice, they are (obviously) there for emergencies and I haven't used them - they burned off!

Nice tip about the weapons. I have them but they're not switched off.

What is a clean drive and what is a dirty drive? Not heard the terms before. Also what do you mean by "engineer
' my ship?

My fuel scoop is a 3A - couldn't find a better one

I'm probably cluttering up your nice thread with this basic stuff now, sorry

If you find, after this trip, that you have the exploration bug, check out this forum:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php/117-Elite-Exploration

They'll have the answers to most of your questions and lots of useful tips.

Do you have the Horizons add-on?
I'm guessing you do since you appear to be heading to a planetside location. You've landed on planets before, right?
If you DON'T, then you may have a problem!

Engineers will improve your ship components - but again, you need the Horizons add-on.

Finally, sign up to the INARA website http://inara.cz - lots of useful information about trading, outfitting, etc.

No I don't have Horizons - I would, but they haven't done a mac version.

Are you saying I need Horizons to complete this mission? My passenger just says she wants to go there. I assumed it would be a case of finding out what to do when I arrive. It's a bloody long way to go if it's going to be futile when I get there!

Surely they wouldn't give a Horizons-only mission to everyone?

Thanks for the tips and links.
