[FGE] The dire diary of an insignificant Cmdr

Ships log, supplemental

You always tend to remember your firsts best. And after making the previous log entry and taking a few sips of hooch, I hit the trail again.

A few jumps in and I came across my first untagged Neutron star - at least as far as I can remember...definitely on this side of centre. This time I was very careful to avoid those pretty plumes.
There she is, mine. awww.

Next jump was to a Red Giant and shortly thereafter I jump into an untagged White Dwarf system

Now, here's the thing. The jump to the next system was running right by the White Dwarf. One should really go around, right? But the hooch said different..

What a rush!
ahem....Sober self - don't try this at home!

With less than 18,000 ly to Jaques, the first just keep on coming :)

After a brief foray into a nebula for some spectacular scenery
SDWBQ5E.png

whilst fiddling around with a drink bottle, I jumped blindly into a black hole system. Being distracted, it took a second or two to realise there was no star.....I was rudely pulled from supercruise. However, checking the scan I was greeted with knowledge that not only was this the first untagged blackhole, but it was partnered with a neutron and amy first ever Carbon star. The Carbon star was some 370k ls away but started to scan around 260k ls - wow that's big.

From 379ls away

Thanks Cmdr :)

I've lost more hull in the past 2 days than over the entire period I've been out (what is it, 9 months or something since the pancake incident?). I got to Beagle with 99% iirc (100% when viewed from the SRV...bug) and wiped it down to 98% during the equatorial run being a numpty.

so I've......taking heat damage charging FSD too close to a couple of stars, taking heat damage jumping through the exclusion of a white dwarf, taking damage from a neutron, face planted a black hole, face planted the planet I intended to land on for the toboggan run.......but she's still very shiney :D

After jumping into a Neutron system and arriving within the plume, it was a panicked waggling of the control stick to counter the incessant bobbing. As Cleopatra II cleared the vortex, we spun back to gaze upon our assailant - so picturesque...and deadly

Making good progress, I see. And you still manage to enjoy the scenery! Nice pictures :)

Thanks! Was really torn on that reddish rock with the ELW watching on......soooo thought about a circumnavigation...still am
But I *need* to get to Jaques to sell my data and get my decal :D ...and get back to the bubble to make the final DWE meet up.

Ships log

I think the charcoal filters are wearing out - either than or I've discovered a way to ferment recycled water.

I'm feeling a sensation of awe and of being smothered - the view out the window is quite literally FILLED with stars which is an utter contrast to a few weeks ago. I'm hearing rattles now from the FSD so each jump is getting tenser - after the last, ahem....incident, I'm loathe to tinker again Only 8,500ly left to Eol Prou RS-T d3-94 which is where I believe Jaques ended up. Won't be long now I guess.

I discovered a nice system to power down for the night. A twin ELW system. The 2nd one is just at the 10 o'clock position. How many more wonders await?

The closing 10,000 ly has been very generous in terms of discoveries. The latest is a pair of ELW's in relatively close proximity

This was soon followed by a wonderful ringed ELW

Of course, not all surprises are quite so pleasant. Agnaiz XV-U D3-3916 had me arriving *through* a star and deposited into a rather hot sandwich. Good job I decided to unwrap the AFMU earlier today which I used to repair most modules simply to see how it works....how glad am I? Very ;)

Another day of water worlds and the occasional earth like that demanded a detail scan. It's as if the universe really didn't want me to dock just yet.
But on we pushed. Cleo now looking rather rough around the edges it has to be said.....I guess that matches the interior which is in desperate need of some maintenance. Boiling coffee by flying too close to a star just isn't much fun anymore (yes, the first few times it was :D). I'm over the sparks. The worry of other breakdowns gaining traction in my head.

Bit still, the systems visited would offer interest. A ringed ammonia world as an example. Of course, with all the camp fire stories of strange noises and flashes, I coudn't help but check for signs of life

As we neared the destination, the nebula became ever more prominent...

The system was eerily quiet upon my approach. Evidently a lot of folks are busy with the local expansion efforts.
Eventually....finally...radio silence broken. "Welcome Cmdr, you're cleared for docking bay 22. Steady as she goes, enjoy your stay, first round is on us..."

The conversation went something like this;
'So what accommodation did you book Cmdr?'
"Oh, just the regular budget suite; Cleo's programmed that way whilst we work our way up to independence" which probably sounded more like "oar jeeze <hic>, juss the cheap one"
'Pardon me? Sir, after regaling us with your tales of wonderment, I insist on upgrading you to the Elite suites. You'll have a view over the stars as any great explorer should'
"Oh gosh, well that would be splendid. You do realise, of course, that one is not Elite qualified?" -> "<horsesy sounds> woss the catch? I nor leeth see"
'It's taken care of. As is the bill. Fellow explorers are always welcome here; please, enjoy'
"Well, if you insist, then I most grateful. Thankyou" -> "Thass oar shome. "

I woke with a start. Initially, the hangover wasn't too bad really. Until I rolled to undo the strap....and fell (fell!) onto the floor...no strap. Floor hard. Pain. Confusion.
It took a small while, but I remembered a) I was one Jaques station and b) he'd upgraded me to the Elite suites - where there's not only 'gravity' but it's close to the standard 1g. Scoundrel has a wicked sense of humour, I give him that ;)

****
A visit to the UC department was sooo slow. Sure, I know they have a heap of stuff to compare and make notes and all the other wonderful work they do, but I was nursing a bit of a hangover, a lot of gravity sickness and a whole heap of soft tissue damage from colliding with things. Being sore is not conducive to patience...hurry up already!

75 million credits. That's what I was paid. If I had liquidated all assets, I would have had maybe 30 million, probably less with commissions. And now, my worth was being quadrupled in one very satisfying interview. Sorry I was grouchy before ;)

Attention. Attention. All long range explorers, please report to Universal Cartographics immediately. Repeat. All long range explorers, please report to Universal Cartographics immediately.
Intriguing. Turns out there had been some developments nearer the city, and an urgent request had been issued for system details in three areas of space. The Conflux area was more or less on the way back from Jaques, so a small diversion would not be a problem. Count me in.

I almost ran into her. Dressed in unusually subdued tones, she blended somewhat into the general environment. By design I'm sure. She asked if I had heard of the 'Children of Raxxla', and gave me a quick run down when I admitted I had not....well, not really. Her request was simple - pass the data specifically through the UC at the Children of Raxxla's station. Evidently, there were concerns of underhanded tactics at play and a risk of data being 'lost' due to some ongoing legal battle. "Look, leave me out of the politics" I said, but I was happy to pass the data in to UC at the station requested.

He wasn't so lucky. Being second, and being rather obnoxious did nothing to help his cause. Which, like Passamé, was to hand in the data to a particular station - but this time for the Feds. His third mistake was offering a naval promotion in return.

The trip to The Conflux was uneventful. All haste was put into getting there, and since the ship had been repaired at Jaques, I could push it again without too much fear.
Oh....that reminds me. The apprentice at the shipyard outfitting in Jaques needs a good boot. He somehow managed to cross wire my navigation computer. With it being hooked into all the main systems, it took me a while to realise.

Easy fix though, swapped around two of the connectors and all was well with the world again. Jump after jump after jump.

Until....

This unregistered comms beacon gave off a code which I wrote down and handed over to the clever people at UC. They were most excited by the find.

Out of rep, so +1 vRep :)

Silly Feds, don't know how to treat a pilot ;). I hope that, despite the intoxication, you managed to enjoy some of your stay in the Elite suite :p.

A few thousand ly out and the subspace chatter mill started. "He's not dead" they whispered. I'd flown hard from Jaques so I knew I was well ahead of any trade and comms vessels. But the ftl chatter box cannot be out run.

250 ships lined the way into dock. All honking and flashing their lights in the excitement of the occassion. I thought the chaff 'waterfall' over the mail slot was a nice touch. The roar of the gathered crowd as I touched down threatened to crack the canopy and successfully cracked my composure. Tears streaming, I shut down Cleopatra II's drives and headed to the loading hatch.

Reality, was somewhat..... different. Radio silent ignore playing loud in my ears, I arrived with nary a 2nd glance to my adopted home port. The flight deck controller must have been new as she was quite curt in her instructions.

Disappointment turned to shock when I stepped into the IGER office. 'Sorry sir, we have no record of your signature cert'. "What? That's impossible. You encouraged me to join the Distant Worlds fleet" 'We did encourage pilots to join the fleet, but I'm afraid we have no record of you being amongst them'
"But....but...where's Celine? She'll remember me for sure" 'Celine sir?' "yes, Celine. The red head from Magellan. She helped complete the registration" 'We've no record of a Celine working here either'
"Unbelievable. I know....you can check UC records, yes?" <nods> "good, look up these systems that I handed in when I signed up"
'Interesting. They're first discovered by a Commander matching your name, but not your certificate I'm afraid' "What in blazes? How can that be. Hold on.....let me call them up in my ships 'puter.....huh.....I don't get it. They aren't accessible. But I have photo's. Heck, I'm sure I have a receipt somewhere" 'Not matching your certificate sir'
"This is like some kind of bad movie"
'I don't know what to say sir. You're welcome to sign on again with your current certificate' "thanks. But let me think on it. There has to be something....look, could you do me a favour and get my Cobra, the Kumgitme, brought over?" 'sure thing. And, I really am very sorry. If there was something I could do...' "I know. Don't worry, I'll figure it out"

The story at Serebrov Terminal was vastly different. Arriving with clenched....well everything on account of the 'warning, anarchy system', touch down was a no fuss affair. Having dug out the details I was given back at Jaques, I went to see the CoR. Delight at the data would be an incredible understatement. We all became instant best buddies :)

A few days later, the subspace chatter was alive with news of a Sidewinder pilot heading back from Beagle and due to arrive soon. My experience would not be repeated. A few of us flew out to Shapley in Sidewinders to meet Cmdr Jermus, the pilot I had met on his way *to*Beagle Pont, to escort him in. The number grew substantially by the time we reached port. No chaff, but the crowd roar was real enough :)
