Crimson Triumph

I already asked this in the introduction forum, but... That was probably stupid, because that's for Frontier's entire game lineup, right?

Anyway, can someone please tell me any strategies to killing that jerk Crimson Triumph? As I said, maybe I'm not very coordinated, but I've tried 30 times, and he keeps killing me.

Does anyone have any tips, or not? Personally, I do not think it is possible to kill this guy with a keyboard and mouse. I have tried 50 times. Power to systems, power to weapons... Nothing works. Five shots I'm dead, 20 shots to him and he's just fine. Getting frustrated. This is not fun. If the third solo mission is this difficult, I will not keep playing this game to find out what comes next.

I'm not the most experienced pilot here, but the best tips I can give are to get close to him fast, by boosting towards him as soon as he drops out of hyperspace. Then the main idea is to stay on his six. That keeps you out of his firing arc and him in yours. Also, if you're not using your lateral and vertical thrusters to keep on target, you might find that can help alot.

Thanks for your suggestions. I appreciate it. However, I cannot sem to stay on his tail at all. he's outmaneuvering me like crazy. I've tried to set the control options every way I can think of. The guy's literally flying rings around me.

I cannot aim, cannot shoot... If I'm lucky, though, I will hit Crimson Triumph 20 times and he lives, and then five shots at the front of my ship and I'm dead. Doesn't he have the same ship? All the rolling and pitching is giving me a headache and making me dizzy, too.

  • Give him a second and then heat sink/ chaff, usually the 1st thing he does is fire a missile...but only 1(?)

  • Stay on his 6, but be careful *not* to go into full reverse thruster as he'll probably lob enough shots to kill you(YMMV)

  • When he's in front of you(on his 6) and flying *straight* throttle boost and open fire

  • Keep practicing, and have fun:)

The heatsink dumps waste heat overboard, in the form of a consumable heat sink. It is one way to stay in silent running for longer, but I don't think they are especially useful unless you are using this feature.

Mac, are you talking about the single player mission, or did the Crimson Triumph interdict you in multiplayer? If it's single player, you should have the heat sink - if not, no matter what you do, the @#$@# will jump out doing his "Nooo, this can't be happening!" routine before you can finish him off.

Hi. Thanks for responding.

I'm doing the solo combat scenario Crimson Triumph. I'm doing the combat scenarios so I can learn how to play the game. Didn't have too much trouble with the little weasel in the second combat scenario, but Crimson Triumph is impossible.

I don't have a heat sink. When I press "V" to deploy it, it's not there, and nothing happens. And, I gather you're saying that, no matter what I do, you cannot beat this guy in the single player scenario? If so, how do you move on to the next one?

It will only work if you actually have them on your ship.

You have to beat the scenarios one by one to proceed. You cannot leap frog over them. Well, FD staff probably can be we can't. ;)

Maybe your mouse/keyboard setup isn't right, as this guy shouldn't give you that much trouble, also make sure you speed is in the blue if you get into a close fight with him, to maximise your turning circle.

nice vid

i am having the same probs as the OP

the fight for me is lost in the first pass - lose sight and not knowing where to turn

are you using TrackIR or just the manual cockpit view controls?

You should learn to use the radar. Its extremely helpful in any fight.

What I do if I'm not having success getting an enemy into my sights is i'll slam downward thrust, and hit reverse with flight assist OFF. This will throw your ship around and put a bit of distance between you and who your trying to track. Soon as you have him, put the forward thrust back on but dont stop the slide, and turn flight assist back on.

Also, i wouldnt get into a head banging match right out the gate, the AI fires with pin point accuracy, so try to get enough shots in that he'll turn away, but evade fire and use your boost to get around and past him. If you get his flank hold onto it by managing your throttle, including the distribution to your engines, and weapons too. Try not to let him get more than 1.5km out, because if he hits around 1800 thats more then enough space for him to come back around and lay the hurt on again.

Overall, once you know how to handle yourself, this fight is easy. I did it over and over until I had a 100% chance to win, then moved up to the recon wing.

That's weird - you should definitely have a heat sink - check your controls, to make sure the v key is still bound. I've had that happen occasionally - my keyboard becomes a bit useless, and I either have to quit and relaunch, or map everything @#$@# well again. (Known bug, I believe).

You can definitely beat him in single player - I did, and I'm pants, although it did take me a couple of attempts.

The "unbeatable" version of him is in the multiplayer. He will occasionally interdict you out of supercruise and attack you. It's happened to me twice, both times I gave better than I got, and as soon as he got below 20% hull he simply disappeared, after a lot of messages saying "No, no, this can't be... how is this happening?!?!" type stuff. (assume he jumped out, since there's currently no jump effect for ships other than your own).

nice video thanks... are you using a joystick ? I cannot get any of the mouse control configs to move as you do in the video. I've tried every mouse config, also tried this mission about 50 times.... something isn't right..

Mouse Configs are either (emulate joystick) somewhat like controlling a greased pig, or absolute (more accurate, but cannot rotate the ship fast enough in any turns, even when in blue zone) adjusting sensitivity seems to just make it uncontrollable either too fast to aim or too slow to turn...
The mouse config option that might just work, is missing from the available options (pitch / yaw)

is this scenario possible with mouse ? I've played a ton of flight /space games, (plus the original elite, and many other 6-axis games), and never had any such control issues...

side note:- crimson seems to be able to hit me while not flying towards me , neither does my dodging have any effect to evade his shots... does he have auto-target lasers by chance ? only thrusting forwards/backwards seems to give crimson some trouble.

heeeeelp please , very frustrated after dumping lots of cash on this, really want to love this, game looks gorgeous, so nostalgic, but control issues should not hamper game-play fun like this.... any tips greatly appreciated.

Yep. Dead easy this one:
Run away.

As soon as your screen does the white flash thing as you come back in from supercruise, it'll still be shaking around all over the place, whilst this is going on ramp your speed to max and change your power pips to all engines. don't bother getting your weapons out.
By this time the shaking should have stopped. When you're still being shaken about, if you can, try and face in the direction of the shooting stars going past you as that will allow you to keep most of your speed.
When the shaking stops you should be at max speed and able to see the target on the scanner. Turn your ship away from them.
Get them behind you and then hit the boost button. They should be on the edge of the scanner and not right behind you. If they're right behind you you're toast.
When you can, again hit the boost button. Then activate supercruise again. You might be able to boost one more time during the countdown.

It doesn't matter who they are. It could be pirates, the Feds, police, or whatever. Doesn't matter. Just get the hell out of there.

When you've got some decent lasers and can handle your ship you can stop and play with them. But if you do make sure they fire and hit you first or you will get a bounty and the station will do the Laser-Laser Boom-Boom dance on your hull.
