So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

Go with it; trust your instincts :)

I will raise the anchor tonight as well and set course for the Formidine. Just need to make way to the bubble first from Sacaqawea and get in a ship that actually jumps somewhere.

I'm out there now.

I'm thinking i'll just play the big bad scary thing and attack anyone who crosses my path in this 1,125,000,000 cubic ly vaguely constrained expanse of space (1500x1500x500 as a estimation of the rift)

Be afraid.

Just don't attack me in my little ole Asp :p ;), haven't quite left the rift yet.
.
Btw, do we have a date for when 2.2.0.3 goes live?

Sounds good! Can not wait for it :)

44ly if i'm on fumes. I'm not stripped for max jump range. I dont like exploring far away from the bubble without the ability to take down ships. And it's always good to have a full mining rig and scanning modules. So you will be followed relentlessly by my wake scanner.

This is my gopher conda. not my combat conda that i took to jaques and beagle point and sag a. That had a jump range of 25ly if empty.

I'm in that vicinity, if I ever play again, but as I'm down to 34Ly, I'm guessing I'm quite a bit more heavily armed than you. [yesnod]:D

Tin foil hats to the max but, having read the text of Salome this morning here are some choice quotes.

You would fancy she was looking for dead things.

how I loathe the Romans ! They are rough and common, and they give themselves the airs of noble lords

How black it is, down there ! It must be terrible to be in so black a pit ! It is like a tomb.

It is his eyes above all that are terrible. They are like black holes burned by torches in a Tyrian tapestry. They are like black caverns where dragons dwell. They are like the black caverns of Egypt in which the dragons make their lairs. They are like black lakes troubled by fantastic moons.

Get thee to the desert and seek out the Son of Man

Oh yes, I see it well, and the stars are falling like ripe figs, are they not? And the sun is becoming black like sackcloth of hair, and the kings of the earth are afraid.

The concept of fear, Herod's fear of Jochanaan is the core of the strauss work and there are plentiful references, as above, to spacey-type things, I have read that the moon is almost a central character in the work, as it is in reclamation.

Here's my take. Whats in the rift is fear, but it is something salome must face to exact her revenge on ... on something? In fact, no salome does not face Jochannan in the pit, she has someone do it for her, the executioner...

What do we get if we map the characters from Reclamation onto the characters from Salome?

Rosy nipples, specifically Jessica Chastain's as Salome and Al Pacino as Herod in Wilde's http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3112900.
A torrentialy good watch for a play on film.

Just the rosy bit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xtxm3nVv-7U

hah. almost played that while on my work laptop while at work. decided to opt for caution since salome's dance (should if it's done accurately) quickly involves lots of nudity and our puritanical US culture makes such things not safe for work.

Not sure if that video includes it since it's on youtube but ...will have to wait until i'm home :)

1950's Rita Hayworth version for you then https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zK2ku2l77E

more entertaining in some ways.

Strange we haven't been here already.

For what it is worth:

The historical Salome has been identified alternately as Herod's daughter, granddaughter, step daughter or even his niece. The poor girl's paternity is very much in question.

Poor Kahina, with her dark hair, has the same problem. Rumors abound about her not being Algreb Loren's biological daughter have been whispered in the Imperial court, iirc.

Her sister was not a natural blonde either and had submitted to the genetic treatment demanded by her family. I wouldn't be surprised to find none of the Loren's were natural blondes. The "problem" would be her arrogant refusal to do her familial duty as proscribed by Algreb. She took pleasure in annoying him and her sister with her continuous sark while following all outward appearance of good form in such a manner they could have no cause to remark but would definitely get the message. Naturally rumors would follow from her not towing the line while towing the line. Courtly aggression by necessity must be passive.

The other version was better. Even if the dance is kind of ridiculous looking.

Any research leading to nudity that can be blamed on academia is good research I can get behind.

I don't think Drew got anything from the 1950 version even subconsciously. In it Salome is dancing to distract Herod while her boyfriend a Roman Captain and good Christian before there were Christians attempts and fails to help John the Baptist escape Herod's dungeon and it's all on her evil mother. Salome does remove some of those Sumerian adornments in order but not all seven.

I wonder how much of any of it is historical. I think it's noted that Herod(not the great but the greats grandson) died from an infection of worms so this story was made up to say God got him, not the under-cooked pork chop. It's a health and safety story really.

I'm sure all of the Lorens (excluding Kahina) were slaves to Imperial Fashion and it wouldn't shock me in the least to discover that none of them were naturally blonde. That would never put a stop to spreading a little gossip. As American President Theodore Roosevelt's daughter Alice was quoted as saying:

quote-if-you-haven-t-got-anything-nice-to-say-about-anybody-come-sit-next-to-me-alice-roosevelt-longworth-17-86-74.jpg

In fact, I think Alice would have made a wonderful member of the Empire's upper class. A very, very interesting individual if ever there was one.

I missed that. Is it in the book or details from another source?

it also seems unlikely that imperial upper class wouldn't custom design their children... making surprise hair colors a non-issue.

But I didn't write that story.

I think the crux of the issue is that we're not sure if FD implemented Drew's vision or if they have come up with their own thing that's loosely related to what was originally written in Reclamation.

Lets assume they did. From the description of the old woman, who we need to assume isn't completely regurgitating fabricated info from her mind manipulation, we should be looking for something so fantastical that nobody would believe you if you came back to the bubble and tried to tell people. Protected by something so dangerous that she's basically the only one who has witnessed it and survived despite any previous exploration in the area.

Missing stars wouldn't do that.

Plus why leave her alive? I think that's the biggest question aside from the main mystery of what it is we're looking for. Why not kill her and tie up a loose end like they have assumingly done to countless others who happened to get too close? Seems very odd to make an exception here. Who is she really that she is left to potentially cause more trouble?

Really good observations and questions here.
.
There are two lines of thought that occur to explain the old lady's position:
a) she was actually once a part of a group involved in covering up events related to alien activites and they don't kill each other, just erase their memories when they retire.
b) she had connections that would have made it inconvenient to have her eliminated, or it was otherwise considered sufficient to have her memories erased and to leave her sufficiently mixed-up, so that she would have no credibility.
In both cases there is still the question, that has been asked here before, of why Salome took her seriously enough to cross-check what she learned from her. To me, Salome's actions suggest that this old lady is someone of former renown, to the point where what she says should not be ignored, no matter how mixed-up her memories might be. This leads me to ask: what was she renowned for and what did she do wrong when she found 'it', for her message to be kept out of the public domain, yet still maybe stored somewhere in the depths of Fed/Imperial data vaults?

No.

We should just make our own solution to the mystery.

I'm in the eafots sector. I'm saying the mystery was completely fabricated by this old woman.

She was a high level empire intelligence agent. Forced into retirement due to old age, she, in her increasingly lucid fantasies brought on by dementia, she created this entire imaginary threat and wandered the systems in the bubble telling any pilots who would listen her fantastical tale ... Now completely believing it real... The dementia having progressed to the point of needing constant hospital care.

Not a bad theory at all. Repped, Commander.

Cheers,

Drew.
