General / Off-Topic Assange confirms Russia NOT involved in the DNC leak

should also point out the intelligence briefers are saying the briefing was always scheduled for Friday, so possible Trump misread his appointment diary.

alternatively it could be a distraction from the fact that somebody did promise to tell everyone what they know about hacking on "Tuesday or Wednesday"....Donald trump....

remember that Russia is very happy to lie through it's teeth.

"no Russian soldiers in eastern Ukraine, they are all local militias....."

"MH17 was downed by a Ukrainian ground attack plane trying to shoot down Putin and not a BUK launcher from Russia"

Yeah, and if they ready and willing to do these sort of things, than its not too far fetched to assume they are going to lie straight to your face. Assalange included.

1. has Clinton called for his extradition? iirc there is no extradition request by the states and all the calls for his prosecution have come from the right, for example Sarah Palin, but nobody in an actual position to actually get an extradition order.

Clinton, as sec. of state, has been the one responsible for arranging bringing him to the USA to be possibly arraigned.

He also has a long running grudge against Clinton.

2. The US has no direct influence on him being in the embassy. he is hiding there after jumping bail in the UK to avoid extradition to Sweden on suspicion of sexual assault. his has stated that the Swedish extradition is ruse to extradite him to the US. if the US were to officially say they weren't going to extradite him, he would have no reason to continue hiding in the embassy and would have to face the music for first the accusations in Sweden (which he may or may not be guilty of) and for jumping bail and contempt of court in the UK (which he clearly is guilty of).

Not directly, but his big fear is that the UK will send him off to Sweden, then regardless of what happens there he'll be sent to the USA. Without that he would be less likely to be hiding in that embassy.

Even putting his feud with Clinton aside, she is far less likely to go easy on him than Trump.

There's no reason for Assange to lie, unless he is involved in some elaborate huge plot by the Russians over years of work to get a reputation as a trusted whistleblower. All to get Trump elected! Really? The biggest pro American ever to walk this Earth.

The FBI, or CIA or whatever agency responsible for the investigation should easily be able to show some evidence for their allegations. Anything. They only published a vague report with zero evidence in it, before deporting the Russian diplomats and their families in the middle of Christmas holidays.

Out of curiosity, what would you consider proof of hacking? And how would you imagine intelligence agencies sharing that with you?

So, what does Assange know about Podesta's Email account? *)

They can't stop bragging, can they?
If you ever thought Movie Villains are ridiculous, because they can't help themselves and don't manage not to brag about their world domination plans in front of the hero, you just gotta watch this entire plot play out. It's ROFL worthy.

*) The idea that is was an "inside" job is ridiculous, if you know anything about the internal workings of ... anything. A single compromised mail account is the proof that is was not an inside job and only one (albeit important) account hacked is proof that DNC knows their stuff.

They need to send me a personal email of IP logs tracing back to Vlad's PC ;)

How bout they publish something that will convince people knowledgeable in this field that there is evidence for Russian gov involvement. So far they are not impressed..

fair enough, it looks like the state dept was looking into whether there was enough to charge him and get an extradition as far back as 2010.

as of 2016 (afaik) no charge or request has been made.

maybe they have enough but are "keeping their powder dry" or maybe they don't have anything.

this is the bit I don't get.

let's assume that the US did have a, maybe secret, extradition order for JA.

he was in the UK, a country with a track record of being friendly to the US and with a specific extradition agreement with the US that makes it easier to extradite to the US.

why the "mousetrap" like scheme of faking a accusation, getting the Swedes to request extradition from the UK to then whip back the curtain and say "oh look, we're going to forget about the accusation and ship him to the US".

would it not be far simpler to just get an arrest warrant issued then an arrest and extradite request direct to the UK to arrest and extradite him direct from there?

one scenario requires a vast, complex and illegal (false claims) operation spanning multiple legal jurisdictions in order to capture someone who could have ben captured in a simpler manner (with no illegality required) using a simple extradition from the UK request.

the other one is that JA does indeed have a case to answer in Sweden and the whole "they're out to get me" thing is to avoid facing charges in Sweden.

the ironic thing is he has effectively imprisoned himself in conditions in some respects worse than if he had been convicted and jailed.

yes!!

"Leaps in logic" .. righty. If 1+x=2, x= ? .. don't jump to conclusions http://www.welivesecurity.com/2016/...in-attacks-ukrainian-electric-power-industry/
Well, he's right about politicizing those things instead of policy making being bad... but what the freck is he doing on Fox News then? He's like some dude slaughtering a pig in public while holding a speech about veganism being the way to go.
How much does he charge an hour for his "security advice"?

And Trump just proves that he's utterly clueless... "Courier as the safest way to get something transmitted" .. "I don't care what 'they' say, no computer is safe" ... HA HA HA ... [wacky] I'm sure the gold sharpie stock got up 20% after that.

'They' say stop twittering you buffoon.

Really? Fox is not impressed? Well, that surprises me, usually they are the epitome of unbiased reporting and indepth tech knowledge.

But seriously, what would be 'proof' to you? In a way that:

1) They can release it without jeoparidizing anything
2) They cannot be accused of just making a text document up.

Because face it, people who call them liars now will call them liars when they show you some text file too. So if you dont take their word now, when will you? Or do you expect them to open the doors and allow every interested American to browse their computers? And then, couldnt it still be fake evidence?

All this 'there is no evidence' is . Either you believe them on their word or you believe Putin on his word. Thats the choice you have to make. Neither is very appealing, but one is slightly less absurd than the other.

so had a look at the report.

what they say is that two "actors" previously linked to Russian intelligence services sent spearphishing emails to multiple people in "a political party" (the DNC).

given many emails were sent out I assume they have many copies of those emails to different people.

those emails (from press reports) were masquerading as emails from Gmail admin requesting the user reset their password.

somebody (Podesta) clicked the link and was taken to a fake "gmail" page where they entered their password. presumably the Intelligence services can trace where that link was hosted, and they have concluded it was hosted on servers previously linked to the Russian intelligence services.

It all comes down to looking at the methods (both the actual malware and the techniques) used and the infrastructure (servers, IP addresses, domains etc) used and matching them with the methods and infrastructure used in previous known attacks.

Now I don't have the expertise to do the last bit, but the method seems sound..

The expert on Fox did not convince me. The report did not seem to muddle up the various "classes" as he called them.

He mentioned he was previously a detective, so he should know if you get to crime scene and the crime share multiple similarities with a criminal's previous crimes (entry via open window, strangled with belt, victim posed in bed, lock of hair taken etc) it is not unreasonable to point the fingure at the same person.....

It could be either, but I think it is very likely they have a sealed indictment somewhere.

If Assange landed in JFK international today he'd almost certainly be nicked, taken off to a cop shop, held until the Feds showed up, and then rubber-trunchioned until he sang like a canary.

this is the bit I don't get.

the ironic thing is he has effectively imprisoned himself in conditions in some respects worse than if he had been convicted and jailed.

Maybe it has something to do with the case of Garry McKinnon and Richard O'Dwyer. The events surrounding McKinnons highly public court battle in particular would have made matters extremely difficult for anyone attempting to extradite someone to the USA, from the UK, on the basis of electronic hacking or cyber crime. It may simply be that Assange, seeing those other cases at the time, felt far more secure in the UK.

It could also be that this is a smoke-screen and he really is terrified of facing charges of sexual assault in Sweden. Nobody is leaking information about him.

Apparently under EU law people may not be extradited to the USA for political reasons, or if they're likely to face the death penalty. Leaking of classified information counts as a political reason, and is insufficient grounds for extradition. Also, Sweden has its own extradition treaty with the USA, which basically states that for any citizen to face extradition to the USA it has to be for a crime which has an equivalent crime in Sweden.

But you're right though. It's not clear to me why it would be harder to extradite from the UK than it would be from Sweden.

When you type extradition so many times it starts to look weird.

It all comes down to looking at the methods (both the actual malware and the techniques) used and the infrastructure (servers, IP addresses, domains etc) used and matching them with the methods and infrastructure used in previous known attacks.

It's funny enough the same methods and tools used against Ukrainian infrastructure some 2 years ago (Ukraine? Nothing to do with Russia .. no no) - and not "commonly used" across the net (there's always imposters, but you should be able to rule that out).

And the blatant denial of Assange and Trump just make it worse. "we don't know anything, but we know that 'without the shadow of a doubt'".
Is that so?

Oh, more fun:
Politically, the Russian government’s employment of the internet for propaganda purposes has been criticized. Since
2013, the Internet “Issledovania” has been working to create government support on social media; antigovernmental
sentiments found online have been attacked and removed. Such internet censorship in the country is
based on the Russian Internet Restriction Bill which was implemented in September 2012. While the bill was
originally intended to block sites dealing with drugs, child pornography, and suicide, it has been used to prevent
anti-governmental activities.
The extent of this internet restriction is hard to estimate.

Originally intended for good use, huh?

In addition if the protection is weak but there its still a crime, to steal it, and also a crime to get it, and publish like assalange did. Even if he is falsely accused with sexual assault? Now he is rightfully accused because of this.

Right. :) This called slippery slope fallacy.

Clueless, but he is halfway right. It's better to not make any data accessible, what's not necessary, but this not makes the attacker deeds acceptable. Crime is a crime even if there is no lock, and the password is crappy. Is that simple.
If he trying getting to the point, and try to say? You must be more careful? Than he is right. But otherwise? This is just disgusting.

But I'm interested how the present morons feel if someone stealing his account and only says hey you deserved it your protection was a piece of trash!
EDIT; I guess there is no need to check right? We know the answer without it. They will be very very upset, and displeased. and with good reason. So much about this, and their whole idiotic arguments, Trumph included.

Lesson? Think before you open your yapper!

that's called 'finlandization' for historical reasons ;-)

A dark period in our post war history, with El Presidente Kekkonen who thought he was indispensable, and the only person who could dance with the Soviet Bear. You're not using the term quite right however.

well, eu seemed to have no problem supporting the extreme right uprising in ukraine. one could as well be glad there's a bear around willing to stop fascism to bloom in or near europe, even if only for spurious reasons and self-interest. of course war is never the solution, but war has already started the moment one power helps flipping a legitimate regime in a foreign country, specifically a country in the direct sphere of influence of another power. what else would you expect?

What "extreme right" is this again, or are we going with the RT version of events?

"flipping a legitimate government"? Seriously? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Ukrainian_revolution

Not to mention you also seem to want to respect Russia having a "sphere of influence". Eff that. Does it mean the UK should be free to annex the Republic of Ireland? It's definitely in their historical sphere of influence.

You sure seem to love the Russian world view. Zero sum games all the way, and nihilistic disregard for the truth and human rights.

Today the American intelligence agencies have an audition in front of the congress to bring their "proofs"
