Elite / Frontier Can't launch from space station

If you would like to allow private emails briefly, I could email and attach a copy of my commander for you to try. That would eliminate one or the other.
Done. I use DOSBox, though, so I won't be able to replicate the problem if it's VDMS specific.

My next move is to change ships to see if that works. Problem there is finding a half decent replacement.
Don't ask me, I'm an Asp guy myself ;) (Boa was good, though, but only in FFE where it had turrets fixed).

Do ypu know where I can download the GLFFE commander file editor?
Alas, no idea.

Thanks for the info Steve, but that prog looks for JJFFE files not GLFFE so unfortunately no go.
I've got the trainer program (B.U.F.F.E.T.) running with glFFE no problem. As far as I can remember, and looking at the read-me file that comes with the download, as long as you haven't already got FFE running when you launch the trainer, it will ask you which exe you want to use.

Bwuh? Commander files are interchangeable between GLFFE and JJFFE.
Correct, but BUFFET doesn't look for Commander files. It runs in the background while FFE is running and allows you to change parameters on the fly. Then you can save your Commander with all the new attributes :)

Ahh... now I understand. One must read the readme files must'nt one. Durrr
Thanks Steve, I shall look at that tomorrow.

Oh dear...
I have run BUFFET which then loaded glffe. OK so far. Next I loaded a commander file. I assume that BUFFET should reflect the details of the loaded commander and changing these details in BUFFET should change my on screen commander... I must be doing something wrong as the two do not match and neither affects the other. Yes BUFFET runs glffe but the two seem independent.

addendum to previous. When I look at BUFFET.CFG with notepad, line 3, 'The cheat offset', is a number larger than item 2 'The size of the exe'. I think this may mean that BUFFET is modifying details in another part of memory, possibly another program! If I knew the correct value for line 3 to match glffe I could change it an hopefully get a result. I have tried deleting BUFFET.CFG and a restart of BUFFET.EXE but still no go.
My BUFFET.CFG shows line 2 as 2590720 and line 3 as 29760540, and that is over 29meg!!!

It was buffet i used.

As you are only competent, though, i really suggest starting from scratch. I mean, it only takes one evening to get to competent, and you will then be able to follow the storyline as it is meant to be experienced.

I was able to replicate the problem. The ship doesn't
launch or dock properly. In both cases it starts to grind against
dock's walls, falls out of sync with station's rotation and is
eventually destroyed.
Good news is that the problem isn't caused by your version of
frontier or your save, Grimble - I was able to replicate the issue using one
of my own saves under GLFrontier as well.
Bad news is that the designers of Anaconda were bunch of morons.
The ship is simply too wide to dock/launch properly with/from
standard orbital docks.

There are three solutions to this problem:

1. Ditch this bucket of bolts and buy a real ship, either some nice
freighter like Boa or Panther, or some good fighter/multitask craft
like Asp, Cobra Mk. III or Viper DC. Remember that bottom turret is
broken in Boa in FE2, though.

2. Avoid orbital stations like plague.

3. Buy a lot of shieldgens and use stardreamer when launching/docking
to prevent hull/equipment/cargo damage.

Heh - something that I hope will be addressed in E4 with a 'docking craft' solution because the bigger ships are simply too rediculously huge compared to a small orbital station. I'm going to have a go at creating a scaling chart I think :)

Many thanks DraQ
At least I know the problem and I can hype out of the dock if I need to.
Your suggestion of starting over 'turwhitt' ... hmmm. It took me months to get there last time and I have'nt played for the best part of 20 years since. Maybe I should start again as I am probably like a newby again - but one evening's play to get to competent, corporal and 2000000 credits, I don't think I could achieve any of those in a week or even a month!

Sound libellous to me ;)
The ship isn't much better in FFE either; it seems to fit into all the orbital stations including the little trading posts, but the designers messed up the rear view. Doesn't hold a candle to a Panther, I'm afraid.

You might be surprised.
I got easily that far in an evening (i do play long sessions though!) and i'd consider myself far from uber at any game.

Also, it's a lot of fun as it looks loads nicer in high rez, and i actually tried to follow the storyline this time, rather than just heading straight for the nearest military base.

The time it will take to get from harmless to competent is miniscule compared to the time it will take you to get from competent to elite.

I think that there should be some ships that just can't dock in a station. The Anaconda and Boa were always massive ships in my mind but after going over the sizes from the manual there really isn't a huge difference. None of the ships are truely dwarfed. I have completed a chart based on the old school measurements but I'm going to have another go taking into account the masses listed in FFE.

It's interesting stuff

Right. That does it. I'm starting over, I like the graphics and other stuff in glffe and sound dose'nt work on my FE2 Dos copy anyway... Does this mean that I won't need to keep digging out the manual for those annoying police fraud checks also? I shall definately avoid buying an Anaconda in the future. I think that is pretty smart programming to hide a 'secret' problem like this in the program, it has kept us all guessing for a while but I am surprised there was no warning,,, or did I miss that?

Yes there's no copy protection.
You are expected to pay frontier £5 after 2 weeks of play if you want to continue though.
Bargain if you ask me.

Huh... not a very good start! Two jumps, 200 creds, some weird messages about having a broken light and I get chucked out of the game for stealing my space ship. @!-#
Life is going to be tough. I wish I had listened to my mother when I was young...
