Large Pad ships should be able to access outposts...for missions.

Should ships that require a large landing pad be allowed to access outposts to use only the mission

Voted no because I'd prefer to see small carrier ships that allow you to dock at outposts and transfer small amounts of cargo and passengers (in a time consuming process, which allows pirates to interfere).

Large ships access to outposts? NO! of course not!
But! it would be fine, if we can take a sidewinder into the fighter bay and use him as small outpost vessel :D MAKE IT HAPPEN FD!!

There's another thread about this here - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/316967-Small-Pad-Only-Outposts-Installations which I found interesting. I like the idea of giving small ships a reason to be, but at the same time would like some form of umbilical or shuttle services for large ships.

I think part of the large ship issue is, as noted, the more they become able to do everything the more they appear to be the 'goal' of the game, which encourages people to grind (as in undertake gameplay they don't want to do) to get them. Making a bit of a choice about the ship adds to my game interest.

I think a bit more thought is needed around this. I find it incomprehensible that an anaconda or a T9 can be effective smuggling ships. They are pretty obvious beasts and should be instant targets for ship scans (maybe reduced with high enough local faction rank). Meanwhile the little nippy eagle of sidey should be of less interest to the rozzers. Maybe a shuttle would only function if the ship concerned was scanned first (would you just dock with an unknown battleconda?) and remote access to the mission board would include a 'data security scan' from time to time or something.

There is a point to this. If large ships are to be allowed to do the same missions as the small ships then there needs to be a quid-pro-quo to keep interest in small ships. All the ships should have a place in the game, which would be proportionately more likelihood of getting caught on illicit cargo/data missions.

IF they did this then that really would mean the anaconda would be THE master of all in the game... the only thing giving ships like the python a purpose once you are wealthy other than flying for fun, is the fact it has unique access to docking at smaller stations.

So i voted no.

now that said, if we could park up in space and then launch an SLF to fly to the outpost that would be cool (which would then give the OP half of what he wants as data and stuff could still be taken, but would leave our big ship exposed in space, which would be risky)......

maybe we could have new "large" outposts which had large pads also or some form of loading and unloading, but the point is, imo its important to have some outposts which only smaller ships can access (I think FD should go 1 step further and have TINY outposts with only small pads, but with emergency refuelling hoses - which charge a lot to use.)

Exactly! This needs to happen OR the SLFs need to be able to dock and store data. A SRV can store data but a SLF cant? Makes no sense. FD is designing the game and changing lore specifically to minimize the use of Sideys and SLFs in fighter bays. Not cool.

I get that it seems odd that in space the larger ships just simply cannot interact with outposts. I still remember repeatedly requesting docking permission at an Outpost in my T7 and not understanding why I was being denied.

However, in game terms I think the separation is important. You mention in your post that you have played the game a lot, but have to get back into a Python to do some stuff because of the medium/small pads at outposts. I think if outposts took large ships, the range of ships you use would decrease.

So I voted no.

i would love it, if they had some shuttle ... or could use a fighter to do so. would allow them access, but would restrict them not to do cargo missions.

without any restriction, i'd have to vote: No. outpost access is something, which makes small and medium ships usefull, even if you own large/huge ships. at least if you are playing the BGS.

Yeah a shuttle is what we need, it will still need more work to use a big ship and that do not need to change.

I can see no reason why with EVA a large ship couldn't hover next to any station or land on a patch of ground next to a planetary outpost and access basic services and be loaded/unloaded. Some orbital outposts even seem to have open area pads for this to happen. So in principle I would vote yes for basic services, no shipyard, outfitting etc.

But in game terms I would vote no as it should only be done once EVA is available to us as pilots and there are a lot of more important things to do before that in my opinion

If you allow big ships to access small outposts. That further nerfs the smaller ships. Having a large ship has to have disadvantages, all things must be balanced.

I mean i pilot an anaconda and it is a bit of a pain not being able to visit smaller outposts, but thats life. Being able to do everything in one ship would make others completely redundant apart from being a 'stepping stone'.

Personally I'd like to see more types of outposts. From tiny ones that only have a single small pad all the way up to huge ones that can have multiple large pads. I'd also like to see outposts change and grow over time -adding more facilities, more pads, habitation rings, greenhouses etc or falling into disrepair, as the economy grows and the bgs changes.

totally agree with this.. complete with repair people on the surface (thinking of red dwarf intro ;) )

ED looks beautiful, but it is so static, and these kind of things you list would add a lot of life into the game

But even with access to outpost, the smaller ships don't really have any role to play in this game other than being a ladder to bigger ships.
If I have a Python today (access to outposts) what use will I ever have of an Eagle?
Now If I had a crew and some off them would escort me in an Eagle, that would be a purpose for it.
That's just an example to illustrate that the lack of use for smaller ships in this game has little to do with larger ships being able to access outposts or not.
Now, personally access for large ships: yes, landing pads: no

Guys, these should all be 'yes' votes. As I stated in the OP and several times throughout the thread, the poll is about "Should ships that require a large landing pad be allowed to access outposts...to access the mission board only."

I don't care how they do it, umbilical/SLF/Sidey/shuttle/taxi/module/whatever. As I said, that could be the drawback to gaining access. I don't get that it would be that difficult, as we already have stations where certain services are "unavailable" under certain circumstances (states/UA/gov't). They could just "unavailable" the outfitting/commodity sections for large pad ships if implementing taxi's is too hard/time consuming for FD.

I have also said that I already use other smaller ships. This change would not alter that. So to me, the idea that this would somehow render smaller ships unused is wrong.

No.

Pros and cons keep the game diverse.

Right, so having it that a large pad ship needs the con of a module/SLF/taxi for the pro of some access to outposts keeps the game diverse. Thank you for your support.

Having a little think I can see no reason why some planetary outposts shouldn't have large pads. If you can land a large ship right next to one why can't they build something you can build to land on in a station. It should depend on size and economy though as that outpost paying over the odds for goods to transported out would eventually hit the point where a costs/benefit analysis would justify the costs for a bigger pad.

It should be part of ongoing development of sites and would be inevitable where multiple players are running from them and creating a boom

Since you think that. Why start a poll?
Um. I meant that the guys I quoted were saying things that appear to agree with the idea presented in OP, but voted no.

I did not mean everyone that votes should vote yes.

The poll itself was just a fun add-on. After all, polls only tell you what is popular, not what is right.

I'd like to use a SLF to dock at a outpost.

Yeah, small cargo shuttle SLFs that you could use to transfer cargo in small batches to station storage, and then you could finish the mission when all have been delivered.

And THAT is why it is failed. lol What is popular is cmdrs using small and medium ships. NOT large ones, especially not the big 3. You are basically pouring salt into an open wound. It is not easy ranking up to get these large ships or getting the credits to purchase them AND outfit them. Those of us with the big 3 would jump at ANY chance to access outposts via docking with them or accessing the mission board without docking. So the vote for large ship owners would be "yes" and the vote for large ship haters would be "no"

I voted No.

That's the trade-off you make when you buy a large ship.
