CQC Have FD given up on CQC?

I hope not, I enjoy CQC when I get to play it. Flying the fighters is fun, the arenas are fun, the aspect of targeting limited by line of sight is well executed.

Of course, I'm on XB1, so it's even harder to get a game there.

Every time I try I'll sit in the queue for 5-10 minutes... and then give up. It used to jump right into a game when it first came out and I had a lot of fun in CQC!

I watched a recent Livestream about 1 or 2 weeks ago where it was suddenly decided that instead of playing CQC as promoted, they would do more 2.3 Beta stuff. I asked a question in the chat about CQC in general and its future, and the response in the stream was along the lines of "we are not working on CQC just now."

I guess this could be interpreted as "we have 2.3 to get ready just now" or "we were planning CQC with the devs tonight but we're doing something else instead" or even, well, "CQC is not being worked on as there are better things to do." That latter inference is a little unsettling, especially as lots of people here have made CQC their own and gleaned a lot of enjoyment and skill from it. The last thing I want is for CQC to be completely scrapped, especially as some of us are working on our CQC Elite ranking.

The more I play CQC, the more obvious it is that FD have only themselves to blame for its lack of success. The match maker simply does not work. It is clear that even when I know there are other people waiting for a game, I am still sitting watching the spinning roulette hexagon of searching. No lobby starts, no nothing. This improved with 2.1 but reverted in 2.2. I can be chatting with several players on discord who are all waiting for a game that doesn't start. When a game does start there are usually a few new people around. How many players just gave up while waiting? FD presumably have stats on how many people play but I suspect if the match maker can't even match people who want to play then their stats may not be be accurate.

Often, when a game ends, you find yourself in a broken lobby. It has enough players for another game but insists that it needs even more. Sometimes there are nine people in a lobby which is one more than the maximum per game of eight and yet it still tells you it needs more players. During this time, you'll see new players come in, wait and then leave. The experienced players know you need to all leave the lobby and then come back. Leaving even one player in there keeps the lobby in its broken state. There is no way to explain this to the new players whose first impression is that the game doesn't have enough players.

For 2.3, FD have balanced the distributor on the Imperial Imp and performed some network changes. Personally I think this balance will not be a positive for the game but even if it is, I think everyone would have preferred the time spent on the match maker and lobby instead.

The perception that CQC is dead is not true but that the match maker is dead is. There's the problem right there.

About the only thing that would make me want to even try CQC..... would be if it was playable whilst the main game was being patched! Ahem.

What do you mean by that? - I have never logged into CQC, but if I logged in for the first time and you, the experienced player, explained why I had to leave and return to the lobby as clearly as you just did, I would understand your explanation immediately.
I don't consider myself especially intelligent or insightful and would credit pretty much any other new player with being able to grasp the notion too, so I'm wondering what made you feel that way?!

It is not possible to send messages from the matchmaking lobby. And if the new players are not on the Discord, then that's that.

2 months , and i think the message is clear?!

Shame... that the only bad thing about CQC is bad matchmaking, bad advertising, and lack of arenas...

Lack of (good) game modes too.

DM, TDM, and CTF only? Powerups? That's a blast from the past.

Why not something more modern, like King of the Hill, or Payload (escort a cargo ship)?

While I still occasionally pop in for a round or two, and I genuinely think that for all its flaws it's still the best 6DoF multiplayer shooter out there (certainly out of the ones with VR support) the whole thing feels dated, like it was designed in the 90's. But without the high speed, high precision gameplay that games like Quake and UT were known for.

Currently I feel like I actually prefer MC for my quick fighter blasting fix.

Tried looking for a match for the first time in months...

At around 2:00, server time, 9PM, my time.

Crickets...

Yeah, it is a shame. If at least FDEV implemented a player custom made lobby so we can arrange our own unranked games and tourneys, that would go a long way to at least make it useful.

I like a lot of what 2.3 has brought but I wish FDev would spend a few updates on enhancing what we already have. I liken it to playing SimTower...best to fill the bottom floors with offices and restaurants before adding more floors on top.

It's essentially impossible to get a game right now, - either implement NPC AI as combatants, and/or merge it into the regular game and do the same.

Braben said in a reddit AMA that they're not going to improve on CQC unless player numbers pick up.

But if player numbers are down because of a lack a love...

I know, it is a really odd way to drum up activity for a feature that needs improvement to gain activity.

You will see they have the same attitude towards Multi-Crew.

Damned odd reasoning, if you ask me.

Been trying to get a game going (without joining and coordinating through Disqord) and it seems completely dead.
Why cant we search for "any" game, why divide the matchmaking between the gamemodes when its so few playing?

And why no bots? Even stupid bad bots would at least let us play.

Ive seen no news or comments on this, have FD abandoned CQC or anyone know if there is any plan for it later on?

I think so yeah. a damn shame....... CQC is so close to being a great little shooter to pass a few mins. just add in elite ai and a drop in drop out gameplay, and the option to start a game if lobby is not full - assuming all members agree - and i for one will play it.

i am not waiting around for >10 mins picking my nose waiting to get a game however.

sometimes you have to spread a little fertiliser and give them some water if you want your plants to grow :)

I hope they haven't given up on it. I have only played a couple of times, but it is something I want to get in to. Just not had the time yet.

if you want to play, ideally you want to try to organise an event with a group of people at an agreed time OR jump on when there is something organised by the devs.

if you dont, expect to wait a looooong time to get a game. i have managed to get into a team DM game a couple of times, but mostly only get in FFA and even that is after a dull wait.

never got into the other mode at all. simply not anyone playing.
