A Final Plea to Frontier for Longer Hairstyles

Yeah but its hologram? As you said in livestream the avatar is just our hologram in space ship. Not physical object that can be effected by zero g or gravity

What's a difference it makes? It future they won't be holograms but realistic avatars. It is a nitpicking. Technical reason is lound and clear. Hopefully in 3 - 4 year time floating long hair might be option in ED...I certainly believe FD will make it possible WHEN it will be actually feasible.

.. what you describe is "tact" :)

Hmm, just googled this 'tact' you speak of...interesting concept!

Hi everyone,

We really want to give you as many options as possible when creating characters. Unfortunately long hair is something we are unable to support from a technical standpoint.
Creating realistic looking long hair that behaves credibly both in normal gravity and in zero g, would take a lot of time and resources that we felt were better spent elsewhere.

It simply wouldn't have hit the quality bar that we want to achieve with everything we put in to Elite Dangerous.

From a lore perspective, a lot of spacers would have short hair to fit within their helmets, and to behave in zero g so they don't have their vision blocked.

That said we would like to add further styles in future releases that convey pinned-up hair, or long hair tied back.

Also - In the current build both genders have a pony tail, and there is a shoulder-length bob for females.

Thanks.

Firstly, congrats to the team for surpassing many expectations (mine included) with the Cmdr Creator & cam!

Secondly, the Dolphin looks like another dull Mega Bus (Does it have a pic of Dara O'Briain on the back too?) & the mega ships are basically stations with engines!..so err, 'not so impressed there!

...and there is a shoulder-length bob for females.

Thirdly, sexist!

Just to be clear. The Holo-Me is a representation hologram of what you're going to look like. It then applies it to your Commander, who is a real person sitting in the chair.

So it nutshell it is how our commander looks in real life? So we just don't have context about why we are able to change our appearance on the fly? (t.i. it is just a game)?

Also I am curious how it ties into future content. I understand dress up changes, or hairdos. But changing your appearance on the fly all the time feels not very ....persistent for you as character. How it impacts commander when it walks around?

I hope you will have good way to explain it :)

I would imagine handwavium - it's 1200 years in the future and fashion/cosmetic surgery technology has advanced so far that we can change our appearance at will.

After all, "You're worth it."

Thanks for that Drew that did make me laugh. I'm sure if I tried to guess the era that advert was from I'd be a decade off. Three cheers for wrinkles in Holo-Me.

We will be hanging around stations next going.
Is she or isn't she?

Thanks for the input Ed, hopefully this settles the matter then. Also, we should totally use your "HoloMe" from the livestream as a new bobblehead :p

Or give us a blank bobblehead that the Holo-Me projects an avatar face onto. For the narcissists, you could project your own face onto it. For everyone else, it could be the avatar you've made of someone close to you, someone in your wing or on your in-game friend's list.

If that's how it's gonna be when space legs come I would like to hear confirmation for that :) I personally think possibility to change everything radically is a bit too much but again, it is something of personal belief/disbelief than is it good or bad feature.

A minor but immersive suggestion:

As we leave the Bubble for exploration of the Galaxy, we leave with short hair.....

... but when we come back, our hair is grey and very long and our beards are way down our navel region. We also aged quite a lot.

Every canopy breach would leave another scar on our faces.

For every 5000 ly we travel, we get a dolphin tattoo on our bodies.

Also, pirates should have extra options to put burning incense on their hair tips and red shut eyes from all the fighting and Rum drinking.

Dunno about you, but I take a good supply of progenitor cells with me before setting off out into the great void. If they're good enough for the blue-haired disney space princess, they're good enough for me. :D

Heh, in a future where corporations control the galaxy, I'd expect a huge focus of it to be on human vanity... considering how big a business it is even in 2017. I can see it now:

- Commercial and Private Space Flight becomes a thing
- Faster than Light Travel Invented
- Ways to keep yourself looking good when partaking in space travel invented.

You know full well that as soon as space flight becomes common place, the very next thing that is asked is "how to I keep my hair looking perfect in zero-g?" and "how do I reverse the adverse effects of space travel on the human body so we don't all look awful?"

I would imagine the tech comes as standard when one takes out a membership with the Pilot's Federation, and all the non-space-faring poorer people don't have access to this tech. Which would explain the ugly mission givers at stations.

I don't have a real issue with it and I like to be immersed. There really is no reason why you can't create your character the way you want him/her and then leave it and only use the holome for different clothing.

Also if you get bored of the look, it means you don't have to wipe your save to change your appearance. Look how things are moving know with cosmetic surgery and gender changes, what will it be like in a thousand years time?

Probably a very simple procedure to change your facial shape and gender. Our medical suite in our ships could probably do that.

Thank god, a straight up answer about a feature that isn't boat-anchored and keelhauled by some fairy nonsense like Telepresence.

Speaking of which could you please revise that statement about multicrew to be more technical and redact any mentioning of Telepresence? It's done nothing but castrate any real conversation surrounding the topic.

It's honestly one feature with which I don't see harm in "limited availability", e.g., it only being available at high-tech stations ("outfitting/livery/commander"?). Permanent access to onboard genetic re-engineering face butchery feels weird :D

We really want to give you as many options as possible when creating characters. Unfortunately long hair is something we are unable to support from a technical standpoint.

An option would be to offer hairstyles that indicate that the hair is long, but without "flowing" hair - braids and updos or bun (right words?) could be a method to allow long hair without actually having to technically support long hair while players could still RP that their character has long hair.

Later, if we can walk around stations an option to wear the hair open could be added in "save" environments (normal gravity locations).

And please don't restrict hairstyles to one gender offer all hairstyles to male and female avatars.

Cheers Ed, thanks for confirming my sneaking suspicions about the technical aspects of long flowing locks! :D
BTW Ed Lewis Preset FTW!

Ed, its a lazy explanation. Simple hair model is too hard for a team of AAA programmers in XXI century?

Nobody want to implement zero-g uber physics for hair in avatar.
There a lot of possibilities to workaround it in reasonable way.
Go to your GF toilet and look what she is using to keep hairs in one piece... There a lot of ways in XXI century to keep hairs static.

And in zero-G they will be in one piece without blocking. Strong hair gel and you have it explained.

All you need to do and nothing more than people are expecting are static or almost long hair.

A way of deploying/retracting hairs is also easy. They may just pop up from collar and just hide over helmet. Nothing more simplies and it will be looks good enough to please everyone here.
Much better and realistic than cyber-transgender womans what FD have done now.

There are many TPP 'space games' and there are lot of long-haired womans, and noone except FDev had a problem with it.
Uber hairs are problematic, but not na normal static or almost static implementation of good looking hair.
