Don't be discouraged

I will buy it on release or on standard beta, don't care about walking around ship, if i want a fps i can play other games. I want this to be the best space sim :)

I don't think we'll see huge sales either, partly because it's a niche game (even more so, in this age of dumbed-down action titles that take no effort), and partly because a significant number of the fans already HAVE bought it. Still, it's got immense potential, and I sincerely hope that it sells more than well enough to let the team carry on expanding and improving it. And maybe enough extra to buy David Braben a Porsche or two - he's earned it :).

For example Dark souls is a niche game that sells well because is a niche game. :D

From one DS gamer to another, praise the sun, umbassa and all that. :)

But on niche game, Elite does have the ability to reinvigorate the space genre; the quality is certainly there. I've said before and would say again though, as well as the PC this game should really be ported to PS4 quite urgently if possible. Next-gen gamers don't (yet) have a catalogue of millions of games right now, they're all very hungry for content and curious about anything new appearing in online and retail stores - sales figures could be interesting.

I've longed to get out of my ship ever since reading The Dark Wheel, where Alex makes the dodgy turtle deal in the depth of a station.

The streets were crowded here and it took Alex only moments to realise that the South City of this particular Coriolis station was the 'down town' area. Illegal trade abounded, in narcotics, robots, slaves, sensuastims, prostitution and frozen organs. Spacers walked slowly, cautiously, most of them still wearing near-full suit, a certain sign that this was the rough quarter. Hookers, of all sexes (the Galaxy counted seventeen at this time) and races, but mostly humanoid, solicited from hovering platforms, ready to escape fast from any over-welcoming, unwelcome client. Advertising hoardings here were almost completely devoted to proclaiming the illicit pleasures which were available in South City. Police cars and remotes roared overhead, as did med-ships. The streets were alive with noise and bustle and filth.

Just getting out and looking at the docking bay, or wandering around empty corridors I don't want to see. So, I'm willing to wait for noise and bustle and filth.

Personally I don't care about the walking around expansion, it might be nice to wander around the stations and meet up with players, maybe, but I'm certainly not going to hold my breath.

Im also not too fussed about being able to walk round ships, spacestations or planets... exploring star systems and making money r my priorities.

But that said, i think its CRUCIAL for the existence of 'hubs' in the game. By that i mean places where players can congregate and socialise. And where better than a location within a spacestation in one of the core systems.

If ED is to have a social element then this is almost a requirement.

Not everyone wants to go to out of game forums to discuss the game, share stories of recent exploits or just show off their new stuff. ED needs a location where players can hang out in game and chat when they arent whizzing round an unexplored star system.

So much this. Stations should be such hubs in a game. Job offerings for bounty hunters and wingmen, some social banter...And what's important it would be nice to have it before walking around. Some station text comm maybe?

I found out about elite from research and knowledge of the rift. I looked at the kickstarter and on the website, dropped the 150 and have been getting even more excited by the day. I am new to the genre, I switched back to computers once this underwhelming generation of consoles came out. For me ED is the best of the space games under development. I feel that with the Rift and this current push towards VR that this game will do extremely well and continue to profit the entire community with new content and experiences.
Frontier has a huge task ahead of them and with their current efforts and enthusiasm I feel they will be able to accomplish their goals and present a game that, along with the rift and the current interest in VR and realism, will bring space sims into the mainstream light.

I've got a sneaky suspicion that E: D will actually sell better than expected.

For far too long gamers have been fed limited, flashy and ultimately boring fodder.

A lot of people are going to be surprised (and delighted) just how expansive, in-depth and ambitious a game can be.

Still remember how jaw-dropping the original and FFE were way back - aiming way over the heads of the competition at the time.

It doesn't have to be a single system either.

Broadcast to all stations (perhaps of the same faction type) to unite players no matter where they are would be my choice - just not during space flight : to me it's supposed to be cold, dark and lonely in space and lack of comms emphasises that ;)

I predict ED will not sell that well when it is first released.

This will be mainly because people will want to have the full package of free movement(your ship, planets, stations). I certainly won't be getting it for this very reason.

Just make sure you ship the free movement expansion soon.

Good luck with your wait. You might want to get yourself a good book (or two).

I guess its very simple for the devs to add a chat channel within spacestations, this will result in the core stations being far busier and more social.

However, i think the game will need an area where avatars r visible. A place your character is dressed up, or even your ship dressed up! lol

I personally think the perfect environment would be a lounge area with bar, cafe, shops, and even consoles for jobs.

It sounds like a great idea, but I would expect that a free chat system within the game would be open to abuse - Frontier would have to decide whether the benefits outweigh the requirement for review / moderation of users.

A Thargoid and Fer-de-Lance in every major station! Now there's a thought....

Undoubtedly it's going to be - there are a lot of juvenile people out there which is why you include a mute / report button.

One of the keys to success for this game, especially for longevity, is to build the community and keep them together. It took me a long time to ditch WoW - not due to the game becoming stale (which it did) but more the loss of people I knew in-game.

Why would someone make 61 posts about a game they aren't buying?

You're trolling to the converted mate, no point in your post at all :)

I find it fascinating that suddenly when FD seem to be on a roll with the delivery of new functionality and vast improvements on the net code that we get these doom laden threads started.

SC have proved there is a market of over 500K prepared to buy a space sim without seeing it. Also ED will have a sentimental market, there are a lot of middle aged people who played the original game for whom this will have a sentimental appeal and be something they would buy for children or grandchildren.

I am not predicting sales but I am anticipating being favourably surprised.

Just like every BBC-B owner bought Elite, the same will happen with oculus. There is immense interest in the OR, and it's best game is ED. By the time CV1 comes out there may be other great games for it too, but the space sim as a genre is perfectly suited to it.
