"Cosmetic items" should be part of the game

Hey Frontier,

I have been following the development of this game since 2014, when I bought into the original beta. Personally, I think the development of Elite: Dangerous is finally, with the arrival of the Commander Creator and the new cam, heading into a pretty interesting direction. However, there is one thing I am very concerned about: The store and it's microtransactions.
I would like, and I'm sure that I am not the only one, that there were at least some Skins, Shipkits etc. earnable ingame. Maybe as a reward for completing missions or engaging with engineers. I mean, Elite will be an RPG, can you imagine an RPG where you have to buy cloths or skins in a store, because they are considered "Cosmetic Items"?

Don't get me wrong: I know that there are servers that need to be maintained. But do you really need to put all the visual costumisations behind a massive paywall? Because I, as a student, consider 10€ as a massive price for a skin. I just want you guys to consider that you need visual feedback in a game like this. You need to see a difference between your A-rated cobra and a brand new ship. You need to see the shipname on the hull. Maybe charge for fancy fonts and colours. But it is time to step back and introduce earnable "cosmetics" into the game.
I have the fear that, once all the possible customisation options are brought to the store, Elite: Dangerous will be missing an important element of reward.

You know if you'd done the Christmas community goal, you would have got a free Chrome paint job for the Eagle? Frontier release some free content, however it is carefully limited so not taken for granted.

Cosmetic items are an additional way for FD to help fund the development of the game.

They are cheap and optional, and have zero impact on the game. But still, it is hard for the simple minded to understand.

Yet other games that cost 60€ give more customization options for free, even free to play games give more than elite. And yet elite+horizon price at launch was 120€. Compared to other AAA developers frontier is one of the worst what come to micro transactions, even Ubisoft, Activision and EA do better and give a lot of free visual customization options. And the quality of these cosmetics things you can buy in elite isn't good for their price. If you look at frontier financial report they do really well just from base game+horizon sales.

Frontier have done a lot of to damage Elite, first game the unfinished/empty game of season 1, then the season 2 release and cost of horizon (forcing players buy base game again as upgrade to horizon wasn't available for months just base game+horizon), and now when they finally are polishing their game they keep large part of any game, visual customization, behind pay wall. They do damage to their own imago with this. You can have micro transactions in full price game, but it can't be the only way for you to get to customize your stuff. Frontier should learn from Ubisoft, EA and some free to play games how to do micro transactions in way they don't hurt the game, because that way people are more willing to buy them.

It's hard to disagree with this really.

Realistically if you buy a game that has constant paintjob updates but for a fixed, one off fee, there's no financial incentive for the devs to continue to be creative on paints, or give them extra means to pay for server time, which is surely a significant overhead for ED long after you and I bought the game.

So it's either micro-transactions or server subscriptions imo .. and as bad as it may seem to have to buy a paintjob, a sub would be much worse, especially if you're short on cash. All you really need to do is be selective if the paints seem expensive to you, and choose wisely.

As and aside, as far as I'm concerned, 'whale' should NEVER be a derogatory term. For every person who buys every paint pack, there will be a student who can only afford a couple, so the whales pay the lion's share of server contributions. My perspective is that I don't have masses of free cash but I'll throw in, definitely, because I see it a bit like standing your round, in the pub. If you love ED, which I do, finding the price of a cup of coffee a couple of times a month, seems a small price for taking some financial worries off the devs so they can worry more about the code instead.

...
I think that's the point! I do like visual optimisations ingame, because I like RPGs and games like this. I also did like the original Elite ( a version on a nintendo console I think?) where you swapping modules/upgrading your ship actually made a difference. This should be the case with Elite: Dangerous. Sadly, all the fun of having a ship that is truly yours is reserved to people who are willing to spend lots of money on feigned "vanity items".

I understand that customisation is a desirable feature to have but at the end of the day it is truly optional, it is not a requirement or a 'right' as some like to believe.
At the end of the day, if you like the game enough to want to support the dev's for their work, go for it; otherwise there is just no need to get worked up about it.

For your patience...

EDIT: Yes it still works and I still play it :D

haha, when spacelegs eventually come, ED could compose of pc RPG combined with the current game. Whereby , a player gets experience, skills, levels, etc. which could translate to pip points. (current pip points subdivided by 10 or something). Player food, helps to "stamina" alertness, so bonus and/or scaled to pip points while piloting or co-crewing a ship. Assuming if ED continues to expand until it covers various simulation and rpg game aspects.

"Sundog: Frozen Legacy" had a spacelegs game aspect although just in 2D. Bars , shops and banks. Also mugging in the "streets".

A free paintjob for a ship no one uses after 10 hours? Gee thanks.

Before ship kits nobody moaned about needing them, but now they are here, you want them for free?

Same goes for ship name decal/plate thing , now its here "oh it should be for free"

So petty, especially when frontier and everyone knows the people who moan the most will buy them regardless

Ship name plates are being charged? Does that mean you have to pay FD to name your ship or does it mean you just paying for a name plate and you get a few designs to choose from?

FD need to be careful with their money grabbing. They continue down this path and people will start complaining about it then they'll be seen as a company only interested in cash which will put off even more people.

Maybe they really are trying to kill this game now.

I expect a lot of confusion comes from those of us that are gamers and have been gaming for years or decades over those that aren't really gamers and don't know what they're talking about. If you've been a gamer for years, you have past knowledge of games and what you got for your money meaning you can spot a scam when you see one.

Well said. I`d rep, but looks like I`ve already given you too much!

Agreed.

Paid for TWO FULL GAMES. The LEAST they can do is offer some cosmetic stuff for credits in the game. Especially cockpit decorum.

It was the first time they did something like this. I liked it. I am still with OP.

Didn't we all get Black Friday skins as well? I've got black skins for most ships and I sure didn't buy them. You're PP decals are free, Trade/Explore/Combat decals are free, so yeah, free stuff does crop up from time to time.

It was preorder bonus, not part of the game.

I got nothing against selling some cosmetics, but the store looks like a sleezy cash shop for some F2P mobile game. Solid color changes should be part of the base game, at least have some standards for the store....

There's been a healthy mix of cosmetic items given away for free and ones to be purchased in the stores since the game has been released. I don't think you should forget all of those, but you appear to have done in your post.

I don't think there's anything wrong with charging for cosmetic items, as long as they're only cosmetic.

I'm told I earned a chrome Eagle skin for participating in a CG some time ago. Maybe some day I'll have an Eagle to put it on.
