Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents: Tunnel Vision (25.02.3303 - 06.03.3303)

rebuy count: not as bad as i thought. there were 3 limps back to base with <10% hull

1 x iCourier = 427,578
2 x DBX = 1,095,764
1 x Anaconda = 12,546,619

grand total = 14,069,961. totally worth it!

and still an evening to go.......

@AkenB sorry i actually lol'd at your latest video. A similar thing happened to me on my very first scouting run. As i approached the habitation ring a Clipper came out of no where and almost took me out. Honestly some people just don't obey the speed restrictions!

There's no need to be sorry about it, the video is there for the exact purpose of laughing about it. :D
How many were the odds of finding someone at the right moment in that right spot while on a blind boosting strafe? Ok, the T7 is large, but the void of space was somewhat larger, last time I checked. I can rightly say that luck has not been with me for the best part of this race, and honestly I've found this a mostly amusing thing! [yesnod]

For anyone curious about how the T7 could fit in those tunnels (I'll spoil the answer for you: with nimble attitude and innate grace :p), here's the video of my final Joker run:

I only had one rebuy at 4.7 MCr when I came out of supercruise to close to the installation in San Tu. However, the mechanics at Evans port did profit quite a lot from me. I guess about 0.5 MCr, but I didn't keep track. The python obviously can take a bit of a beating, but it's easy to scratch the paint.

Final Joker Run submitted.

(Quality starts out poor, improves quickly. Ignore the leaderboard, it's out of date and I was too busy running repeatedly to fix it :p )

Here's hoping... *crosses fingers*

I'm going to try to take the Python out too, for funsies.

1D Hull Reinforcements have been the best thing in this race. Since I stocked the AspX and Python with them, all my rebuys have been deliberate at least. (another 2M credits today in 2 Asp rebuys)

Python run was 18:50 with an extra jump and a big crash at the end. I think with a joker it would be 14:05, but take off the extra jump and the crash and the potential for 13 minutes is there. Beating the 13 minute barrier with a Python would be incredible, and since it looks like 1st place will be in the 11 minute range, I don't think it's quite competitive. (although I would dearly love to see it!)

That's it, final (joker) run submitted. The ship dock locations weren't as good as yesterday, but after drawing an extremely beautiful map of the installation at LFT 1748 (which took 45 minutes :D) I finally managed to find a good tunnel at the first try and the rest of the run went pretty well :)

Video:

I've had 10 insurance claims with the (relatively inexpensive) Courier, 3.4 million cr in total.
Video of all the unsuccessfull attempts hopefully coming tomorrow :D

Thanks a lot for organizing and hosting Alec, this was a great idea and the balance played out pretty well too.
I think the bonus for bigger ships could maybe have been slightly higher, but it's always hard to find a penalty/bonus system that works without being more complicated than the rest of the rules together and especially before the race with limited amounts of data. So kudos on that; having a python and an Asp within seconds of DBS and Couriers in a race like this is great! :)
And thanks to everyone who participated, this forum thread was great as always and seeing everyone on course was nice aswell!
Looking forward to the final scoreboard update :D

Three rebuys tonight, although it turns out my rebuy price is only 1.6M, not the 4M I'd thought, so my total for the race is only 7.2M.

I did manage a (dreadful) run without dying (although I was down to 3% hull for the final outpost and the Fed Dock).

I had problems with my video recording for the run though, I'd stopped/started several times due to the rebuys and somewhere during that the Raptr recorder had stopped running. So I've no screen of buzzing the imperial dock (the next screen does show that I was down to 97% due to hitting the ring though).

The run's submitted as a 2-2-2, as those are the only screenshots I grabbed.

I'm glad to actually get a run in for a race finally though. :)

No rebuys for me, although I came close a couple of times when the inertia of the Asp got the better of me. Guess 0 rebuys = low score

Thanks to Alec Turner for hosting yet another excellent race, balanced so perfectly that even ships like the T7, Anaconda and Beluga were able to compete. Hard to believe when the course calls for small, fast and nimble ships.
I had loads of fun.

Congratulations to the eventual winners, whoever they may be. Probably the usual suspects ;)

I managed one more run but was hampered by bugs so didn't improve.

I had 4 rebuys at 1 million cr each.

Right then, the moment you've all been waiting for. The final scores ...

HtuKd0m.png

After a tough match which came down to a black ball finish between Black Widow and Sheila, a failed shot along the cushion left the corner pocket wide open for the killer blow from Sheila.

Oh wait ... the Tunnel Vision scores? Well we're just gonna have to wait a bit longer for those. I'll just give people a couple more hours to make sure all the submissions are in.

Since yesterday's scoreboard I've had joker runs from Cookiehole, Bruski, <-lightspeed-> and Stern Winter and non-joker runs from MrDragonRaaaar and Raiko. If you've sent me a submission since yesterday and aren't on that list (or have played a joker which I've missed) then let me know via forum pm ASAP!

In the meantime, I just watched cookiehole's run all the way through and I have to say, aside from the inconvenient placement of the federal ship dock at the end that looked pretty darn perfect to me - poetry in motion. Keep an eye on the fuel gauge during the run, terrific balancing of a small tank and hot scooping plus an excellent demonstration for Cmdr Codger of gravitational breaking and some deceleration loops of zero shame whatsoever.

Also noteworthy was the technique of switching to bookmarks during the SC from star to installation for route plotting the next stop, then re-targetting the installation from the nav panel. This leaves the route all set up and ready to roll so a quick tap of the "select next star in route" button is all that's required once the last tunnel has been completed.

Very nice!

Forget the minute head start from client switching, cookiehole deserves the win for the tunnel technique alone. He is much faster through the tunnels thanks to some good use of Flight Assist to flip quickly. Well played.

Little did I realise when I announced this race what a prophetic title "Tunnel Vision" would turn out to be. Oh My God! If I never have to look at a screenshot or video of another bloody installation tunnel ever again it'll be too soon for my liking! LOL.

Anyway ... that's a wrap folks! Tunnel Vision is over and (pending any errors) the final scores are ...

So, once more from the bottom ...

Cmdr Raiko finally manages to squeeze in a run. Flying his Asp Explorer named "The Nomad", he completes a conservative 2-2-2 run in 21m34s (there were more tunnels but alas the evidence got lost along the way together with some non-essential bits of The Nomad). With a bonus time of just over a minute his final time of 20:29 puts him in 19th place. Glad you made it in the end commander!

Next and MrDragonRaaaar also slips in a run on the final day, another Asp this one called "Old Faithful". Completing a 4-4-1 run in an excellent 18:42, the 2m15s bonus puts him into a highly commendable 12th place with a final time of 16:27.

Then come the jokers ...

First it's Stern Winter, shaving 2.5m off his previous time in a 4-4-4 run taking just 19m13s. With 96% hull remaining he qualifies for nearly 4 minutes of bonus time for a final time of 15:16 that places him 8th. Brilliant racing Mr Winter!

Three places above that Cmdr <-lightspeed-> shaves 40s off his previous time which, with maximum tunnels and a 75% hull joker gives him a final time of 13:51 that puts him in 5th place just 10 seconds behind Polly's Python.

And so we're into the top 3.

Cmdr furrycat, having possibly played the joker too soon sticks in 3rd place with his brilliant 13:30 run. Very well played sir. o7

Then a surprise reappearance from Cmdr Bruski. Having switched to the ever more popular Asp Explorer at the last minute, he pushes the shieldless "Sugar Glider" around a 12 tunnel course in a pretty astonishing 15:38. Playing the joker on the remaining 86% hull he gets a huge 3m52s bonus to land firmly in 2nd place (just 39s off the top spot) with a final time of 11:46. The 12 minute barrier? Shattered. Poly's dreams of getting a Python on the podium? Shattered.

And ... in first place ... with a staggering final time of just 11 minutes 7 seconds ... it's ... CMDR COOKIEHOLE!

rapturous applause

Saving his joker for the final hours and a near as dammit perfect 14m30s run in the Imperial Courier "Crater Creator", he completes maxium tunnels with 100% hull remaining, scaring the bejesus out of the 11 minute barrier and exceding our already high expectations in the process. Once again, the crowning salute goes to ... Cookiehole.

Enormous thanks to EVERYONE for taking part. You've all been brilliant and once again have made this thread the absolute best place to be on the forum.

Also thanks for all the kind words regarding this race. I'd like to take this opportunity to ask you all to keep supporting the Buckyball Races, whoever organises them. This is going to sound big headed but it's been said that I've set the bar rather high. Well whatever, please don't feel that you have to live up to any kind of standard in race organisation. I personally get a bit of a kick from going the extra mile with these but the main thing is to just have an ongoing calendar of races. If you've got an idea for one, no matter how simple, just go for it. Don't worry about the graphics, or complicated rules, or scoreboard commentary or any of that extra stuff. Announce the race and they will come. If you need help with anything then don't hesitate to ask (as long as it doesn't involve tunnels :p).

New races will no doubt be announced in the Buckyball group thread (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/193467-Buckyball-Racing-Club) so make sure you subscribe to keep up to date. As it happens, it looks like Buckyball founder Cmdr ElectricZ may be making a return from the wilderness to stage his own race entitled "Heavy Metal" ...

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...-Racing-Club?p=5242304&viewfull=1#post5242304

I'd also like to send out special thanks to Drakhyr for doing some early test piloting of the course for me. His findings helped me to refine the final time bonus formula (which I have to say worked out rather well looking at the spread of competitive ships on the leaderboard) and also convinced me to rule out the Ngalkin site (and you thought LFT 1748 was bad). I should also point out that a shipment of certain "rare" goods from Fullerene C60 is currently being transported to Drakhyr who will be distributing them at next month's Elite Meet in Bristol (UK, Earth).

Until next time ... last one to "Rebuy Prospect" is buying the drinks ... fly fast Buckyballers!

P.S. it's looking like destruction tally for this race is over 100 ships destroyed and over 100 million credits in insurance payouts. I fear the BRC may have lost its no claims bonus! I'll be writing this up in a post-race Galnet article ASAP.

Well done to all, and thanks Alec for organising a great race.

Next race is scheduled to start on 24th March. Please keep an eye on the website or our thread in the Dangerous Groups section, as that timing will change if it looks like 2.3 is going to drop that week. Otherwise Cmdr Alot's race will run 24 March to 2nd April; see the banner already on the website and you will know as much about it as I do :)

damn, if only i'd remembered about Hull Reinforcement Packages! (with AkenB doing the Lakon thing, this was my chance at a podium)

hohum. truly excellent race Alec. thank you very much. i made it 13 different ships on the leader board, which doesn't include the assorted 'try outs'; Orcas, Cutters, etc.. Really good to see so many people out on course over the past few days, always good to talk. Lots of new(ish) faces as well, i hope you've all been bitten by the Buckyball bug.

huge congrats to cookiehole on another epic display, looking forward to catching up with the Crater Creator video (now caught up. WOW! just WOW!), and to Python Polly for showing that big is beautiful - wow, one second off 3rd grrrr.

hope everyone had as much fun as i did. i'm off to check out our new home.

i imagine Alec's brain is like this at the moment
