Worried about 3.0 season/expansion

In today's pax streaming, for the first time, Sandy convinced me that space legs are not "end of the year" away (aka 3.0), but "not next season" away.

Since i'm pretty sure that atmospheric landings are "not next season" away too, i'm now quite worried about what 3.0 season/expansion will be about.

I'm beginning to think that was right who thought that 3.0 will be about aliens/targhoids, but i doubt that could bring enough content to fill a season/expansion, and that may lead to a "filler" season (not saying i wouldn't like alien content).
Thinking harder about it though, putting aliens behind a paywall could bring very iffy situations... so, i don't know, hope they won't do that (and i'm saying this as a lifetimer).

For the moment i just hope it won't last two years like Horizons will, because i'm really looking forward to walking around ships and stations, or landing on planets with athmosphere...

On a more pos note, that may be a verrry good thing. Time to enhance what already is for core gameplay and squash most bugs could be in que.

Yeah I really want space legs to be part of season 3. People argue it's a massive task, but I just want to walk on a planet, have a basic gun or exploration tool and I'm good. Add a basic framework for space legs at least.

The major feature Star Citizen has over Elite Dangerous is the freedom to walk around and be fully immersed in your character. I like ED's multicrew, but not being stuck in a chair. Multicrew makes me want to get out of my seat even more than before.

They should not delay space legs till 2018. I will play Star Citizen for the sole reason of having space legs if it doesn't come to ED in 2017.

Same, Frontier needs to realize that many people want SPACE LEGS sooner (season 3) rather than later. If we don't get it, we will go somewhere else for space legs.

Unfortunately they also need a payday, something to put behind a paywall, so enanching the core is "just" an ongoing process while selling something else.

Curious as to what he said tonight that finally managed to penetrate the carapace of your disbelief given the sheer number of times that we've already been told 'walking around is not in any way imminent'.

As for 'season 3' I remain convinced that the answer to what will be in it is essentially 'there won't be a 'season 3' in the same way that 2 was a season. I mean that was also hinted at quite strongly in previous dev comments and I for one don't actually have much difficulty in believing them. I think future updates after 2.4 are going to be made available via a more traditional 'one shot' DLC model where each one is a single aspect bolt-on which you either buy or don't buy.

As ever this is speculation and time will tell.

If they put space legs behind a pay wall as part of season 3, people will buy it for sure. People cannot resist space legs so the expansion will sell like hot cakes. Not only existing players, cause new gamers will jump in too.

As it stands (pun not intended), space legs would be pointless. Getting out of your ship would allow you to walk around planet surfaces - and then what? There's nothing you'd be able to do on foot that you can't already do in the SRV.

it's a whole different experience to walk in first person rather than being stuck in a chair. It also allows more interesting multiplayer situations where players meet in person, do exploration, mining together, roleplay or duel like a first person shooter. The first person shooter genre is much more popular than old school space sims where the player is the ship.

There still a tonne of stuff they can add to the game that doesn't includes legs. They might not be headline features. I'm sure they also want to sell the next DLC after 2.4.

I'm guessing spacing legs should be something like this,
walking around ships/dockside
Planets
FPS
EVA

Unfortunately I don't think an entire update should be dedicated to allowing players to walk next to eachother and/or shoot eachother. I just don't think it'd be a good decision to include an "FPS module" given Elite's playstyle and overall gameplay feel. It works in Star Citizen because it's a fundamentally different game - one that Elite Dangerous is not. Both have their drawbacks though.

I fear that's not even a question anymore...

That would be developer hell. I think it's more likely they will move to full fledged expansions (hence skipping a year)

The Horizons season isn't entirely about SRVs either. So space legs will have a lot of other stuff too.

Star Citizen was designed from the beginning so that players can seamlessly walk inside and out of their ships. In ED the game will be adapted to accommodate it. They could modify the SRV tech by replacing SRVs with animated player models and we'd have space legs on planets.

Sandy made it clear space legs are not coming any time soon. Unlikely they are even working on it now, except possibly for some concepts. I don't expect space legs in season 3, 4, and probably not 5. Its a back-burner thing they would like to consider eventually, but it is a major game-within-a-game change that is probably beyond their capabilities.

Sandy's statements were the clearest I've heard from FD on this, and it certainly dashed my hopes.

Delaying it for 2-3 seasons is at least 2-3 years. That's way too long for me. It takes 2-3 years to develop a Triple-A game like Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.

Frontier if you read this, I'm disappointed you put such a low priority on space legs and delay it for such a long time.

I agree. I have plenty of leg action to enjoy in other games far more detailed and oriented for that.

I am here for the best of what ED is. If only they could refine some of the best elements intimately connected with that core aspect.

OP is right.

I begin to suspect and fear that the season 3.0
will be nothing more than some kind of new airless landable planets to visit (volcanic planets, gasgiants atmosphere ..maybe?)

I do not know if it's just a feeling or what but
from the 2.0 on, I was a witness to an even less work commitment on the game.
If this trend continues the next expansion will have fewer features than what we have seen in 2.0.

in which case I will be very disappointed, despite the fact that surely there will be interesting things to see anyway.
